The Your Label team visited t-shirt brand Lazy Oaf to see how designer Gemma Shiel鈥檚 obsession with kitsch craziness translates into clothing designs. They learnt is that inspiration can come from practically anywhere, it鈥檚 what you do with it that鈥檚 important.
DIY Your Label
Your Creative Direction, Name and Logo are in place, next you鈥檒l need some inspiration for your collection:
Inspiration:
A good starting point is to think about what interests you, not just in fashion but anywhere. Try to avoid the obvious and avoid using other designers鈥 work as inspiration. The more original the inspiration, the more original the collection.
A Muse:
You might find it useful to choose a muse. A muse is the person who you think would be ideal to wear your clothes. Imagine them in your collection. They could be a celebrity, a historical figure, a sports star or a friend you think looks cool. Again, avoid the obvious!
Trends:
You might want to look at fashion trends to give you some ideas but remember, the best collections set the trends, they don鈥檛 follow them.
Silhouette:
This means the outline shape of the outfits without any detail so it could be something like 鈥渧olume on the upper body with broad shoulders and sleeves cinched at the waist with skinny legs鈥. Sketch the silhouette (or silhouettes) and use it on your鈥
Moodboard:
This is a visual representation of your ideas. It should be simple, clean and easy to understand. Collect images and fabric samples you find inspiring for colour, shape, detail or texture.
Lay everything out and start to edit the images. Reject anything that doesn鈥檛 exactly fit with your inspiration. When you鈥檙e sure all your images are right paste or pin them onto a board or if you have enough space stick them on the wall using blu tack.
Always keep your moodboard around when you鈥檙e designing as a visual reminder.
