The 1.Wo/Man team are getting ready for their show, the collection is nearly finished and they鈥檙e concentrating on how it鈥檚 going to look on the catwalk. They have to choose the right models to make the clothes look their best.
DIY Your Label:
Models are one of the first things to consider if you鈥檙e planning a catwalk show of your own, the right models make all the difference.
Venue:
Hold an open casting in a large space, with room for the models to practice their walk. Publicise your casting through your school/college and your friends.
Criteria:
If there are any restrictions on what you鈥檙e looking for (height, size etc.) be sure you make this clear so as not to waste anybody鈥檚 time.
Timing:
It takes roughly 5 minutes to see each model so allow plenty of time to see everyone. As you鈥檙e casting amateur models you can鈥檛 really expect them to change outfit more than twice during the show (they鈥檒l already be in their first outfit at the start) so for a 45 outfit collection you鈥檇 need 15 models, for 30 outfits 10 models etc. A model needs a gap of around 8 outfits between each turn on the catwalk to give them enough time to change.
Interviews:
Interview each potential model first to get an idea of their personality, it鈥檚 important that you find them easy to work with. Check their waist/dress/shoe sizes and find out whether they鈥檙e ok walking in heels (if that鈥檚 what you鈥檙e planning). Think about whether your hair and makeup will work on them. Take notes!
The Walk:
Next, watch them walk. Mark out a 鈥渃atwalk鈥 on the floor and have them walk to music, watch them stop and turn.
Some good tips for your potential models:
1. Walk to the music, keep your pace regular and relaxed.
2. Always walk in the centre of the catwalk
3. Stop and stand completely still for a count of two at the end of the catwalk this is where the photographers will get their best shot.
4. When you鈥檙e passing another model on the catwalk make sure you know which side you鈥檙e passing on. Tell your models to always pass on the same side!
5. It鈥檚 difficult to hold a smile for the whole length of the catwalk so a neutral expression is best (not grumpy though).
6. Focus on a point at the back wall of the room just above the heads of the audience.
The Decision:
Once you鈥檝e decided who you want in your show get everyone together and let them know your decision. It鈥檚 always hard to tell your potential models who鈥檚 out and who鈥檚 in, you鈥檒l have to disappoint some. Be straightforward and explain that if they weren鈥檛 chosen it鈥檚 not because they don鈥檛 look good, it鈥檚 because you鈥檙e trying to put together the group of models who work best for your collection.
