I chose to create album artwork for Ed Sheeran because his music is fantastic and I love the way his music is fresh and ‘rootsy’ at the same time. I wanted to convey his casual, down-to-earth style and attitude that came across in his interview. The photo I used appealed to me because it’s quite quirky and invited curiosity as to what emotion his mouth is portraying. I think that his eyes show depth and intensity but also a calmness. I used portraiture by focussing solely on his face and hands. By cropping out the majority of his body, it is easier to pick out important details such as his bracelets which strongly reflect Ed Sheeran’s colourful personality. The outline of Ed’s head and hands loosely resemble a tree and he described his sound as ‘rootsy’. This is why I made his name out of roots as a play on words. The image of the tree with roots also shows that he is strongly anchored in his music and is continually growing. The plain background gives the portraiture a crisp look and helps give out a fresh image. This contrasts with the messy style of the roots which shows Ed’s vibrancy as well as his organic nature.
