This jar is part of the V&A’s Ceramics collection. It originates from Korea and was made by the potter Kim Sok-hwan between 1970-1990. Its irregular profile recalls the ceramics of the Choson period (1392-1910) in Korea, when plain white vessels were produced in quantity. V&A curators bought it in 1991 in preparation for the opening of the Samsung Gallery of Korean Art the following year.
Kim Sok-hwan (Kim Suk Hwan), born 1932, has exhibited widely in her native country and internationally. In addition to white porcelain, she also produces brown-glazed stoneware.
