Title: The accident
by Rebekah from Warwickshire | in writing, fiction
Where am I? ' Where is my mum?
All I can see is black. It's all very, very dark. There's no light coming from anywhere. I wonder for a swift moment whether I'm dead or not but I realized I can't be because I can hear my mother howling and the steady beeping of the heart monitor.
I've tried many times to move, to at least turn over but I can't, my body is so numb. I can feel, hear and I'm not so sure if can taste but I can't move or see. It's as if some angry person has punched me a thousand times.
I wish my mum would stop crying. I can feel her shaking against me as she wails. Guilt hits me and I feel, if only, I could get up and hug her and say I'm so sorry for running out. I want to weep when she bawls at me.
'Darling ' Please wake ' wake up!' I can't mum.
My last painful memory of her floats guiltily into my head, piercing the inky blackness, it as me shouting at her. I got so angry and I stormed out, my temper had got the better of me. I would laugh if I could, the argument was so stupid. I can't even recall what it was about.
All I can remember was crying. I wasn't thinking straight. I remember a van. A blue van. I heard the tyres screech. I saw the driver's eyes widen. I felt an enormous amount of agony. Then there was nothing. I was just floating in complete darkness.
I hear the heart monitor's bleeps slow down and my mum's crying fizz out, like turning down a radio, really slowly.
Quite suddenly a bright blinding light appeared. It was a though I was looking through a telescope the wrong way. A sweet smell came to me. A dark figure slid into view in front of me, slightly above me. The smell seemed to radiate from them. It a faintly chilling moment I realized who it was. Nan! It's my Nan's perfume. The image shuddered. No, I thought, I want my Nan!
Another shudder. My eyes snapped open but I wasn't in my body. I looked around. There was no sound. Like watching a TV with the sound turned off. I could see my mum being dragged out, screaming and struggling. I looked at why, the heart monitor only showed an occasional blip. I'm dead, I thought. I saw a doctor jolting me with a defibrillator. I watched him do it twice and on the third time I spontaneously jerked back into my body.
I was fighting now. I wasn't going to give up now. With every morsel of will power I had left I willed my heart to beat again. Then, all of a sudden, my eyes were open and I was myself. To prove it, I move an arm. I was so relived. My mum came charging back in, rushed to me and started cuddling me so tightly, I felt a contented pain.
'I'm so sorry mum!' I sobbed, so incredibly thankful for being alive.
