Title: The Angels

by Sophie from Dorset | in writing, poetry

We wanted to fly
To be free
But the truth was that we couldn't
We were rocks at the bottom of the sea
And there was hope in the sky

We tried to grow wings
But nature refused us
Refused you
And our metal wings were consumed by rust
Back at square one with a disease of hate

We sat on the seabed
You sank into the sand
And I needed to stop you
I wanted to hold your hand
But you only slipped between my fingers

I lost you
My only friend in the entire ocean
And life left me alone
A pathetic, useless notion
As if it didn't want a thing to do with me

And, suddenly, you emerged
From the grave I'd dug in your memory
We rejoiced, hugged each other
You said you had to forget the sky ' them ' or me
You chose the sky, the hope

And, for once, I slept with a smile
