Title: Sonnet for a younger sister
by Carolyn | in writing, poetry
In a field of roses you are a weed;
Your leaves delicate; they seem to quiver
I watched your growth beginning from a seed,
And I know the wonders you deliver
Though not a beauty you'll forever keep;
Your glowing smile and youthful, daring streak,
The proof that beauty is merely skin-deep,
Character is not defined by physique.
In rain and sleet the roses sigh and mourn,
Oppressed and weak from the relentless gale
The weed remained preserved, not weatherworn
Its inner strength allowed it to prevail.
Though over time you'll grow and go your way
Forever deep in my heart you will stay
My younger sister is small for her age--however her personality is quite the opposite of her physique. She is fearless of trying new things and knows how to stand up for herself in difficult situations. One day, while watching her practice being ""Rose"" for her first school play, I was suddenly inspired to write a poem celebrating her strength and resilience.
