Title: Powerful elements
by Nathan C from Northern Ireland | in writing, poetry
It gurgles and bubbles,
Softly soothing,
Using its' therapeutic characteristics,
It heals the wounded and quenches our thirst,
It is calm and relaxed,
But with a sudden burst of fury,
It can strike disaster,
Washing away our homes,
Destroying everything we own,
Before returning to the oceans and rivers as before.
It crackles and pops,
Creating a peaceful atmosphere,
Heating our homes,
Warming our toes,
If you touch it, it will punish,
It flickers like a warning,
Telling us not to go near,
It is something that we struggle to control,
Licking the air with a ferocious glow,
It can not be tamed,
After all it spreads like wildfire.
It howls and cries in the winter's sky,
Sending shivers down our spines,
Chasing leaves round and round,
Before throwing them to the ground,
It whips and whistles,
Telling of its loneliness,
It attacks with ferocious speed and force,
Lifting our homes and belongings into the air,
Before they come crashing back down to earth.
Centrally heated right at the core,
It crumbles and breaks, shatters and shakes,
It is rugged and rough, yet soft and smooth,
Multi-coloured and multi-functional,
It stirs our senses - smell, touch and sight,
It helps grow are crops and feed are livestock,
We tread all over this wondrous thing,
Sometimes it wants revenge,
It shakes and shivers,
Making us panic and hide under tables,
Then tears down buildings,
Before returning to a sleeping stand still.
