Title: Wonderful world

by Naomi A from Northern Ireland | in writing, poetry

Soft dust flying up beneath my feet,
Sun scorched and time worn.
It lies flat all around me,
In the distance its mountainous shapes,
Break the horizon.
Strong but it can crumble
At the lightest touch.
Flowers carpet it with colour,
Disguising the plain colour of the earth.

You can chase forever and never catch it,
Slipping gently through my fingers.
Light and refreshing now,
But it can be harsh and cruel,
Ripping up trees and tearing down houses.
It soars like an eagle,
Then comes crashing down to dance among the leaves,
Twirling like a ballerina.
Never-ending, invisible,
Whistling wind.

Icy, pure and clear,
Flowing through valleys endlessly,
Rushing downhill taking rocks within its force.
The glittering flow cascades over deadly cliffs,
Tumbling into the frothy depths below,
Coming out as ever on the other side.
Cutting down anything in its path,
To reach the destination,
And join the welcoming waves of the sea.

Dazzling red and gold,
Glowing like the sun.
Crackling merrily consuming all that enters it,
Building up, roaring like a lion.
Hot sparks fly from it as tiny glowing stars,
Smoke billows from its midst,
Covering like a blanket of cloud.
Now only black ashes remain,
All that's left of the fiery furnace that blazed moments ago.
