Title: Matricide
by Chantal from Kent | in writing, poetry
Shots and gouges and slashes and blows-
Cracked skin,
Blistered and bleeding.
Tears fall from the sky
To smoky land,
Dusty and empty-
All those stolen promises,
Their memories whispered on a lonely wind;
Her voice,
Cleaved with pain,
A broken body
Lying there without a breath,
Raped,
Beaten,
Mutilated beyond living design.
'My children are gone',
Are her words,
'Tusks I gave to the mighty elephants
But now only the weakest of them live.
Rhinos walk shorn,
One final desperate act meant to save them.
Lions turn on their own,
Wreaking cub-slaughter,
Driven into darkness by bullets
That claim only the strongest'.
Her voice gives a rattle,
But she clings on.
'How did my cradle crumble
Into blood
Like this?
Curse the demons who shunned their kin,
Who turned green land to desert,
Who stripped me bare
And took all that I was''
The song comes to an end;
Sorrow overcomes her.
The death pangs of dying Mother Africa.
Inspired by a book called ""Blood Sisters"", set during the 1950s-60s in East Africa, at a time of great political upheaval. Humans were not alone in their suffering at that time, and the war is still going on even now.
