Title: Start at the beginning

by Katrina from Kent | in writing, poetry

Start at the beginning,
And finish at the end.
As my teacher told me
On that sunny afternoon.

But I started at the end,
And finished at the beginning.
And the teacher said 'I warned you'
But it was far too late.

I died in 1994 (hit by a car)
Before I had been born.
In 1995 I had
My 21th birthday.

Scientists had found a way
To stop Global Warming.
And the worries were all over,
Before they had begun.

Luckily, my teacher,
Reversed my silly spell,
By writing out the alphabet,
As A B C.

Now I always start at the beginning,
And not at the end,
Because then you know what's coming
Before it has come.

And what is the point of living,
If you know what is coming,
Because it has come
Because you've had the end.

Because peeking at the end
Is cheating.
Because you know your end,
And there's nothing left to wonder.

So start at the beginning
And let the ending come.
Just wait it out because you know,
It hasn't yet begun.

Well, everyone knows that quote from 'The Sound of Music' - ""Let's start at the very beginning; the very best place to start,"" And I just wondered what would happen if you didn't - start at the beginning, I mean. And so this poem was born.
