Title: Never meant to be

She stared up at him, those rose-tinted glasses that she wore for so long nothing more than a memory now.
'Why did you do it?'
The rain fell, fast and hard. On such hot night such as this it should have been soothing, but it just made her uncomfortable. She shifted from one foot to the other and folded her arms in front of her chest, trying to make it seem as if she wasn't bothered about the whole disastrous situation.
'Well?'
He stared back at her, still loving her, still admiring her, still adoring her, but knowing that he couldn't come back from this. They were finished.
'It seemed like the right thing to do at the time,' he replied.
She pouted in that annoying, cute way. He longed to sweep the wet hair away from her face, whisk her off to the dry shelter of the bus stop and fold her into his arms, whispering all the things he should have whispered a long time ago.
'I'm sorry,' he said finally. 'I'm so...sorry...'
Her nose and eyes began to sting. She could feel a huge, body-racking sob rising in her chest. Her lower lip unceremoniously began to tremble. She turned away abruptly. No, he would not see her cry. She wouldn't give him that.
'Sorry is far from good enough,' she spat over her shoulder.
'Well, I don't know what else to say then.'
She half turned to him. His head was hung, yet he still stared at her in that enchanting way of his, the way he had since the first day they met. Even now, so far along down the line, she was still a glorious mystery to him, the greatest most wonderful mystery of all.
She sniffed. 'Then I guess we have nothing more to say to one another, except goodbye.'
He nodded, turned his back to her and began to walk. She twisted her head back around and began the walk home.
Then, unknown to the other, they whispered in unison, 'and I love you.'
My friend was telling me about all the failed relationships that she had, even though she had thrown her heart and soul into them. Then this story just came into my head.
