Title: Wish and wish.

by Vicky from Hampshire and Isle of Wight | in writing, poetry

I wish and wish right through the day,
To make this nightmare go away
Memories become a blur,
My smile I forgot.

Around me all I see is pain,
Friends of mine no longer sane
Friends of mine who are now dead,
That'll soon be me.

Machine guns fire without care,
Of what life is standing there
Gas floats near ' suffocates,
Anyone in its way.

I wish and wish for that day,
When this nightmare goes away
When my memories return to me,
And my soul is free.

My inspiration for this poem was the 1st world war. I imagined that I was sitting alone in a trench as I could hear gun shots, bombs and screaming. It's hard to understand how the real soldiers felt as they were fighting for life in a muddy trench as we have never been through anything that bad...but this poem was me trying to imagine how it would feel to be at war as best as I could. The poem is like a wish letter...wishing for the war to be over...wishing to run away from the nightmare of battle.
