Title: Baby Poem
by Louisa from Cheshire | in writing, poetry
Conceived in a stroke of inspiration
Oblivious to the chemical reaction
Striking a match in my subconscious
Twinkle in my mind
Chain reaction
Chain of thought
Smouldering
I carried you around in my head
Light as air
Unknowing
A little bundle of thoughts
You began to grow
Each cell
Idea
Duplicating
Slowly inside
Knitting yourself over time
Growing heavier
Unbidden my thoughts return to you
Eyes glazed, soft smile
Swelling like a ripe fruit
Foetal fish
Experimentally extending a feeler
Putting out lines
Moving far inside
Head aching
Made dizzy by your weight
Pressing other things to the back of my mind
Feeding you on Mozart and idioms
Feeling you grow strong
Evolving in the furtive darkness
Kicking
Demanding to be free
Let out of your prison
To see and be seen
Hours struggling
Straining to express you
In your entirety
Excavating you inside out
Till at last
Fists clenched, cramped and aching
Clutching the metal blade
To cut the ties
Final strokes and we become two
Product, creator
Artist, masterpiece
You lie squalling on this white sheet
Glistening with the ink of your creation
I hold you
Gently, gently
In my hands
I look past your blotchy crumpled face
And read my reflection in some inner place
I wrote this when I was 16, thinking about how it all begins...
