Title: Camera reveals all...

by Vicky from Derbyshire | in writing, fiction

'Hey, you still recording?'

The teen smiled and turned her gaze outside.

'It's beautiful here, just the escape we needed.'

The focus changed and turned outside the car's window. There was a vast countryside extending further than the image could capture. Close to it, lay a silent pound, shimmering from under the sun's white glow.

The focus turned again, back onto the teen who had wound down the window to take a gasp of fresh air.

'Smell that boys, the great outdoors!'

Somebody behind the camera chuckled.

Pzzzt.

'Can you believe it, the girl gets us to work!'

There were trees, hundreds of them, standing in front of the plain, white sky. When the camera shifted, the raven haired one was revealed, huffing as he searched the floor.

He looked up and behind the camera. 'Drop the camera, we have to get searching!'

Pzzzt.

'Pass me some fire wood over here!'

A different scene, outside this time. The image revealed a small camp, settled on a scatters of wet soil and leaves. To the centre, the main focus of the camera, there was a small collection of fire wood.

The same teen looked up, smiling to the person behind the camera.

'Well? Are you going to help me?'

Another person suddenly erupted onto the screen, panting and holding wooden sticks in his hands. The teen laughed as the raven haired one stumbled.

'I asked for fire wood, not twigs!'

Pzzzt.

'It's getting dark''

'Yeah, you're not kidding...'

Inside the green tent, the only light came from a torch the raven haired one carried. Shadows played across the screen of the tent, three of them together.

Curiously, the teen leaned over and attempted to take the camera. 'Pass it over a sec'' The image became blurred in motion, but voices still remained. 'Oh alright then, I'll leave you with your precious camera then.' The image became clear again and the teen laughed, her eyes gleaming to the shadow behind. 'You know I think a game of truth and dare is in order my friends''

Somewhere, out of the camera's stare, the dark haired one cooed with interest.

Pzzzt.

The teen again, laying on the rolls of sleepingbags in a casual fashion. It was darker and before, no light, just night vision now.

Her features were tense, serious, with a odd pinch of her lips by her teeth. 'Well, it's just us now'Truth or dare?'

Silence.

The teen smiled. 'Alright. I'll pick.' Her eyes rolled up. 'I pick'truth.' Silence and then she smiled again. 'Don't you smile at me! I have a very important question'' With a shrug of the blanket, the teen moved closer'and closer' until her prowling body eclipsed the vision.

The camera dropped.

Pzzzt.

'If you're watching this, then I'm already dead right now''

The teen, panting, with tears rolling down her eyes. The camera was looking up, smudged by dirt.

'M-mum, D-dad, I love you. I'm sorry I didn't listen to you and came here instead. I-I'm so, so, sorry--' She sobbed and the camera shook. 'What I've done, everything, I didn't mean it!--' She looked behind the camera and screamed.

The camera dropped.

Pzzzt.

'W-where are you?'

There are twigs and leaves in the way, but there is the dark haired one standing, searching.

The sky is white.

The dark haired one bends over and finds a river. Over it he washes his hands, confused, still turning his head and searching.

There are footsteps and the image jumps--

A cry.

Splash.

The dark haired one falls into the water, past the camera's stare.

Pzzzt.

In the car again. Blood stains his hands.

Smell the great outdoors.

I had to base one of my coursework pieces on horror where the murders weren't involved clearly. When handing the piece in I felt inspired to then write this, showing insight to the people who were killed.
