Title: Slowly but surely

by Nikki | in writing, poetry

Too young to know the truth,
But wise enough to see the lies.
What happened here? Don't you want to know?
Take it all in.
Have a cigarette, a pint of beer.
Slowly but surely.

The haze of smoke obscures the bar,
It's thick enough to taste,
That sweet aroma of something unfamiliar,
What curiosity failed him, and made his eyes so weak?

Unhealthily worn skin,
Even though his year was young.
What had ripped the smile from his face,
Replaced it with a frown?

Watch the mourners cry for him,
As the rain pelts their chalky faces.
They don't look surprised,
Although he was hardly a man.
The church bell tortures the empty silence,
But what curiosity killed him?

Return to that smoky bar,
The sweet-smelling fog left long ago,
With the money that glittered madly in his eyes.
What did he need it for?
Slowly but surely.

Generally, I write poems and turn them into songs. I was told to write a song in the style of Jeff Buckley, so I sat down and started to write a poem based on the message: don't take drugs. It is about a man who dies from taking drugs, and I thought this Would be a good subject because Jeff Buckley used powerful messages in his songs to get his views across to his fans.
