Title: The Monster

by Anna from Scotland | in writing, poetry

Crashing, roaring, moaning.
Rending, tearing, fighting.
Rocks crumble, houses tumble...
The monster is hungry.

Whipped up into a fury,
Boiling with uncontollable rage,
The monster attacks blindly,
Destroying everything in its path.

Ships are torn to pieces,
All around, people are being killed.
The monster hides its secret well,
Looks, open, friendly and inviting.
How could it hurt anyone?

The sea watches quietly,
Whispering amongst itself,
Lapping gently, chuckling softly.

At its edge our children paddle.
Happy, contented, shrieking delightedly,
As they dance about in the monster's jaws.
Certain that they will come to no harm.

I was sitting in a cafe watching the sea one day when I was on holiday and I thought that it looked lovely. So calm and inviting. I then thought about the other side of the sea. The side that people don't think about as they swim out as far as possible and believe they are safe, so I wrote a poem about it, designed to show the two sides of the sea and to point out that despite looking safe, the sea is not really safe at all and you should not be lulled into a false sense of security.
