What was the competition?

Working in partnership with and The Sarah Jane Adventures team, our competition asked you to make some sound effects and/or design a spaceship for the Krulius, an alien on .

The prize:

The winners attended a two day master class with leading industry professionals involved in games design. They worked alongside , and games executives to produce an online game for The Sarah Jane Adventures website.

What you had to do for the competition:

There were two categories and the entries had to reflect and be suitable for The Sarah Jane Adventures

Sound category

The task was to record for the Krulius:-

  • When he moves
  • When he breathes out his toxic breath
  • When he uses the digital bio-converter and modem on his wrist

Each sound needed to be up to 10 seconds long so that the whole entry was no longer than 30 seconds. We asked you to make each sound with what's around you. You could make them using a computer but all the sounds made had to be original. Premade loops or samples weren't allowed.

Visual category

The task was to for the Krulius including a special feature which would be useful to him. Take a look at .

We gave you complete freedom in what you did and in the materials you used. You could draw it, paint it, create a collage for your design and digitally manipulate it. It was up to you.

The description

To accompany your entry, we asked you to write a description of no more than 200 words to tell us the creative thought behind your entry and how the sounds were made or why the special feature on the spaceship would be useful to the Krulius. The following needed to be thought about when writing the description:-

  • how you came up with the ideas
  • how you made the sound or decided on the special feature for the spaceship
  • why your entry was right for the Krulius
  • what made you think it suited the audience.

The entries were judged on:

  • Originality in the creation of your entry
  • Suitability for The Sarah Jane Adventures game
  • Creative thought process in the description
  • How well the sounds and designs reflect the character of the Krulius

All entries were shortlisted by a panel of moderators from 大象传媒 Blast and The Sarah Jane Adventures before going forward to the final judging panel.

Blast Game Design Competition Terms and Conditions

  1. The 大象传媒's code of conduct for competitions applies to this competition. You can read more about it here: .
  2. Entry is open to all UK residents (including Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) who are aged between 13 and 19 at the closing date, except 大象传媒 employees or those of its affiliates and their close relatives or any person connected to the competition. Proof of age, identity and eligibility may be requested.
  3. If the entrant is under 18, their parent or guardian must consent to their entry and confirm the entrant's compliance with these terms and conditions. Proof of consent may be requested.
  4. Entrants can enter in one of the following two categories: (A) SOUND DESIGN - To enter this category entrants must submit an audio file or CD (of a maximum of 30 seconds in length) containing sound effects for:
    • the Krulius' toxic breath
    • the Krulius' digital bio-converter and modem on his wrist
    • the Krulius' movement
    This must be accompanied by a written explanation of the three sound effects (maximum of 200 words). (B) VISUAL DESIGN - To enter in this category entrants must submit an image using the design template (which can be found on the following website: www.bbc.co.uk/blast/gamecompetition) including images of:
    • the Krulius' new spaceship;
    • a close-up of a special feature of the spaceship.
    This must be accompanied by a written explanation of the spaceship design (maximum of 200 words).
  5. All entries must be accompanied by the following information: the entrant's name, age, contact details, address and, where the entrant is under 18, confirmation of the relevant parent or guardian's consent.
  6. The 大象传媒 will only ever use personal details for the purposes of administering this competition. Please see the 大象传媒's Privacy Policy: .
  7. The competition opens on Monday 16th August. Entries received before this date will not be considered.
  8. Entries must be submitted either: (A) via THE UPLOADER on the Blast website . Entries uploaded must have the tag 鈥済ame_design_sound鈥 or game_design_visual鈥 depending on which category the entry relates to. The maximum file size that the uploader can accept is 50mb for audio, 20mb for images.
    • The uploader can accept the following file types: Audio: *.mp3;*.wav; Images: *.jpg;*.jpeg;*.png;*.tiff

  9. Closing time for entries is 17:00 on Monday 11 October 2010. Submissions received after this time will not be considered, so please do not wait until the last minute to upload your entry. Entries will not be returned so please remember to keep a copy. Unsuccessful entrants will not be contacted and no feedback on any entry will be provided.
  10. Entrants can only enter individually and group entries are not permitted. Entrants can enter in both categories and can submit multiple entries in each category. If you submit more than one entry in either category, only the entry judged to be the best in that category will be included in the shortlist.
  11. All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The 大象传媒 accepts no liability if entrants ignore these rules and entrant, or the entrant's parent or guardian, agrees to fully indemnify the 大象传媒 against any claims by any third party arising from any breach of these rules.
  12. Branded products and logos should not feature in the entry. The entry must not give undue prominence to trade marked products, including toys and recognisable film characters.
  13. Entries must not contain defamatory, obscene, offensive or any other unsuitable material. Entries must be suitable to be broadcast by the 大象传媒 to audiences of all ages.
  14. Entrants retain the copyright in their entries but grant to the 大象传媒 a non-exclusive licence to broadcast their entry across all media, as well as use it on any online platforms.
  15. Entrants permit the 大象传媒 to edit or change entries in any way it may in its sole discretion consider necessary for the purposes of use in the competition and the uses set out in clause 14 above.
  16. By entering the competition, entrants, or their parent or guardian, warrant that they have legal capacity to enter the competition and agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.
  17. A selection of entries may be broadcast on television and used on-line throughout the competition. A selection of entrants may also be interviewed by the 大象传媒 and these interviews may also be broadcast on TV and used on-line. This will not be a part of, or have any influence on, the judging process.
  18. Entries will be judged on the following criteria:
    • Demonstrates originality in the creation of the entry
    • Suitability for a Sarah Jane Adventures Game
    • Creative thought process in the explanation
    • How well the designs reflect the character of the Krulius
  19. Entries will be judged through the following process:
    • Stage One - All entries will be reviewed by members of the 大象传媒 Blast productions team who will select up to 50 entries in each category for the shortlist, based on the criteria outlined above.
    • Stage Two - A panel of Judges will review the shortlisted entries and will select up to 4 entries in each category as the winners, based on the criteria outlined above.
  20. The winners will be contacted by phone or email by a member of the 大象传媒 production team no later than Friday 22 October 2010. If the winner cannot be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made to do so, the 大象传媒 reserves the right to offer the prize to the next best entry.
  21. The prize consists of a two day masterclass with leading industry games design professionals that will take place on the 30th & 31st October 2010 in the UK. Dates may be subject to change. The 大象传媒 will provide reasonable travel and accommodation if required to winners and for one chaperone where winners are under 16. The prize is not transferable and must be taken as stated and there is no cash alternative.
  22. Winners under 16 must be accompanied to and from the masterclasses by one chaperone aged over 18.
  23. The names of each entrant whose entry is broadcast or used on-line will be made public. Entrants must agree to take part in any post-competition publicity if required.
  24. The 大象传媒's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  25. The 大象传媒 reserves the right to disqualify any entry which breaches any of these Terms and Conditions or to withhold or withdraw a prize if in its opinion entries do not reach the required standard.
  26. The 大象传媒 reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions or cancel this competition at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside its control. In this event, a notice will be posted on the 大象传媒 Blast website.
  27. The 大象传媒, its sub-contractors, subsidiaries and/or agencies cannot accept any responsibility whatsoever for any technical failure or malfunction or any other problem with any server, Internet access, system, the post or otherwise which may result in any entry being lost or not properly registered or recorded. Proof of sending is not proof of receipt.
  28. These Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
