Jackass for beginners

This week sees the launch of another user generated video content website aimed at a youthful audience. But this one looks like it could be quite a bit more than just another wannabe.

As you might expect, offers short videos of kids doing crazee things. So far, so ordinary. What sets this site apart from others is that these videos are based on meeting challenges. You can either set a challenge for someone else to meet, or take one up yourself. These can range from the silly to the absurd, and the result is a something like a cross between ‘Jackass’ and ‘You’ve been framed’. There aren’t too many videos on the website at the moment, but you can watch a woman trying to sell donuts outside a police station to raise money against police brutality, and a guy taking a shower in the middle of the street. There’s a monthly competition as well, with entries being rated by the users. The most popular ones, as rated by the users, get a cash prize.

When it comes to user generated content sites I always seem to have to sift through an awful lot of chaff to find wheat. By setting challenges, and therefore encouraging users to think a bit more about what they are making, Dare Junkies has a real chance of having more videos that are watchable as a result.

The downside, predictably enough, is the accessibility of the website. It is possible to navigate around the website with a screen reader. But if you are using a keyboard to navigate, then the tabbing order seems to be a bit random. To get involved, whether that be to upload a video or rate one, you have to register. Sadly, the six-page registration form is a minefield of JavaScript, text boxes without proper labels and a CAPTCHA, which is an image of text used to deter spam. This undoubtedly makes the registration process inaccessible to a number of user groups. So these users won’t be able to rate videos, upload video, enter the cash prize competition, set challenges or interact with other users.

The website is still in beta testing though. So if this is the kind of website that you think you might like and want to get involved with, then we would suggest that you email Dare Junkies with any specific problems you encounter.
