Stephen Rea and the return of Field Day
Stephen Rea is in town. Narrating Flann O'Brien's "The Third Policeman"Ìýwith original music by Colin Reid and assembled strings. I haven't seen Stephen inÌýseveral years.ÌýThe last time was in his house outside Dublin, doing a television interview with him for ´óÏó´«Ã½ NI's now defunct "Festival Nights". I remember he said my top, part of which was crocheted, looked like one of those lace doilies you get on the back of sofas. Thanks fella. He's had a busy year. Two werewolf films, one of which with Kate Beckinsale; a movie with Martin Sheen "Stella Days" and the stunning ´óÏó´«Ã½ television drama "The Shadow Line". I mixÌýup the name of hisÌýcharacter. He played a sinister hit man called Gatehouse. "I loved you asÌýPostgate," I blurt out. He brushes it off, andÌýenthuses about HugoÌýBlick, the writer.ÌýÌýHe would love to re-visit this character. Well, he was the only one who survived the whole series. I think he deserves his own spin off series!ÌýBut I'm most interested in his ambition to get a new Field Day Theatre CompanyÌýplay into production forÌýpart of the UK City of Culture 2013. It was written into the proposal and seems to be Stephen driving it.ÌýWhile Field Day never went away, Seamus Deane keeping the literature arm going, there is a strong sense of the end of the old guard (Friel, Kilroy etc) and an ushering in of the new. Who does he want to write for him? He won't say.ÌýHe's talking to people, and wants to get the right play. He's painfully elusive, not wanting to jinx anything, but it is going to be new writing. But adds I will be the first to know as soon as he's decided.
