Gordon sent in this report from Lerwick in the Shetlands, just before he heads out into the North Atlantic. You can follow his adventures right here...

Two summers ago I spent three weeks on Shetland searching for killer whales. I had an amazing time, saw lots of wildlife, but alas no killer whales.

A fisherman I spoke to back then in 2007, told me I'd come at the wrong time. Come back in the autumn, he said, and head out into the north sea on my boat.

Well, a couple of autumns have come and gone since then, but for Autumnwatch 2009 I'm back. Lots of hiccups and delays but the trawler is due to set sail on Sunday night, and I'll be on it.

I'm so excited about the trip, but apprehensive too. Seasonal storms, the risk of sea sickness, the perils of the open ocean all make for one big adventure. Second time lucky? I really hope so. You'll be the first to know if I get lucky. Or should I say, WHEN I'm lucky!
