If you missed Monday's Songlines then try to take time to listen again online. This week John Cavanagh uncovered the fascinating story behind Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.

One of the interesting facts revealed was that Cohen has written many, many extra verses over the years and he drops them and adds them in as he sees fit.

This came to light yesterday when Hallelujah was suggested as one of our 'iconic opening lines' songs. Unfortunately the version we had was a live one where Laughing Lennie decided to drop the opening verse of the song with the line about David finding the secret chord that pleased the lord. Oh well...

I am hoping that last week's Songlines on 500 Miles gets repeated soon. It was a cracker and the diversity of contributors to the programme showed just how well loved this song is.

I was aware of this coming to work the other day when I heard The Proclaimers being blasted out and noticed the kids at my local nursery were doing some kind of marching game to the song. Perhaps 500 Miles has become the Grand Old Duke of York for that generation.

As the full title of the track is I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) it should feature on tonight's show which is 'songs ( with brackets in the title).

    Hi Bryan

    or the fantastic
Gone Gone Gone (Done moved on) by Alison Krauss and Robert Plant - go on you know you want to play it!!!

Re: 500 miles by the Proclaimers I was in Southampton Airport on Monday waiting for my flight home to Inverness when I saw Craig and Charlie waiting in the cafe, it was so funny looking at folk doing a double take when they realised who they were! One of them was trying to use the payphone but it wasnt taking his money - if I had had any battery left on my own mobile I would have offered it to him!
They weren't even in the VIP lounge either! Hope they had a good flight approx 500 miles? to Edinburgh!!

Rocky Sharpe! What a cracking song! Never mind Top of the Pops memories, that song last night reminded me of my primary school discos!
