Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:56 UK time, Friday, 18 July 2008

A tremendously busy week last week on the show. I spent the whole week trying to catch up with the 'French' suggestions but ended up having so much stuff to play that they are still languishing in the folder. Sorry.

'Gems and precious stones' night was another busy one with some good puns coming in. Fergie in Aberdeen came up with my favourite - They Might Be Giants doing Istanbul ( not constant in opal). Genius. Here are next week's themes to get you started...

hi002840784.jpgMon:
Folk goes pop and pop goes folk on tonight's show. Let's have your suggestions of the pop acts who dabbled in folk, and the folkies who took their sound into the charts. Leave a comment on the blog or send me an e-mail over the weekend...
Tues:
Fiction Factory felt like it, Talking Heads sang about the bar, and for Belinda Carlisle it was definitely a place on earth. The theme is 'Heavenly songs' which has been suggested by Iain Lyall...
Wed:
Alan in Kirkcaldy and Morag on the e-mail have both suggested 'fruit' as a theme. From Raspberry Beret to The Banana Splits, you're bound to get your five a day by tuning in tonight...
Thurs:
From Rogers and Hart to Lennon and McCartney, tonight's show celebrates the great song writing partnerships. Can't imagnine Stock, Aitken and Waterman will make it into the top ten...

    MONDAY:

The Seekers "When Will The Good Apples Fall?" or "A World of our Own".

You could include something from the mockumentary "A Mighty Wind" which is the "Spinal Tap" of the folk world.

    MONDAY:

Quite difficult as it is really hard to know what is folk, folk rock, country, country rock etc etc!

    Anyway...a few suggestions:

Bruce Springsteen - Remember When the Music, This Land is Your Land, or Chimes of Freedom, both live covers (Harry Chapin, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan)

Van Morrison and the Chieftans - Raglan Road, a real favourite

10,000 maniacs - Hello in there (John Prine country or folk?)

Steve Earle - Rivers of babylon

    Cheers

    Norrie Maclean, Renfrew
    John Mellencamo

  • Comment number 3.

Oops that was meant to be John Mellencamp - lafayette (making Lucinda Williams folk to suit my purpose as this is a good version!)

  • Comment number 4.

For tuesday could I suggest Nirvana's "Come as you are". I think this is fairly appropriate since Nirvana is the heavenly state of being free of suffering and if I ever have to approach the Pearly Gates I'd like to think that a suit, tie and well shined shoes are unnecessary (although if that's what you normally wear you might want to stick with it).

For thursday's show on songwriting can I suggest a small nod of the head towards the Felt pairing of Lawrence and Deebank. Although not together for the whole of Felt's life they certainly created some beautiful sounds together. I'd particularly like to hear "Spanish House".

Other's I'd love to hear which I'm sure you'll get plenty of requests for include the likes of Squire and Brown, Butler and Anderson and Morrisey and Marr.

A folk goes pop suggestion (although it didn't chart as such) is the late Gordon Duncan (one of the greatest pipers of his and many other times) playing AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" - I would love to hear that on the show.

  • Comment number 6.

    TUESDAY:

"Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" - Tavares.

"My Blue Heaven" - Fats Domino

"You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)" - Dionne Warwick.

  • Comment number 7.

I am going to have a Simple Minds week this week and for Monday it will be 'Belfast Child' from their 'Street Fighting Years' album.
And while we are in that neck of the woods I would suggest Bryan Ferry's version of the folk song 'Carrickfergus' from 'The Bride Stripped Bare' album.

  • Comment number 8.

For TUESDAY, Simple Minds "Soundtrack For Every Heaven "

Also Roxy Music 'Psalm' has many Heavenly references.

  • Comment number 9.

MONDAY - The Byrds "Bells of Rhymney", Dick Gaughan "By the People, For the People" (from 'Different Kind of Love Song') if only to prove folkies should stick to what they know best, John Martyn "Spencer the Rover", Half Man Half Biscuit "Paintball's Coming Home" - a re-write of "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands".

  • Comment number 10.

    Hi Bryan,

For tonights programme, how about the following although more of a rock group going folk, would be Led Zeppelin with "Gallows Pole".

    Martin from Dunfermline

  • Comment number 11.

    Bryan

A bit hasty! Tonights request amongst others is

Kate Rusby - Daughter of Heaven

    as well as....

Trishia Yearwood - Heaven, Heartache and the Power of love

Maria McKee - Show Me Heaven

Sparks - No 1 Song in Heaven

    Heaven 17 - Temptation

Bruce Springsteen - All that Heaven Will Allow

The Who - Heaven and Hell

The Clash - Up In Heaven (Not only here)

Jackson Browne - Too Many Angels

Hank Williams - Heaven Holds My Treasures

    Cheers

  • Comment number 12.

    Hi Bryan,

For tonight's heavenly theme can you look out either "Tears in Heaven" form Eric Clapton or Stevie Wonder with "Heaven Help Us All"

    Martin from Dunfermline

  • Comment number 13.

Wednesday: Thought I'd do a RoxyJohn for today, but concentrate solely on bananas:

"Loving you has made me bananas" - Guy Marks.

"Hollaback Girl" - Gwen Stefani...you'd better make sure you have the radio-friendly version!

    "Banana Pancakes" - Jack Johnson

    "I'm Going Bananas" - Madonna

"30000 Pounds of Bananas" - Harry Chapin

"Yes, We Have No Bananas" - Spike Jones and his City Slickers

"Knock Me A Kiss" - Louis Jordan

  • Comment number 14.

    Bryan

For tonight a great start to the show would be:
The Cure - Just like Heaven (and, out of interest, this is one of a few songs I know where the title appears only as the last words of the song - others I can think of are Virginia Plain and Up the Junction. Are there enough for a theme?)

    Other possibilities:
If paradise is half as nice - Amen Corner
Knocking on Heaven's Door - Dylan
Cheek to Cheek - Sensational Alex Harvey Band ('Heaven, I'm in heaven ....)

    Best wishes

    Andy

  • Comment number 15.

Tavares "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel"
Amen Corner (or was it Manfred Mann?) "If Paradise is Half as Nice"
Van Morrison "Jacky Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven...)"
Heaven 17 "Crushed by the Wheels of Industry"
Public Image Ltd "And No Birds Sing" (features "This could be heeaaaaaven" repeatedly)

  • Comment number 16.

    Love the show!

    Suggestions for Tuesday

3 Steps to Heaven (Showaddywaddy or Eddie Cochrane)

    Halfway to Paradise (Billy Fury)

    Heaven (Bryan Adams)

    Slainte,
    Caoimhin

  • Comment number 17.

heaven Knows I'm miserable Know by The Smiths and the magnificent Morrissey

    Frodofeet, Las Vegas

  • Comment number 18.

It took us some time to think of a song without "heaven" in the title but appropriate for Tuesday's show.
Our suggestion is Deacon Blue's Cover From The Sky which is without Riki Ross's vocals.
Maybe "without" would be a good theme.
Examples Beatles without a Lennon McCartney written song. Queen without Freddy Mercury on lead vocals (year of 39)

  • Comment number 19.

How about: Vangelis 'Heaven And Hell'
Mary Chapin Carpenter's 'In My Heaven'
Madeline Peyroux 'This Is Heaven To Me'
Crowded House 'Heaven That I'm Making'
    The Monkees 'I'm A Believer' ??

  • Comment number 20.

    Wednesday Froot

    The Cranberries - Zombie

Little Steven and Rueben Blades - Bitter Fruit (so 80's so cheesy.....so good)

    Energy Orchard - Sailortown

Kid Creole and The Coconuts - Annie I'm not your Daddy (did you know the coconuts sang backing vocals on U2 War Album!)

Raspberries - Go all The Way

Johhny Cash and Fiona Apple - Father and Son! Just Brilliant. Cash's weary vocal is incredible.

    Cheers

For fruit night what about These Apples by Barenaked Ladies or Since Yesterday by Strawberry Switchblade. At a stretch you could have I like Chinese by Monty Python (the only songs I've ever heard to mention Lychees).

For themes across the week, you could have different styles (or quiet to loud) -Songs with the spoken wordAcapella / harmonies AcousticOrchestras / Choirs

A while back I suggested songs without the title in the song (because I'm a wee bit thick sometimes!) - stuff like, Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell Smells Like Teen - Spirit NirvanaU16 Girls - TravisBlue Monday - New OrderLove to hear this as I'm sure there are loads more!

  • Comment number 22.

    Hi Bryan,

Been looking forward to this one all week.

I missed out on the really short songs and would have suggested "A Small Fruit Song" by Al Stewart, so it's perfect for this evening.
Couple of other choices would be "Coconut" by Harry Nillson and the classic "Blackberry Way" by The Move.

Of course for your younger listeners, you could play something by "Melon Kim!"

    Martin in Dunfermline

Hi Bryan. Tried the blog yesterday. maybe did not work? First time trier. Programme is excellent. Where do the guys get their ideas from? Such memories. Here are some of mine. Al Stewart with 'A small fruit song'. (I see that Martin has already suggested that.) Quirky and could have fitted in with the shortest songs, AND the name of the song does not appear in the lyrics! A triple hit! Maybe also birthday boy David Essex, (62 today?) singing Oh! What a citrus? Any songs on the Apple Record label, or some Cream to go with the Strawbs? It is Summer at last after all! Hey, how about Moby Grape or the Rolling (prune) Stones? Another good one is 'Here we go round the Mullbery Bush' by, was it Spencer Davis or Traffic? Cheers Bryan.

    Bryan

'A Small Fruit Song' by Al Stewart came to my mind too. It would be nice to hear it. There is also the instrumental 'Once an Orange Always an Orange' from Al. I haven't heard it for many a long year: it might be a bit dull!

    Also how about:
    Strange Fruit - Billie Holiday
Black Horse and the Cherry Tree - KT Tunstall
    Grapefruit Moon - Tom Waits
    Blueberry Hill - Fats Domino

    Cheers

Talking of Tangerine Dream, they are playing at the new Edinburgh Picture House (open from sept 2008) on November the 2nd. This is one of their only two UK gigs, the other is at the Forum Kentish town in London the day before.
