Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:39 UK time, Friday, 25 July 2008

al.jpgAnother brilliant week last week so let's see what you come up for this lot. It's always a highlight to come into work and open the Get It On e-mail. ..
Mon:
Al Green, Jimmy Sommerville and The Bee Gees could all feature on tonight's show. Falsetto is the theme. Who hit the highest notes in pop? Email me with your suggestions or leave a comment on the blog...
Tue:
What has Hey Jude got in common with Can't Get You Out Of My Mind? Well, it's the bit of the song that everybody knows how to sing along to: La la la. What are the greatest la la las of all time? Shooby doos and doobie doos will not be accepted!
Wed:
It's numbers tonight which was suggested by Dorothy K in Gatehouse. However Valerie Hewson suggests we do separate hours for odd and evens. We'll do odd numbers in hour 1 and evens in hour 2. Send your suggestions for either to getiton@bbc.co.uk...
Thurs:
Kevin Wood suggests 'songs about your boss' for tonight's show. Let's have your tales of workplace woes and the songs you'd like to dedicate to the big boss. You Drive Me Crazy, Shaddapa Your Face, and maybe Take This Job and Shove It could all be on the playlist...

Monday: The song that immediately springs to my mind is "You are my world" by The Communards - such an uplifting sound...clear soaring vocal and fantastic piano.

Among my other favourite falsetto singers is Martyn Jacques of the wonderfully strange band The Tiger Lillies. Anything from the "Junk Opera" "Shockheaded Peter" may be interesting to play on radio. "Bully Boys" or the cautionary tale of what happens if you suck your thumb - "Snip Snip" give a good indication of what they're like.

  • Comment number 2.

Monday: I have got a few suggestions which slightly to my surprise are from some of my favourite artists:

Joan As Policewoman - great track from an outstanding album Real Life, the guest vocal from Antony on "I Defy" is outstanding.

Lou Reed - I saw Lou performing with Little Jimmy Scott at the Playhouse I think around 1992 and Jimmy Scott was indeed little, somewhat wizened but with an absolutely incredible voice. He perfortms with Lou on the track "Power and Glory" and its a superb performance on a great track. Not awfully cheery for a Monday evening though!

Bruce Springsteen - Bruce performs the track Lift Me Up entirely in falsetto but I would like to suggest All I'm Thinking About from Devils and Dust which is a great track and defintely is cheery enough for a Monday evening!!

Jackson Browne - Stay. Now if Bryan and the Team can use the Royal Concert Hall version that would be great as the Glasgow crowd are brilliant on this! I am sure we were all doing some falsetto!! If not the standard version from Running on Empty is of course memorable for David Lindley's falsetto! Speaking of which.....

David Lindley - El Rayo-X will get you dancing round the studio again!!

    Cheers

    Norrie MacLean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 3.

For falsetto day it's got to be the one and only Billy MacKenzie. Would anyone be brave enough to sing like that nowadays? Either Club Country or Party Fears Two. Going down the album route how about Skipping from Sulk?

May I just say good evening fellow bloggers.

  • Comment number 4.

You know every week I read the posts and always I think aaargh I should have or meant to say that. Julie especially, but Billy McKenzie is one who I really should have got! Party Fearas Two always fantastic to hear but....wouldnt it be great (as I dont think you can get this anymore) to hear one of his B.E.F tracks preferably the Bowie cover of Secret Life of Arabia!

    Norrie Maclean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 5.

Monday: Two singers spring immediately to mind - Frankie Valli of the Four Seasons, and Roy Orbison.

It would be great to hear Rag Doll, one of the Seasons' best IMHO, and the Big O's In Dreams, which slowly builds to a fantastic falsetto climax.

    Martin, Drybridge, Buckie

  • Comment number 6.

    Any of the following please:

    Queen - Somebody To Love
Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love
Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way
    A-ha - Take On Me
Lenny Kravitz - It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

  • Comment number 7.

I am not sure if this suggestion is for Monday or Tuesday: Yanick Ettiene's vocal at the end of Roxy Music's Avalon. Bryan Ferry and producer Rhett Davies where working on the track in a studio in Nassau and needed something for the final refrain of the track but just didn't know what. They went into the corridor for a coffee and heard the voice of an Angel coming from the studio next door and they asked the girl to sing sing on Avalon. The result is nothing short if beautiful.

A bit of trivia: Yanick Ettiene is the only woman to perform on a Roxy Music record (so far)

  • Comment number 8.

    Wednesday:
ODD NUMBER Roxy Music 'Three And Nine' refering to the cost of a cinema ticket when Ferry went to the Odeon, La Scala or was it the Roxy when he was a lad.

Ferry also has a song called The 39 Steps but it's by far one of his best.

    EVEN NUMBER

Roxy Music '2HB' is an ode 'To Humphrey Bogart' and the song makes many references to the movie 'Casablanca' Ferry re-recorded it for a solo album and I prefer the version on the 'Let's Stick Together' album. Madness who where big Roxy fans had a b-side called '4BF' as a pastiche of '2HB' and it meant 'for Bryan Ferry'

This reminds me of a suggestion for a theme 'Songs that the title is not in the lyrics'

  • Comment number 9.

Monday: ...how could I have forgotten - Del Shannon. Hats Off To Larry or Little Town Flirt would be good.

The Beatles' Long Tall Sally features Paul's top register, and, let's not forget - the master -

    Tiny Tim!

  • Comment number 10.

Tuesday - Tremendous theme! Any of these (obvious) ones would be gr8:"Has anybody here seen my old friend Martin? Can you tell me where he's gone?"; "Sittin' in the mornin' sun..."; "Drinkin' all night, got into a fight, I feel so broke up, I wanna go home"; "No I can't forget the feeling nor your face as you were leaving" or "Once upon a time there was light in my life, now there's only love in the dark..."

  • Comment number 11.

Monday FALSETTO Roxy Music 'Sentimental Fool' this was a great opening track on the 1975 tour when Ferry performed the opening falsetto lines from off stage and appeared from the side halfway through the first verse to make a dramatic intrance.

    Tuesday LAs

Simple Minds the close of 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' "... I said La, la la la la, la la la la...."

Another piece of trivia is that Kieth Forsey who wrote this song offered it to Bryan Ferry first but he turned it down as his father had just died and didn't have the time to do it. Simple Minds where third choice behind Billy Idol who turned it down after Ferry.

  • Comment number 12.

Afternoon, everyone! We've got a great soundtrack for your summer evening tonight. Some great suggestions for the falsetto theme already and a great summer mix from Kene Gelly.

If Madhu's reading this...we love your Tuesday suggestions but don't think they refer to tomorrow night's La La La theme...Bonnie Tyler, Nilsson, Otis...are they maybe for one of the previous weeks' subjects?!

    Let us know!

    Producer Mandi

  • Comment number 13.

Dion - Book of Dreams (Springsteen Cover)!!

Billy Joel - The Longest Time

    Cheers

    Norrie MacLean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 14.

    Tuesday

La La Love You - The Pixes

Ooh La La - The Faces

La Bamba - Richie Valens/ Los Lobos

    Mr Jones - Counting Crows

    Ooh La La - Goldfrapp

    Norrie MacLean., Renfrew

  • Comment number 15.

For the La La La show, how about The Passenger by Iggy Pop?

Siouxsie and the Banshees had a good version of this as well, but Iggy's is my favourite.

It would be good to hear something other than Lust for Life which usually gets the nod.

  • Comment number 16.

    This weeks themes

I would love to hear Ooh la la by Goldfrapp as suggested by Norrie.
or Ooh la la la (lets go dancing) by Kool and the Gang.

Thanks for the reminder about Desperate Fishwives I heard a trailer whilst driving and nearly crashed l was laughing so much! Just listening to it on "listen again" I dont think I have heard anything so funny in a long time! OOOps I digress.

For the even number hour I would really love to hear Sonnet 18 by Bryan Ferry, it is a beautiful musical rendition of Shakespeare - a bit different!!

    or some more evens:

2-4-6-8 Motorway - Tom Robinson Band is a classic as is the 12th of Never by Donny Osmond.

For the odds: Three Little Birds - Bob Marley,
    or my very favourite
Summer of 69 - Bryan Adams taking me back to the days of young love - my mamma did have a porch, but alas the swearing of love was not forever but I have been happily married to someone else for over 20 yrs! At the time they probably were some of the best days of my life!

Boss night - Well to be a good boss you may have to be "tougher than the rest" which can only be by "the boss" himself Bruce Springsteen

    Cheers! Suzi, Inverness

  • Comment number 17.

    TUESDAY

    Bowie; Starman (la la la)
Lou Reed: Walk on the Wildside (do do do)
Half Man Half Biscuit: "Venus in Flares" (and I went la la la la la la la - just like everyone else does when they can't think of any more words)

  • Comment number 18.

We never got him in the falsetto voices, so how about
La La La La, La La La La, La La La La, La La La, La La La La La, La La La La La!
If Paradise Is Half As Nice - by Amen Corner.
And you'll find that is the correct numbers of La's.
    Martin in Dunfermline

  • Comment number 19.

For the LA LA LA show:

    Smiths: Sheila Take A Bow

    Al Green: Sha La La

  • Comment number 20.

Not sure whether these are la-las, da-das or na-nas, but hopefully one or two will fit for tonight:

Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds
Sweat (A La La La La Long) - Inner Circle
The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel
Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye - Bananarama

  • Comment number 21.

    Hey Guys

    probably too late

    Ooh La La - Goldfrapp

    Frodofeet LV

  • Comment number 22.

    Norrie Maclean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 23.

    For the odd numbers...

Seven Minutes To Midnight by Wah Heat...the forgotten Liverpool band.

    For the evens...

    I'm Eighteen by Alice Cooper.

Wasn't this the track that Johnny Rotten sang along to when auditioning in a pub for the Sex Pistols? Sure it was.

May I just say good morning fellow bloggers.

  • Comment number 24.

    Good morning, bloggers!

Thanks for all the brilliant suggestions for last night's show. The studio was awash with paper by 8 o'clock (all recycled, you'll be happy to know)!

Looks like tonight will be another busy one, too, for Producer Barbara's return from sunny France.

Oh, and if anyone is still experiencing problems with getting their messages on Bryan's blog, can you let me know by dropping an email to getiton@bbc.co.uk. The techy bods know about the intermittent fault and are trying to get to the bottom of it....soon, we all hope! Thanks for your patience!

  • Comment number 25.

    Thursday Boss Songs:

Suzi is spot on with her suggestion that we have something from "the Boss" himself.

I'm employed in an industry that is starting to feel the pinch at the moment and so Bruce's Working on the Highway or The River for the lines "I got a job working construction for the Johnstown Company
But lately there ain't been much work on account of the economy" is particularly apt!

    Others:

Working Class Hero - John Lennon (too many swears though)

    Career Opportunities - The Clash

Out of Work - Gary US Bonds

Hard Woman (to please) - Mick Jagger

    Cheers

    Norrie Maclean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 26.

Wednesday - "Only ONE You" - T.G.Sheppard, "FOUR The Good Times" - Kriss Kristofferson. from Julie from Edinburgh (but in John O'Groats today).

  • Comment number 27.

The King of Rock n Roll by Prefab Sprout is allegedly about Bruce Springsteen (The Boss).

This would be a good one for Thursday's show.

How about the theme from Top Cat as well? Don't know if it was ever released as a single but it would be great to hear it on the show.

    Also known as Boss Cat!

May I just say good evening fellow bloggers.

  • Comment number 28.

LLIM ~ must admit I didnt know that one about The King of Rock n Roll but I am going to add it to my mental list of Boss Trivia!

Good Evening / Morning to you as well.

and if anyone is interested kathy dawn was abolutely fantastic, with some really wonderful performances and I'm hoping that some of next weeks themes might give me the chance to suggest some of her music for next week.

    Cheers

    Norrie Maclean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 29.

How about "honey, I'm home" by Shania Twain.

Allentown by Billy Joel may also fit the theme.

On a personal note a recent boss introduced me me to the music of Aberfeldy, so that tenuous link might allow you to play "Vegetraian Restuarant" (which is of course a song about a workplace).

Thanks for playing 100 days, 100 Nights.

    Cheers

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 30.

Oops - apologies for my typos!

    Joe

  • Comment number 31.

    Thursday:

Creedence Clearwater Revival: "Proud Mary" ("woikin' for the Man every night and day")
The Pogues: "Boys from the County Hell" (censorship warning though...)
    Dylan "Maggie's Farm"
    Smiths "Heaven Knows..."
Kevin Ayers "Stranger in Blue Suede Shoes"

    Roll on the weekend...

  • Comment number 32.

My ex boss had two young sons and was so mean that at Xmas time, he got his secretary to photocopy a colouring book so he only had to pay for one!!

He also made his son gets the name MOLS on the back of his football shirt as he wouldn't pay for any more letters.

Please Play 'Moneys too tight to mention' by Simply Red or 'If I had a $1,000,000' by Barenaked Ladies.
