This week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:40 UK time, Friday, 11 July 2008

paris.jpgHere we go again. I hope we've got another good week of themes lined up for you. We have a done a couple of them before but I think they are worth coming back to...
Monday:
We celebrate Bastille Day by playing an hour of all things French. This could include French artists, songs with a bit of French in them or tracks that reference it's towns and cities. Just don't suggest PARIS Hilton! A great summer mix lined up for part 2...
Tuesday:
Days Like This is our new story writing project which launches this week. You can find more info at bbc.co.uk/radioscotland/dayslikethis. I thought it would be appropriate to do a show celebrating pop's great storytellers. Call or text during the show or e-mail getiton@bbc.co.uk....
Wednesday:
Tim Green and Neil Martin have both suggested 'songs that reference other musicians' as a theme. We could end up playing our own Tom Morton's Learning To Hate The Beatles or maybe Dexys doing Jackie Wilson Said. Get the thinking caps on and leave your suggestions on the blog
Thursday:
Diamonds Are Forever could be on the playlist tonight as precious stones and gems is the theme. Let's have your suggestions to getiton@bbc.co.uk

  • Comment number 2.

me again...just seen that this technology doesn't read French! Hope you can translate the odd symbols put in in place!

  • Comment number 3.

Great idea for monday - can I suggest anything by the genius Georges Brassens. My particular favourite would be "Les amoureux des bancs publics"

I also love the references to other musicians theme. I was making the tea last night listening to the "Help" album and I heard Sinead O'Connor mention the "Black eyed peas" in her track "Ode to Billy Joe" the Bobby Gentry version is pretty good too.

  • Comment number 4.

    Voulez Vous-Abba and Vogue-Madonna.

    Gordon,Kirriemuir

  • Comment number 5.

For Bastille day there can only be one song.
    Altered Images. Happy Birthday ;-)

Who was it who sang the rat tat tat ta song? I vaguely remember the joke about the lawnmower...

    Davie on the High Seas

  • Comment number 6.

Davie on the high seas - The 'rat tat tat tat' song is called 'Chanson D'amour' by Manhattan Transfer.

    So what's the lawnmower joke?

  • Comment number 7.

And a pretty obvious suggestion - Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy.

  • Comment number 8.

There are some terrible French Cover versions of UK pop songs but here's one of the better ones.

'LA NUIT LE JOUR' By LES TERRIBLES

    It's a Kinks tune.

    Dexter

  • Comment number 9.

    Inspiration through the night

Kraftwerk Tour de France, big stage in the Pyrenees today, woohoo

  • Comment number 10.

Anything by the Stranglers, Jean Jacque Burnel is the link

  • Comment number 11.

    Foer Wednesday
    Lynyrd Skynyrd Sweet Home Alabama

  • Comment number 12.

    Partly in French:

Blur featuring Francoise Hardy - La Comedie (To The End)

  • Comment number 13.

    How about:

Wouldn't It Be NICE - The Beach Boys
Take Me Out - France Ferdinand
    Eton R-Eiffels - The Jam
    It's Aw-Louvre Now - Rolling Stones

  • Comment number 14.

    TUE:
    Marty Robbins - "El Paso
Elvis Presley - "In The Ghetto"
Bob Seger (or Dave Edmunds) - "Get Out Of Denver"
Ian Dury - "My Old Man"
Chuck Berry - "You Never Can Tell"

WED: "Down at the Twist and Shout" by Mary Chapin Carpenter mentions the Cajun band BEAUSOLEIL.

  • Comment number 15.

    hello to the g-squad

  • Comment number 16.

TUE: Forgot a good tale of infidelity, revenge and a barroom brawl..."Trouble Is A Woman" by Julie Reeves.

  • Comment number 17.

A couple of thoughts for tonight's show:-

    'Michelle' Beatles

    'Chantilly Lace' Big Bopper

    'My Cherie Amor' Stevie Wonder

and for tomorrow the greatest storyteller must be Kenny Rodgers - preferrably 'The coward of the county' - a complete picture in four? verses

  • Comment number 18.

I decided to have a Kate Bush week this week so for the French Theme it could be:

"Ne t'en fui pas" b-side to "There Goes a Tenner" and it was also an A-side in France with "Un baiser d'enfant" as its b-side.

I can't resist this Roxy song as it is my all time favourite "A Song For Europe" where Ferry has a Latin chant and also a section sung in French. I learned this Latin and French off by heart and used it to pretend I knew some languages to impress the girls when I was a teenager. .....it didn't work.

  • Comment number 19.

    Hi Bryan,

    Joe The Jam Man.

  • Comment number 20.

Haven't heard it but Malvina Reynolds has a song called 'Let Them Eat Cake'.Anybody know it?

  • Comment number 21.

Tuesdays theme should be absolutely fantstic as there are so many great "storytellers"

Starting simple Van Morrison - Days Like These

John Prine - These Days - I love JohnPrine but must admit that 10,000 maniacs version of this great stortelling song is fantastic.

Nanci Griffith - Love at the Five at Dime

The Clash - On Broadway from Sandinista (Strummer at his intense best, I remember the Clash opening with this at the Apollo which was really throwing down the gauntlet to the punk masses!). Brilliant stuff.

    Indigo Girls - Gallileo

    Tracy Chapman - Subcity

    Cheers

    Norrie Maclean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 22.

I am still trying to remember the joke about the lawnmower, I was in P4 at the time.....

For tonights show Rod Stewart, The killing of Georgie Parts 1 and 11

  • Comment number 23.

    Wednesday:

Bruce Springsteen – Thunder Road (Roy Orbison singing for the lonely…..)

    Sparks – Lighten Up, Morrissey

David Bowie – Drive In Saturday (when people stared as Jagger’s eyes…., also recently covered by Morrissey)

Mary Chapin Carpenter – I feel Lucky (naming not one but two fellow Americana stars Lyle Lovett and Dwight Yoakam, great feel-good track)

Van Morrison – In the Days Before Rock n Roll (Van name checks a lot of his influences including Radio stations, Elvis, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Sonny Terry, Little Richard, Muddy Waters, John lee Hooker, Jerry lee Lewis). Great if a wee bit unusual Van track from brilliant enlightenment album.

A great storytelling song is 1952 Vincent Black Lightning by Richard Thompson.

    Andy

  • Comment number 25.

    Hi Bryan,

I live in Glasgow but I'm working in Dumfries at the moment and love listening to your show when I'm driving home.

Currently sitting in my hotel room thinking of songs for Wednesday night and I've phoned my Dad for help! How about 'When Smokey Sings' by ABC, The Jackson Five 'ABC', Bob Dillon 'Like a Rolling Stone' and The Beatles 'Lady Madonna'.

For Thursday 'Diamond Ring' by Bon Jovi from These Days album.

    Deese

  • Comment number 26.

    Some ideas for Wednesday's show...

"Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder (or "The Duke" by Dave Brubeck)
"There's A Guy Down at the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis" by Kirsty MacColl
"Blind Willie McTell"... a Dylan song covered a few times, my favorite is by Elliott Murphy and Iain Mathews
"From Hank to Hendrix" by Neil Young
"Lloyd I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" by Camera Obscura
"Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby Stills and Nash... though the lyrics don't actually mention Judy (Collins), do they?

An American singer named Dar Williams has a hilarious song called "I Won't Be Your Yoko Ono" but I'm guessing that hasn't crossed the pond...

    Bruce Nesmith
    Cedar Rapids IA USA

  • Comment number 27.

    Menshies for other groups -

Be my Yoko Ono , Barenaked Ladies (please please please play it...)

    Squeeze Box, The Who
    Lilly the Pink, Scaffold
3 is the Magic Number(s), De La Soul

  • Comment number 28.

    Bryan

I really enjoyed Story Tellers last night - but could have done without Chris de Burgh!!

    Name checks

In order of preference for tonight (but all good!):
Sweet Gene Vincent - Ian Dury
Rory is Gone - Christie Campbell (not only for Rory Gallagher, but also name checking loads of great bluse guitarists like Muddy Waters and the Nighthawk)
Levi Stubb's Tears - Billy Bragg
White man in the Hammersmith Palais - The Clash (name checks reggae stars like Dillinger and Leroy Smart)

    Andy

  • Comment number 29.

Woops! - I meant Christie Moore of course.

    Andy

  • Comment number 30.

WED: Mary Chapin Carpenter seems to be a serial referencer of other musicians...even accidentally...

"HALLEY (Bill? (and I know it's a different spelling)) came to JACKSON (Browne?)"

    "STONES in the Road",

    "One Small HEART"

    "Goodnight AMERICA"

  • Comment number 31.

Had meant to include this one in my previous posting, its a great track by Andy White who is a great guy and tremenfous live performer:

Andy White - Me, The Moon, My Car and You

In this song Andy namechecks very briefly Spsringsteen, "I've got Bruces romantic vision" and uses the refrain from Racing in the Street briliantly.

    Really good stuff.

  • Comment number 32.

There are any number of one-word artists mentioned in song titles (Dancing QUEEN, HEART of Glass, PRINCE Charming, RUSH Hour, Lady MADONNA, KISS From A Rose, et cetera). Multiple artists are mentioned in "We Didn't Start The Fire" by Billy Joel, including 'Beatlemania', which also appears in "London Calling" by The Clash. It would be great to hear either of those, or alternatively -

The Miracle - Queen (Jimi Hendrix)
Walking In Memphis - Marc Cohn (Elvis Presley)
    Buddy Holly - Weezer

And if you want a change of pace, there is of course "Right Said Fred" by Bernard Cribbins!

  • Comment number 33.

Hi Bryan and GIO team, have a couple of suggestions for tonight: Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple mentions "Frank Zappa and the Mothers" come to think of it, this would have fitted in with lastnights story theme. The song was written about a fire in a hotel they were staying at. Also Censorship by The Ramones (" Ask Ozzy, Zappa or me we'll tell you what it's like to be free" ). The wonderstuff had a song called Never Loved Elvis, or maybe that was an album title.

  • Comment number 34.

Diamond Smiles - The Boomtown Rats

Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez

Diamonds on Her Windshield - Tom Waits

    Diamonds and Pearls - Prince

And it might not quite fit in but Justin Curries Gold Dust and Fleetwood Macs Gold Dust Woman might just sneak in.....or be kept for another theme?

    Cheers

    Norrie maclean, Renfrew

Hi Bryan, thanks for playing my Queen song 'Now I'm Here' on Wednesday, first time lucky. As an absolutely huge Queen fan (my youngest son is named after all the band members) I wracked my brains for a Queen song with a gem in it and came up with Spread Your Wings from the News of the World album. Single got to number 17 I think in 1977. If you don't know the song it is about a young guy called Sammy who has aspirations about getting out of his dead end job but his boss thinks he should just be happy working in his bar which is why the Emerald Bar gets a mention every time the chorus is sung.

Going for 2/2, thanks again Bryan.

    Colin Nicol.

  • Comment number 36.

The Days of Pearly Spencer - Marc Almond
    Ruby Tuesday - Rolling Stones
and maybe your opening track could be STONES -Neil Diamond.

  • Comment number 37.

    Bryan,

"Pearl's A Singer" by Elkie Brookes haven't heard this in a while.

"Oh Ru - uby! Don't take your love to Town" by the one and only Kenny Rogers - I hope not to hear that for a while too.

And of course "Jet" by Wings wouldn't go amiss.

    Thanks

    THURSDAY:

    The Jam: Precious

Or a Sam Cooke song that works both lyrically ("I'll give you jewellery...") and as a pun: Bling It On Home To Me

  • Comment number 39.

And of course Bbbbbenny and the Jets by Elton and Leaving on a Jetplane by John Denver.

    Colin Nicol.

  • Comment number 40.

    Hi!
I wanted to suggest "Sapphire" by John Martyn or "Ruby's Arms" by Tom Waits for the gems theme.
    Thanks

  • Comment number 41.

Just how good was that version of Diamonds and Rust!Mary Chapin Carpenter adds some magic with her harmony vocals on so many peoples work.....so can you tell me what album its on??

    Cheers
