Next Week's themes

Bryan Burnett | 13:41 UK time, Friday, 1 August 2008

Time for another week's themes. Hopefully there will be something here to tempt you to text in or leave a comment on the blog. BTW, sport is back on Monday so there's a choice of listening. If you want the latest football news then Sportsound is on medium wave and digital and if you want two hours of the best music mix then we will be on FM only...

Monday:
Hungry Heart, Born To Run and Dancing In The Dark could all feature tonight...but not by Bruce. It's Springsteen cover versions for the first hour and a great summer mix for the second...

Tuesday:
What are the songs that remind you of your first kiss? That's the question posed by Stuart in Aberdeen. Email getiton@bbc.co.uk...

Wednesday:
We will be wheeling in the Get It On drinks trolley for tonight's show. Feel free to help yourself to a Tequilla Sunrise, a Black Velvet or maybe some Whiskey In The Jar...

Thursday:
Celebrating the Olympics, tonight's theme is bronze, silver and gold. Send in your medal winning tunes by e-mail or leave a comment on the blog....

  • Comment number 1.

Wednesday - guess 'milk and alcohol' is an obvious suggestion, so too the work of orange juice, so what about 'i get a kick out of you' (mebbe Satch's version?) or 'will you'. Slainte mhath!

  • Comment number 2.

A few suggestions for Monday, although some are rather obvious:

Because the Night - Patti Smith
Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band
    Fire - Pointer Sisters
All that heaven will allow - The Mavericks
    Downbound Train - Raul Malo
    From Small Things....- Dave Edmunds
If I should fall behind - Linda Ronstatdt or Faith Hill
    Sad Eyes - Trisha Yearwood
Mas Es Amar (Sad Eyes) - Enrique Inglesias
    Thunder Road - Cowboy Junkies
    You're Missing - Cowboy Junkies.
Tougher than the rest - Emmylou Harris
    Hungry Heart - Minnie Driver!!

This theme has sparked a bit of a disgreement with my brother-in-law over who wrote/covered Jersey Girl. He says it was written by Springsteen and covered by Tom Waits. I'm right - of course - in asserting that it was writen and performed by Tom Waits and covered by the Boss. It is well worth a play either way!!

Great theme - apologies for the long list.

  • Comment number 3.

    Joe - great selection!

    My suggestions....

Dancing In The Dark - Mary Chapin Carpenter
Because The Night - 10,000 maniacs
Streets of Philapdelphia - David Gray
    Used Cars - Ani DiFranco
    Growin Up - David Bowie

As you know could go on................

    Cheers

    Norrie Maclean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 4.

Tuesday - Shut Up and Kiss Me - Mary Chapin carpenter

  • Comment number 5.

    MONDAY:
"Streets of Philadelphia" - Bettye LaVette...one of those stop-what-you're-doing-and-just-listen songs.

    WEDNESDAY:
Mary Gauthier - "I Drink". Somebody told me about this song just the other day - it's brilliant!
"Gimme a Pigfoot and a Bottle of Beer" - Bessie Smith

  • Comment number 6.

Mon. Nobody does it like Springsteen

Tue. Please Stay - Cryin' Shames

Wed. Sugar Turns to Alcohol - Dr. Feelgood
    (not Milk and Alcohol)

Thur. Who Do You Love? - Juicy Lucy
    (on the Bronze label)
You Got the Silver - R. Stones
King Midas In Reverse - Hollies

  • Comment number 7.

Wednesday:- ' Chug-a-lug ', Roger Miller's hilarious take on the perils of discovering alcohol at an early age.
' Alcohol ', from my favourite Kinks album
    ' Muswell Hillbillies '
    George Thorogood and the Destroyers'
' One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer '
A long song, but in a two hour show there
    should be room for it.

  • Comment number 8.

    THURSDAY:
    Prelude - "After the GOLDrush"
    Rilo Kiley - "SILVER Lining"
    Idlewild - "BRONZE Medal"

  • Comment number 9.

    Monday

Can you please play Heather Nova's cover of 'I'm on Fire'. Alternatively, howe about:-
Badly Drawn Boy - Thunder road
The Hollies - 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)
    Steve Earle - State Trooper

    Wednesday

Divine Comedy - Gin Soaked Boy
    Blur - Coffee and TV
The Cardigans - I need some fine wine and you, you need to be nicer
    Jeff Buckley - Lilac Wine

Beautiful South - Good as Gold
Neil Young - Heart of Gold
    Klaxons - Golden Skans
    The Pixies - Silver
Jeff beck - Hi Hop Silver Lining
    Idlewild - The Bronze Medal

    Stephen from Invergordon

  • Comment number 10.

How about songs that mention Brand Names as an idea for a theme?

Don't know if this would be okay with the ´óÏó´«Ã½, but I guess records like that get played all the time?

Germ Free Adolescents by X-Ray Spex could be a possible contender (Listerine).

May I just say good afternoon fellow bloggers.

  • Comment number 11.

Afraid Monday is not the show for me and I know I will be unpopular with fellow bloggers when I say I am not a Bruce fan but there we go, if we all liked the same things and all that ;-)
Anyway my blog today is to ask if Adam from Rio has retired?

First kiss takes me back to summer '62 and Jerry Keller's 'Here comes summer' and I really did have a flat-top in those days.

For Wednesday I suggest Jerry Lee Lewis's 'Drinking wine spo-dee, o'dee'
Great for getting the barbecue fired up to.

  • Comment number 13.

    Morning all

First, can I say agree with glenmiller - I expect that most of this evening's songs will be interesting and enjoyable but few will be in the same class as Springsteen's versions. That said, while pottering about on itunes over the weekend I came across a great Catalan version of Worlds Apart (Mons Apart) by Maria del Mar Bonet.

For Wednesday's alcohol theme can I suggest:
Little old wine drinker me - Dean Martin
Two more bottles of wine - Emmylou Harris
    Glass of Champagne - Sailor
Red, Red Wine - UB40 or Neil Diamond
Brandy (you're a fine girl) - Looking Glass
Moon over Bourboun Street - Sting
    Manhattan - Ella Fitzgerald
    Strawberry Wine - Deanna Carter

    Cheers!

    HI Bryan,

For tonight's Springsteen covers, 2 that have already been mentioned are:
Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann's Earthband
Dancing in the Dark - Mary Chapin Carpenter (a beautiful acoustic version)and one other would be
I'm on Fire - Tori Amos

I'm still waiting for my first kiss, so I'll get back to you on Wednesday.

  • Comment number 16.

    "Thunder Road" by Boyzone
    "Badlands" by Stepps
    "Radio Nowhere" by Vashti Bunyan

I might be more interested tomorrow ;-)

  • Comment number 17.

Harry....sorry but for the Boss fans it was a good hour!

I wont suggest any more Bruce for a day or so!! Hope some of these might appeal more ~

Mary Chapin Carpenter - Shut Up and Kiss Me

    Lucinda Williams - Passionate Kisses

    Faith Hill - This kiss

Van Morrison - Give Me a Kiss

Bryan Ferry - Kiss and Tell

Morrisey - Let me Kiss You

    Cheers

    Norrie MacLean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 18.

    Tuesday:

I'd love to hear Louis Armstrong singing "A Kiss To Build A Dream On".

  • Comment number 19.

    First Kiss Night -
Together in Electric Dreams by Oakley/ Moroder reminds me of kissing at the school disco and the embarrassingly cheesy I Swear by All 4 One reminds me of a first major kiss goodbye.

Other kiss lyrics could be -
Allelujah , Fairground Attraction - 'We'll kiss the first of a million kisses'

The Wrong Man was Convicted, Barenaked Ladies - ' It's cruel, unusual punishment to kiss fingerprinted skin'

    Drinks Night -

Tequila, Terrorvision (and the joke about why did the Mexican push his wife down the stairs...)

Black Velvet, Maria McKie (Guiness and Champagne I think?)

    2 Pints of Lager, Slogenessabounds

    Margerita Time, Status Quo.

    Born Slippy, Leftfield - 'Lagerlagerlager'!

  • Comment number 20.

Sorry, Black Velvet was by Alannah Myles!

  • Comment number 21.

    For the drinks trolley night...

    Hops and Barley by Leatherface.

One to get you off your seat.

    Hic!

  • Comment number 22.

Cheers to Kirsty for reminding me about school discos! My suggestion for Tuesday's First Kiss Theme has to be (and this wasn't a deliberate link) Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy - Kiss Me
Ah...the memories are flooding back...secret cider drinking and smoking behind the church hall!
Not sure how well this track has aged but I loved it at the time and does remind me of some major teenage akwardness and snogging!

  • Comment number 23.

    First kiss.....

Ah... down "Corby Slap", the strangely named right-of-way near our school, very little in the way of awkward 13-year-old conversation, close your eyes, hope your breath's all right, and - wow! Life takes on a whole new meaning. Sadly, that cruel cruel Pauline finished with me the next day. I can't remember any music that specifically coincided with the events above, but the b-side of Jilted John's "Going Steady" reflects a somewhat later series of kisses:

    "I go with her to watch telly, the kids are horrible and the house is dead smelly;
    "But it's all worth it coz when they've gone to bed, we start snogging on the so-o-fa;
    "Yeah yeah, I love Sharon
    "Yeah yeah, she loves me.
"Yeah Yeah, we love each other,
    "And we're so happy!"

    Magic stuff.

  • Comment number 24.

    Hi Bryan,

I'm with Maria and Harry on the Springsteen issue, I'm just glad I didn't have to listen to the man himself. I know, you can't please all of the people...blah blah blah

Looking forward to the rest of the week though.

    Wednesday.

I truly love a track by Lou Reed on his Blue Mask album called Underneath the Bottle.

Tom Waits - The Piano Has been Drinking (Not Me)

Merle Haggard - Drink Up and Be Somebody

Del Amitri - Stone Cold Sober and / or Drunk In a Band

Looking forward to tomorrows show and Thursdays which I think i have got a real couple of cracking suggestions!

    Cheers all

  • Comment number 26.

    Hi all

Please dont play that terrible eagles dirge!

This is a guilty pleasure I would rather be posting mozz / punky requests but I enjoy the odd night in Margretaville so Jimmy Buffet will bring a bit of Nevada Sunshine to Scotland.

Hi to all my Scots pals....you now who you are!

Here's a couple for people who like their pints...

She's So Heavy by The Beatles

    and

  • Comment number 28.

    Tom Waits, Gin Soaked Boy
and a couple of others I have now forgotten.

    Wh'appen?

  • Comment number 29.

    Hi Harry

Not meaning to stick my oar in but there was a commnet on the show last night that the problem has been to do with odd symbols - ampersands, squiggles, and so on.

Nor sure if that helps any....

  • Comment number 30.

    I'll have a...
    Red,Red Wine UB40
    Bittersweet Symphony VERVE
    Cigarettes and Alcohol OASIS
    and a packet of crisps.

    Cheers

    Thursday Bronze, Siver, Gold:

Been waiting all week for this as it gives me the chance to nominate tracks from two of my all time favourite albums:

The first two are from the brilliant Gene Clark and his incredible album No Other :

    Gene Clark - Silver Raven
Gene Clark - From a Silver Phial

A more recent album but I honestly think will prove to be a classic is Justin Curries What is Love For, so

    Justin Currie - Gold Dust

    Great album, deserves more exposure.

    Cheers

Great show last night. I can't believe I forgot to suggest Cerys Matthews' Chardonnay. I saw her at the Oran Mor a year or so ago, and that was one of the stand-out tracks from the set.

I'm afraid I'm struggling a bit for suggestions for tonight. My wife - Jane - suggested "Silver Lady" by David Soul. I'll understand if you don't play that!! Also, Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey. Perhaps a better suggestion is "Silver threads and golden needles" - there are lots of versions of course including the Springfields/Dusty and Linda Ronstadt.

I don't think you've played Emmylou Harris recently - so Queen of the Silver Dollar would be good.

    Apologies - nothing Bronze.

    Keep up the good work

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 36.

Norrie - there may have been ampersands in there, but it got lost so I don't know! No, I have now researched, and it was the inverted commas (which is a problem for me, as that's how I usually mark titles)

    Inevitably for tonight:

    Silver Machine from Hawkwind;
but as I have moaned long and loud in the past, this is about their only song that ever gets played, so....
since they recorded (briefly) on the Bronze label in the late 70s, we could also be treated to Shot Down in the Night from the Live 79 album, or Levitation from the album of the same name.

Also Silver by Echo and the Bunnymen

Bryan - apologies for the double text rant last night, but I honestly couldn't believe that ELO's El Dorado was getting airplay. It sounded like a bunch of tired old men with too much studio time and money for strings, etc casting round aimlessly for something to sing. Oh - that's what it was! Each to his own I suppose.

it took me 5 minutes to realise I had left an ampersand in Echo etc.!

  • Comment number 37.

    Harry

Good shout about the Bronze label....thats about all I could come up with last night! Notable artists included y Motorhead, Gene Pitney, Manfred Manns Earth Band, Suicide and Andy McKay of Roxy!!

  • Comment number 38.

If you over-indulged in last night's splendid drinks trolley, you may want to remember that Lily the Pink invented medicinal compounds, most efficacious in every way.

  • Comment number 39.

Norrie, I had Suicide down as a Red Star band, or was that a subdivision of Bronze?

  • Comment number 40.

Smalltown Boy please, by Bronze-ki Beat.

  • Comment number 41.

    Hi Bryan and GIO team,

And hello fellow bloggers! Harry especially, I did enjoy Silver Machine but I have to admit I am a little disappointed in you! My partner plays in a Hawkwind covers band and says you should have asked for The Golden Void by Hawkwind. Tut Tut!!

    Also rans:

    Golden Brown by The Stranglers
    Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey

Anything by Goldie Lookin Chain or Silverfish.

    AliandtheWinters
    Bonnybridge

  • Comment number 42.

    Hi Harry!

Yes you are right - but the 23 minutes over Belgium was released on Bronze as a promo flexidisc!

Bryan has resisted all requests to play Frankie Teardrop thus far!!!

    Remember them!! (flexidiscs I mean)

    Cheers

    Norrie

  • Comment number 43.

Ali - I am distraught at missing the opportunity (though Bryan'll never play Golden Void anyway! - there's a challenge). A Hawkwind covers band ---- tell me more!!

Norrie - I've tried Frankie Teardrop out on long songs, scary songs, songs with stories. No success. What can you do with a man that prefers El Dorado?

  • Comment number 44.

    Harry

I am only glad that El Dorado deflect the flak from my Boss Covers night, Ry Cooders version of Little Sister and Elvis's Tomorroe is a Long Time! I was on a roll of complained about choices!!

    Cheers

    Norrie

  • Comment number 45.

    Norrie

Can I complain about the Badly Drawn Boy cover. It was murder polis.

    Harry

Relax geezer - ELO went on to be the new Beatles only better.

    Regards

    Max B Gold
