Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:48 UK time, Friday, 8 August 2008

Thanks again for another great week, especially 'drinks trolley' night which was the busiest of the week. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for this week. Thursday's 'bagpipe' theme could be a bit of a challenge so I'm really appealing for your help in trying to come up with something that could fit. Don't fancy Mull of Kintyre on a loop for the hour!!!

boghall.jpgMonday
There's only one show in town this week, so we'll do China as a theme tonight. One of our regular bloggers Norrie has come up with theme so get on to the blog and tell him what your suggestions are...

Tuesday
Tim green has suggested Towns, Cities and Villages as a theme. So if you have ever wanted to hear A Town Called Malice, Livin' In the City and The Village People then tonight is your night...

Wednesday
What are the most sensual songs of all time? Get it on with Get It On and let's hear the pop that leaves you panting...

Thursday
The World Pipe Band championships kick off this weekend so tonight's show is all about the pipes and drums. In the first hour we'll feature the best examples of the pipes in pop...and in the second hour, songs that have drum solos. Leave your suggestions on the blog or e-mail the show...

Hi all a couple of suggestions:

    Monday

Iggy Pops Version of China Girl, though I am a huge Bowie fan this version is way superior, though I suspect we might get the Bowie hit!

Kim Richey - Chinese Boxes from her fantastic new album

Joni Mitchell - Chinese Cafe - brilliant song.

Pete Thownsend - The Sea Refuses no River from his All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes lp

    Thursday

Its got to be the haunting use of bagpipes from Peter Gabriels Biko.

    Cheers

And in case someone beats me to it....

    Little Village - Van Morrison

We all have our view on Van especially in regard to his live shows but this is a fairly recent and absolutely tremendous track with Mick Green, formerly one of Johnny Kidd's Pirates!!, on guitar .

    Cheers

    Norrie

ps total aside but Joan Rivers at the fringe festival was really really good. Interesting lady!!

  • Comment number 5.

ppps Rezillos always welcome ~ Adam are they still absolutelly massive in brazil??

  • Comment number 6.

My earlier blog may have missed the point of the theme for Tuesday. Great tracks, well worth a play, but....

    Monday -

    China Grove - Dobbie Brother
Black Man Ray - China Crisis
Walking on the chinese wall - Philip Bailey

    Tuesday -

You could mention, but not play, the Bay City Rollers and the Village People

City to city - Gerry Rafferty
The Boy from New York City - The Darts
    Crescent City - Emmylou Harris
    NYC - Steve Earle

    Wednesday

J'ai deux amours - Madeleine Peyroux

    Thursday

    Copperhead Road - Steve Earle

  • Comment number 7.

Hong Kong Garden by Siouxie and the Banshees has got to feature somewhere on Monday.

For Tuesday, how about Cities by Talking Head's, maybe Summer in the City by The Lovin Spoonful, Theme of the Cities (?) by Simple Minds...

  • Comment number 8.

Monday: Sketches of China - Paul Kantner and Grace Slick (also named their daughter China )
Tuesday: Do You Want My Job 鈥 Little Village (鈥淚 take the cash so my kids can wear Adidas)
Baltimore 鈥 Randy Newman (now singing 鈥淭he rich get richer 鈥 I should know鈥)
Wednesday: I Want You 鈥 Elvis Costello (before he became important like Sting and Bono)
    Thursday: Pipes
Epic(No.38) 鈥 Grace Slick (Pipe Major Iain MacDonald Murray and his pals )
鈥淣o.鈥 is actually a hash symbol but it might crash the system.
    Party Doll 鈥 Mick Jagger
    Drums
The End 鈥 The Beatles (only Beatles drums recorded in stereo)
Diamonds 鈥 Jet Harris and Tony Meehan (who needs Hank?)

Am I alone in preferring toothache to Cerys Matthews?

  • Comment number 11.

Nearly forgot Marshall Haynes - Dancing in the city.

  • Comment number 12.

    For Monday's show - Ultravox/Hiroshima Mon Amour.

This was Ultravox at their best with John Foxx on vocals, before they became a pop parody with Midge Ure at the helm.

Unfortunatley the band will forever be remembered for the truly dreadful 'Vienna' and not good stuff like this.

    Cheers.

    Raymie in Consett.

P.S. The Rezillos big in Brazil? How bizarre!

OMG I am working at nights most of this week and I have to listen again I am in shock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have just heard that China Crisis were in Plockton in the 80s !!!!

I went to school there in the (early) 80s and I never saw them

I left in 1983 and moved to the metropolis of Inverness! I must have just missed them!

I loved them in the 80's

    PS Bryan
when I asked for the dancing in Kyle I was also at lots of dances in Plockton, and Dornie and Kintail (and my mum and dad always went to the ghillies ball in Kilillan -that was THE society west coast event of the year when I was a wee girl!
    oh happy days!

    Suzi, Inverness

but the Kyles ones were always the best!

  • Comment number 26.

For Tuesday's show how about 'It's Grim Up North' by The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu?

Surely there can't be a song with more towns, cities and villages listed than this. Can there?

    Cheers.

    Raymie in Consett.

P.S. Whatever happened to Bill Drummond?

  • Comment number 27.

I waited in vain for China Grove last night - but thanks for playing "Walking on the chinese wall".

Apologies for frequent posts. I'm sure it would be better for you to get one albeit long list...but my memory tends not to work that way (and like others I keep slipping into the trap of place names). A few more thoughts for tonight:

    Taneytown - Steve Earle
In The City - Joe Walsh
    Suffragette City - David Bowie
New Kid in Town - The Eagles
    Sin City - AC/DC
When love comes to town - U2/BB King.
Darkness on the edge of town - Springsteen

Also, I've heard of - but never found/heard - a Radiohead version of Blondie's Union City Blues. Is this an urban myth?

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 28.

Joe - its never been released though they have recorded this track and played it live. It has surfaced on bootlegs though.

I am sure it was recorded during the Pablo Honey sessions......but I'm not by any stretch that knbowledgeable on Radiohead so ready for the corrections!!!

  • Comment number 29.

    Tuesday

    Motorway City, Hawkwind
Kill City, Iggy Pop and James Williamson
    Sugar Town, Nancy Sinatra
Our Little Village, Paddy Roberts (check it out if you can!)
Cities on Flame (With Rock and Roll), Blue Oyster Cult

I had an ampersand after Iggy, so this is my fourth attempt!

  • Comment number 30.

For Tuesday what about Croy Hill by the late great Will Starr. A legend of the White Heather Club and a cousin of my father wrote this tune about his (and mine) home village. There are 3 Croys in Scotland one in Ayrshire, one near Inverness and this one between Cumbernaul and Kilsyth where I was brought up.

    Hi Bryan,

Hi Bryan and team, was busy with dinner earlier (homemade steak bridies in case you're wondering!) so here's our suggestions for tonight:

City of the dead - The Clash
    Dead Cities(not 2 cities) - Exploited
City Baby Attacked by Rats - GBH
    English Towns - The Stranglers
Sattelite - Sex Pistols (as in sattelite towns)
Dirty Old Town - The Pogues
Smalltown England - New Model Army

    That's our punky places playlist.

    Ta.

  • Comment number 33.

Hi all not sure that the Get It On with Get It On theme will be my best attempt but here are the ones that I like....

Thomas Dolby - I Scare Myself

kd Lang - Save Me or Wash Me Clean

    Prince - Cream

and I know I undertook not to nominate Brooooce this week but honestly even if you hate him this is really good and fits with theme

    Bruce Springsteen - Secret Garden

    Cheers everyone

    Norrie Maclean

  • Comment number 34.

Wednesday - a few Last Chance Saloon tunes

Please Stay - The Crying Shames
    Private Dancer - Tina Turner
Midnight at the Oasis - Maria McKee
Nights in White Satin - Moody Blues
Tonights the Night - Rod Stewart

  • Comment number 35.

    Wednesday: some GIOWGIO suggestions-

Roy Harper - Forever (from Valentine), going for a third appearance by the wrinkley lothario
Led Zeppelin - Gallows Pole (from Led Zep III). No comment on why this appears!
Nick Cave with PJ Harvey - Henry Lee. not so much for the song itself (which would be a bit - but only a bit - warped), but for the extent to which Nick and Polly were clearly "into" each other when recording the song and more so the video for it.

  • Comment number 36.

Wednesday - The Look of Love - Dusty Springfield. Still the best.
Oh and Roxy John - Glad to see the nickname stuck!!

  • Comment number 37.

Adam, thats a great track would love to hear that and Diana Krall does a wonderful version as well.

Cassandra Wilson does a fantastic and very sultry version of Time after Time

Dave Mason and Cass Elliot - Pleasing You has the lyric "get it on with you" which is appropriate!

    Cheers

    Norrie

  • Comment number 38.

Surely one of the most sensual tracks of all time is Syreeta's 'Your Kiss Is Sweet'.

A big hit from the 1970's (although rarely heard on the radio nowadays) its sure to get the goosebumps going.

Syreeta at one time was considered for Diana Ross's replacement in The Supremes and she was also married to Stevie Wonder (for 18 months).

    Cheers.

    Afternoon all

A few thoughts for tonight, which inexplicably have only just dawned on me:

    Thursday.
    .John Farnham 'You're The Voice'
got what sounds like pipes but it's probably the ex pat version of pipes.I suppose it could qualify for both themes as it's got a decent drum intro.

Joni Mitchel's The Jungle Line from 'Hissing Of Summer Lawns.
Adam Ant had a penchant for drums. In fact I think they pretended to play with two)but Ant Rap's is probably the best of a bad lot.
Finally,a classic.Wipe Out by The Surfaris.A Californian band of the surf music era circa 1962.This was the drum intro all us aspiring drummers tried to master.I never did!

  • Comment number 41.

I could not possibly explain why but Ruben Blades suddenly decided that a salsa / celtic fusin was where it was it in 2002 and his album feataures bagpipes and celtic sounds throughout, even a version of Danny Boy! Primogenio is the track that workd best on the album and is a real uplifting mix of panamian drums and bagpipes.

For straight bagpipes, possibly sampled, but used to brilliant effect I would love to hear Biko by Peter Gabriel . Really haunting track.

Sticking with Gabriel and though I am not a Phil Collins fan as such his drumming on Gabriels Intruder from Gabriel 3 is brilliant. Sets the scary tone for the song.

Finally, for now, about that Boney M reference in my earlier post. I am sure I had the nightflight to Venus album by Boney M and was sure that Cozey Powell played the drum intro to the lead track. I dont have the album anymore so not sure and it could have been a straight lift of his Dance ith The Devil or maybe an early sample? Anyway that would be bizarre to hear!

We got to have some Keith Moon! How about Daltreys tribute Under a Raging Moon as well which has at least 6 or 7 drummers including Stewart Copeland, Carl Palmer, Cozy Powell, Roger Taylor.

Been another great week of music!

    Cheers

Ron Wilson of The Surfaris has recorded a version of Louie Louie on bagpipes on Lost it in the Surf

  • Comment number 44.

    For Thursday's pipe theme...

How about Iona by The Skids from 1981.

Not usually what you'd expect from Dunfermline's finest but a stirring anthem none the less.

Plenty of pipes going on here as well.

    Cheers.

    Raymie in Consett.

  • Comment number 45.

Not sure you are really serious about doing an hour of drum solos tonight Bryan. I mean I cant really see you putting on Ian Paice's solo from Deep Purple's The Mule, but you never know.
There is a natty wee bit of drumming on Dire Straits' Twisting by the Pool which is maybe more in line with what you're thinking of.
Oh, and given the brouhaha about the vest last night, could we not have Male Undergarments as a theme?
    As The Real Thing sang,
"So now you've got the best of me
Come on and take the vest off me"

    Just a thought..

    Adam in Rio

  • Comment number 46.

    Pipes -
Something by Martyn Bennet would have to be included - Harry's in Heaven?
The Associates' Logan Time has a wee pipey outro
Roby Roy's Nightmare, the b-side of Wizzard's I Wish it could be Christmas Everyday

    Drums -
Lord save us from an hour of skin-bashing...
Kissing the Pink's Last Film depends heavily on its drum-riff (if there's such a thing), and is one of the great lost 80s tracks
Gary Gimore's Eyes by the Adverts builds up from a great tom intro
Wipeout by The Surfaris (NOT the Fat Boys), again loads of drums in it
Oh, go on then ... Moby Dick by Led Zep or Toad by Cream. Play them both and you'll have no show left!

  • Comment number 47.

One of the versions of "Driven By You" by Brian May featured the late, great Cozy Powell on drums. Any chance of hearing that or, alternatively, "Resurrection" by the same pair.

  • Comment number 48.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for playing Martyn Bennet's Chanter. The volume is up high, here in Rutherglen..this guy's music is awesome. I am rocking here just now!
