Off their trollies...

Bryan Burnett | 17:24 UK time, Thursday, 7 August 2008

trolley.jpgA huge response to last night's theme of 'things you'd find on the drinks trolley'. A top night for puns as well, so here are some of the best...
Lena Martell
Stevie Wonder - My Sherry Amour
Supertramp - Buckfast In America
Corrine Baileys Rae
He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother
Frankie Miller
Neil Diamond - Cracklin ¸é´Ç²õẻ
Amy Winehouse
Special mention must also go to Bob "not from Huntly" who suggested that we might have some minatures on the drinks trolley so perhaps we could play Tiny Tim or Little Jimmy Osmond!

Missed last night's show - what are the themes for next week?

  • Comment number 2.

China/Bagpipes and Drums/Towns,Cities and Villages and can't remember the fourth!!

Kinda guessing T'Pau's China In Your Hand will feature on Monday.

    Hi there,

    Here are next week's themes:

Monday 11th August: China in the first hour and Summer Mix in the second.

    Tuesday 12th August:
    Towns, Cities and Villages.

    Wednesday 13th August:
The most sensual songs of all time? Get it on with Get It On!

Thursday 14th August: Pipes and drums.

Hope that gives you food for thought over the weekend!

Tuesday - some Joan Baez would be good - Please come to Boston or Boulder to Birmingham. Or what about Eve of Destruction (I'm sure I don't need to say it talks about Selma, Alabama). Wednesday - Rapture by Anita Baker or just about anything by Lisa Stansfield, mebbe Tenderly. Thursday - No man's land by Eric Bogle.

  • Comment number 5.

On Wednesday I could Get it on with Get It On to Get It On by T-Rex (or The Power Station).

Don't know why I was so curious to find out next week's themes 'cos I'll be in France next week! On second thoughts, I'll bid for some Marvin Gaye or Al Green for Thursday anyway (doubt I'll be alone in that) - I'll listen again on the internet!

  • Comment number 7.

Oops! Meant Wednesday - not much in the way of pipes and drums on Marvin Gaye/Al Green records (to the best of my knowledge anyway).

  • Comment number 8.

I will take Mandi's advice by thinking over the weekend about the challenging themes set for the week ahead. However....

Walking on the chinese wall - Philip Bailey

China Grove - the Doobie Brothers (which could be played on Tuesday too as it is "a sleepy little town down around San Antone"). Has the same song ever been played on two consecutive nights?

I have another six (off-the-top of my head - honest!) suggestions for Tuesday:
    Greenville - Lucinda Williams
On a bus to St Cloud - Gretchen Peters
From Brighton Beach to Santa Monica - The Clientele
Paris - Tack, the boy disaster
New York State of Mind - but only the Billy Joel/Tony Bennet duet
Boulder to Birmingham or Crescent City - Emmylou Harris.

More to follow! Have a good weekend everyone.

Help! I have a Sparks song in my head and it won't quit. Can't remember the title, but the opening line is 'Albert is smart, he's a genius' Could songs about genii work as a theme?

  • Comment number 10.

    Hi SG

I think it is Talent Is an asset from the Kimono My House album? Still played by them, certainly until fairly recently!

  • Comment number 11.

    Lovely trolley!

  • Comment number 12.

Thank you Mr. MacLean! I just could not remember the titlle. It was bugging me all day and half the night. You think this will work as a theme? I would suggest Ian Dury's ' There ain't half been some clever b_st_rds ', but for an early evening show it's probably inappropriate.

  • Comment number 13.

    Hi - absoltely!

    David Bowie - Jean Genie(us)!!

  • Comment number 14.

Oh and Chocolate Genius - My Mom

  • Comment number 15.

Bon Voyage, Julie fae Embra. Don't get lost.

  • Comment number 16.

Scotch-git: Thanks, what a Bon(nie) idee though...I may just not come home!

    MONDAY CHINA

The original China Girl by cowriter Iggy Pop,
    China Dance Howard Jones,
China Crisis Temptation's Big Blue Eyes
Andy Mackay of Roxy Music The Loyang Tractor Factory from his album Resolving Contradictions inspired by a visit to China.

    TUESDAY Cities Towns And Villages
    Bryan Ferry's version of Carrickfergus
    Bryan Ferry New Town
    Bryan Ferry The Lambton Worm
or to cover every tom village and city Bryan Ferry's This Island Earth

Does Roxy Music's Virginia Plain count?
Virginia Plain was a painting Ferry did at art college in 1964. It was of a plain looking girl called Virginia standing with a packet of Virginia Plain cigarettes with the plains of Virginia in the background.

    WEDNESAY Sensual

Kate Bush The Sensual World and on the same album This Woman's Work
Roxy Music Avalon (one of my least favourite Roxy tracks)

    THURSDAY DRUM SOLOS

Roxy Music's Remake Remodel has 2 drum solos by the great Paul Thompson

  • Comment number 18.

Hi all - looks like Iggy is getting the Blog vote fgor the original and best version of China Girl!

Todays anorak fact is that the 12 INCH version of Sensual World was double grooved so depending on where you dropped the needle you got the normal or an instrumental version. Cant do that with a CD!

Now I know nobody needed to know that.....
