Bryan Burnett | 10:19 UK time, Friday, 19 September 2008

Monday 22nd September
Put your hands together as Vic Galloway sits in for Bryan Burnett and kicks off the week with 2 hours devoted to songs which feature clapping. David Bowie 'Golden Years', Queen 'Radio Ga Ga' or John Cougar Mellencamp with 'Jack & Diane'? - email your requests to getiton@bbc.co.uk or leave your suggestions on Bryan's Blog at www.bbc.co.uk/radioscotland.

Tuesday 23rd September
Today would have been Ray Charles' birthday so tonight Vic celebrates r'n'b and soul music across the decades.
It could be James Brown or Smokey Robinson, Etta James or Adele. You decide and email getiton@bbc.co.uk or text Vic on 80295.

Wednesday 24th September
Madmac fae Clydebank suggested tonight's theme - forms of address. It could be 'Lady Madonna', 'Me And Mrs Jones',
Duke Ellington or 'To Sir With Love'. Let's have your suggestions on Bryan's Blog at www.bbc.co.uk/radioscotland.

Thursday 25th September 2008
H20 dreamt of this, Faithless couldn't get any, and the Beastie Boys had none until Brooklyn.
Vic winds things down on the last show of the week with songs about sleep and dreaming.Email getiton@bbc.co.uk

    Struggling for Monday....

Tuesday - This old heart of mine - the Isley Brothers (an all-time favourite of mine)

Wednesday - apologies to all, I could not resist a list (any/all of which are well worth a play (if deemed appropriate to the theme)):

Marshall Hain - Dancing in the City
Kansas - Carry on my wayward son
    Isley Brothers - That lady
Dire Straits - Brothers in arms
Be Bop Deluxe - Maid in heaven
Wizzard - See my Baby Jive
Cats on Fire - I am the white-mantled King
    Queen - Killer Queen
The Blind Boys of Alabama - Way down in the hole
Joan as Police Woman - Holiday

    Thinking about Thursday...

    Have a good weekend.

  • Comment number 3.

    Words of Love - Beatles

    Big Bird - Eddie Floyd

Mr. Bad Example - Warren Zevon

I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night - Electric Prunes

  • Comment number 4.

EC! - brilliant choice - the Tamzin Archer one - think I'll just second that song for Thursday as I don't think I can think of anything on that theme I'd like to hear more.

  • Comment number 5.

Still to think of my (small but carefully crafted) lists for Mon,Tue and Wed but am putting in an early comment to remind folk that John Cougar/Mellencamp/Cougar Mellencamp has recorded other songs worth hearing apart from "Jack and Diane". "Hurts So Good", from the same album, has hand clapping in it I think.

  • Comment number 6.

Max B Gold makes Glen Miller bang right.

Eddie Floyd - Big Bird is an absolute classic and if it was the only record played during the whole show Max B Gold would not be concerned in the least.

  • Comment number 7.

Attention all Jethro Tull fans:- While Bryan is on vacation we can sneak in under the radar. Let us seize this opporchancity!

    Vic won't mind.
    Vic is a nice man.
Vic is a very nice man.
Vic is a very very nice man...............

  • Comment number 8.

    Monday

'Ring Out, Solstice Bells' - Jethro Tull

  • Comment number 9.

Its a bit Xmassy is it not Scottish Git?

    Monday
Close to Me - Cure (sounds like clapping if it isn't)

    Wednesday
Hey Lord Dont Ask Me Questions - Graham Parker and The Rumour
Yes Sir, I Can Boogie - Baccara (Though I cant imagine a gentleman would have asked the question "Excuse me, can you boogie?" even in the 70s. And has anybody else ever wondered what that "certain song" was, that she would only do said boogie to?)

    Thursday
Running Down A Dream - Tom Petty
In A Broken Dream - Python Lee Jackson

Adam in Rio (who isn't the slightest bit grumpy)

  • Comment number 10.

I prefer to think of it as Hogmanayish. Besides, given the theme my options are limited.

  • Comment number 11.

Hi Vic. For Monday (Clapping) I'd love you to play "Au Port" by the French singer Camille Dalmais, from her album "Le Fil". She regularly uses hand claps, as well as using her body and voice, to provide the percussion in her music which is great to listen to and fascinating to watch being performed.

  • Comment number 12.

Keep her talking - I'll get the telephone.

  • Comment number 13.

    Monday - Hand Claps

Hand Clapping Song - The Meters - funky hand clapping goodness!
    Peace Train - Cat Stevens
The Boy With The Arab Strap - Belle and Sebastian
We Used To Be Friends - The Dandy Warhols
    1234 - Feist

    Tuesday - R'n'B and Soul

Little Green Bag - George Baker Selection
Can I Get A Witness - Marvin Gaye (some wonderful hand claps here too!)
Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield
History Repeating - Propellerheads and Shirley Bassey

    Wednesday - Forms Of Address

    The Emperor's New Clothes - Sinead O'Connor
    Lady Midnight - Leonard Cohen
    Sad Professor - R.E.M.
Voodoo Lady - Ween - Vic, I thought you'd enjoy this suggestion!

    Thursday - Sleep/Dreams

Can't Get Out Of Bed - The Charlatans
Sleep On The Left Side - Cornershop
You On My Mind In My Sleep - Richard Ashcroft
Book Of Dreams - Suzanne Vega

  • Comment number 14.

    Morning all

Julie - listened to and enjoyed Au Port and a few tracks from the Camille CD, but I do have a weakness for french music (which my family encourage me to keep to myself).

    A few more suggestions:

Clapping - Get it on by T.Rex

    Sleep/Dreams

Suggestions for the intro-mix:Any Dream will do 9any version); Dreaming by Blondie; Dream by Fleetwood Mac; Dream a little dream of me by The Mamas and Papas

Have you seen in your dreams - Miracle Fortress
Shut your eyes - Snow Patrol
    Sleep - Texas
Dreaming of you - The Coral

Also - how about "Wake Up" by Arcade Fire for the last song!

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 15.

Camille Dalmais makes Cerys Matthews sound like Maria Callas.

Perhaps you francophiles can pick up Gate Eet Oan with Brianne Bournette on the internet.

  • Comment number 16.

Been busy on Google Joe Broon?

Camille Dalmais sounds like something you'd rub on a nettle sting.

  • Comment number 17.

    Hi all
For Monday clapping songs has to be Lambchop "Up with People". I was lucky enough to see this live at the South Bank a few years ago now with the guys from Calexico helping out with the clapping, it was a brilliant night and this was one of the amazing highlights.
Good luck this week Vic, I fear there could be some serious bribe offers and pleading coming in whilst BB is "en vacances"!
    Maria in Stirling

p.s. Please no Boo Radleys for the sleep theme!!

  • Comment number 18.

RoxyJohn - thought the Roxy Music Story was excellent it must be great to be involved in work by artists that you love. The guy who runs the Josh Ritter fan site has ended up doing some backing vocals on his last album! As an aside am I the only one who thinks Ferry was just about the only artsist not to use Live Aid as a way of plugging his back catalogue Sensation and Boys and Girls hardly being the big hits!

Sorry all....probably a discussion for another forum!

  • Comment number 19.

TUESDAY: King Curtis - "Memphis Soul Stew".

  • Comment number 20.

    Monday

    David Bowie - Golden Years
    David Bowie - Space Oddity
David Bowie - Secret Life of Arabia

  • Comment number 21.

Danielle - the Buzzcoks Harmony in My Head on Thursday were brilliant! Had to listen to second of of show on listen again as reception was lost on the A9 which was a pain, really enjoyed that and you have suggested a few crackers above I liked the 10,000 maniacs version of Peace Train but am not familiar with the original!

Anything by Richard Ashcroft welcome by me , I prefer his solo albums .

    Cheers

    Norrie MacLean

  • Comment number 22.

Dolly Parton also covered Peace Train. I love Dolly, but this one is a wee bit sugary.

Cerys Matthews is tres bon, even if she does have a Frog in her throat.

  • Comment number 23.

A French phoneticist has advised me that the correct pronunciation is Gay Tea Tone

  • Comment number 24.

I almost choked on my whiskey! (Not Scotch. I know how pedantic y'all can be).

  • Comment number 25.

Some folk aren't keen on Camille...tant pis. "Ta Douleur" from the same album as "Au Port" has even more clapping in it
    :-)

  • Comment number 26.

    Thanks Norrie!
Cat Stevens was another one I grew up listening to. Luckily I had an uncle who had floor to ceiling shelves of vinyl that he allowed me to play at will. I hold him completely responsible for my varied music taste today (although, I am now strangely drawn to those 'AM Gold' compilations!)
I'm thankful I was turned on to this show. It's like having that good homework assignment you always wished for in school and gives you a chance to rediscover old favourites. Looking forward to the coming week!

  • Comment number 27.

I have listened for the sound of clapping on Ta Doleur and believe you have mistyped a consonant.

  • Comment number 28.

Glenmiller - it's very annoying that you are really quite funny.

  • Comment number 29.

Julie his sharp wit is just making me feel sooo slow. Between that and trying to work out the puns!

Danielle is right about the good homework....any classroom competition creeping in with the bloggers do you think!!!?

  • Comment number 30.

I must have missed the point of school. I thought the words 'good' and 'homework' were mutually exclusive.

  • Comment number 31.

    Like 'happy' and 'marriage'

    But I'm not bitter.............................

  • Comment number 32.

Another one for Tuesday: some funky, Psychadelic Soul..."Showtime" by The Undisputed Truth, from the album "Smokin' - well worth a listen if you can find it.

  • Comment number 33.

Wednesday: "Your Honour" by Pluto Shervington.

  • Comment number 34.

Julie you must have the widest range of musical tatse and artists I've ever heard off! Seriously!

  • Comment number 35.

Or should I say not heard of!

  • Comment number 36.

Norrie...I just like what I like (since Bryan's away I'll admit to not being overly fond of that Morrissey chappie :-) )

  • Comment number 37.

Oh of course, but its great fun to look up your suggestions...one a few weeks ago was Betty LaVette who I had never heard of but is superb.

Sometimes I think my tatses are too conservative. But like you say you like who you like! And yup.....for me including Morrissey!

  • Comment number 38.

Contrasting accessories can lend interest to even the most conservative tatses. A colourful tie perhaps?

  • Comment number 39.

    LOL! I'll try it! Thanks!

    In the meantime Tuesday

Van Morrison or Ray Charles - I Believe To My Soul

    David Bowie - Soul Love

    David Bowie - Fascination

  • Comment number 40.

Julie, I am acting as "no Moz bashing" monitor while BB is away...your comments have been noted ;-)

    Maria

  • Comment number 41.

Maria...Noooooooo...Pleeeeease...Don't dob me in to BB...He'll never play any of my requests for Bing Crosby songs again
    :-)

  • Comment number 42.

Scottish Git - There is no e in whisky.
    Mr P. Dantic.

Norrie / Julie - You trying to get 100 posts on the Blog before Monday's show or what?

  • Comment number 43.

Ah, dear ole non-grumpy Adam...people keep talking to me and it's rude to ignore them. You'll notice however the lack of lists this week, so cut me some slack eh!

  • Comment number 44.

    Hello Julie

    bring the lists back!

I love checkin them out for choons i had forgotton about then serchin ro a download. LONG LIVE THE LISTINGS!

    kindest regards to all GIOers

  • Comment number 45.

    PS

Adam fae rio, theta whiskey wiz thon yankee type wi an E wiz it no!

  • Comment number 46.

    Adam,
The whiskey I favour comes from Tennessee,
I have to be a tad oblique, you see,
coz one cannae' advertise on the ´óÏó´«Ã½

Andrew Motion, eat your heart out!

  • Comment number 47.

Adam, if you carry on like this you won't get an invite from Barbara for the Xmas Party :-)

    Maria

  • Comment number 48.

For MADMAC's wednesday theme of forms of address the Thin White Duke again comes up trumps:

    Lady Stardust
    Queen Bitch
    Lady Grinning Soul
    Bhudda of Suburbia

Thursdays soporific suggestions from the Duke to follow....

  • Comment number 49.

Julie, you're getting your list in by stealth though!
Scottish Git, you dont consider bourbon whisky do you?
Hey Norrie Bowie, you trying to steal Roxy John's thunder?
Maria, I think have been off the producers' Xmas card list for a long time.

  • Comment number 50.

    MONDAY: THE CLAP

Looks like a diary entry I once had (kidding)

It must have been cold in Air Studios when Roxy Music recorded 'Stranded' as there are claps on both 'Mother Of Pearl' and 'Street Life'. Street Life had the added bonus of finger clicking too at the fade out

Norrie: the ´óÏó´«Ã½4 thingy came over well I thought and showed the importance and influence the band had and how indivudual they where.

    J.O'B.

    TUESDAY: SOUL

Sam And Daves Hold On I'M Coming (Covered by Ferry in 1978)

    WEDNESDAY: SIR/MADAM/Mr/Mrs

Got to be Roxy's 'Ladytron' how weird did they look on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1972. Not Many songs got rock oboe on them.

    THURSDAY: SLEEP

The day before BF's 63rd birthday and it seems my request for a Roxy related night is not on. It could have been fun as there are so many artists Ferry had coverd that the originals would have been part of the show as well as the people who have coverd Ferry/Roxy. Therefore it didn't have to be BF all night for those who couldn't stand the sound of what has been described as a voice like Edith Piaff riding a bike over cobbles.

For 'sleep' it has to be Simple Minds 'Big Sleep' I used to play this in one of the first bands I was in when I had more hair and less chins. And not to be stuck for a Roxy/Ferry track Bryan Ferry's 'Smoke Dreams' It was a left over track from his As Time Goes Buy album and was used on the Goddess Of Love CD single.

  • Comment number 51.

    The water of Life
    From the isle of Orknee
    Is the single that favours
    A townie like me

    The fire, the heat
    the aroma of peat
    The kick on the palate
    And the fairly sair heid!

    Top That McGonagle!

    C`mon the GIO malt teasers!

  • Comment number 52.

    Hi Vic,
Monday has to be The Clapping Song by Shirley Ellis.

Tuesday. With the current financial mayhem it's got to be Ray Charles 'Busted'.

Wednesday? How about Souxie And The Banshees 'Dear Prudence'.

Thursday Green Day.'Wake Me Up When September Ends'

    JTJM

  • Comment number 53.

Roxy John - unfortunate way to start a blog post. Brings tears to your eyes.

Up there with you Adam. Grumpy old men maybe but thought this was about tunes for a radio show not a chat room.

Was reaching for the sick bag a while back. Before you say it Maria, I'll no be looking for Producer Mandi's Christmas card either.

Here's a few more for Tuesday

    Think - Aretha Franklin
Chain of Fools - Aretha Franklin
    Superfly - Curtis mayfield
    Love Train - The O'Jays

  • Comment number 54.

    Hey EC

so you and AFR are now competing for the Victor Meldrew award?!
Back to the matters in hand......

For Tuesday night I would like to hear Aretha Franklin " I never loved a man"

I hope this conforms to the rules of blogging :-)

    Maria in Stirling

  • Comment number 55.

Bobby Blue Bland - Turn on Your Love Light

it was by covering this song Them were discovered and the rest etc etc

    Taking it full circle

Van Morrison and Bobby Blue Bland - Tupelo Honey, with Bobby wonderfully call Van "Son" in the middle of the recording.

  • Comment number 56.

    "I don't belieeeeeve it"

  • Comment number 57.

    Adam,
Sour mash whiskey is not a bourbon. That is a popular misconception.

  • Comment number 58.

Loved the hand clapping theme on Monday, that would be worth a re-run.

    Tuesday:Ben E King - Stand by Me

    Wednesday:UFO - Doctor Doctor

    Thursday:Aerosmith - Don't want to miss a thing

    My First post

  • Comment number 59.

    Tuesday

    'Harbor Lights' - Boz Scaggs

(This theme is not conducive to my mission).

  • Comment number 60.

Ou est le Brianne Bournette avec Gait Eat Own?

    Qui est Vicky Galway?

N'oublier pas Grand Oiseau de Eddie Floyd.

  • Comment number 61.

Êtes-vous sûr de ne pas préférer la version Jam Dig de la nouvelle génération.

EC ne seront pas heureux, je ne vais pas de nouveau poste pendant un certain temps et revenir à l'e-mail.

  • Comment number 62.

Max B Gold adds this just in case he forgets:

  • Comment number 63.

Excellent, it would indeed be great to hear this track (tribute to Otis Redding?), the Boss fan in me would also like to hear Raise Your Hand.

  • Comment number 64.

    Okay Vic-here's your chance....
for Tuesday's R 'n B songs..the hardly-ever-heard King Curtis cover of Whiter Shade of Pale (from the "Withnail and I" soundtrack) would be a treat....

  • Comment number 65.

Norrie - what are you doing next weekend I might need a translator in Paris.

"EC will not be happy I do not go post office during certain time once again and to come back e-mail"

  • Comment number 66.

Pah! I'm not giving up the day job.....It is a good track though hope iy gets played.

  • Comment number 67.

Welcome Garvockhill. Now remember the rules: no lists, no chitchat, don't slag-off ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Scotland sports presenters and do watch your spelling and grammar. Adam and EC will be watching ;-)

  • Comment number 68.

Ah... had a day off yesterday (a day off Get It On, that is, still had to turn up for work...)

Tuesday - Sly and the Family Stone "Dance to the Music", Aaron Neville "Hercules" (Vic, it would be good if you could find this, my tape of it has worn out!), Curtis Mayfield "Move On Up"

Wednesday - Vivian Stanshall - the whole of "Sir Henry at Rawlinson End" (maybe not room for it in a mere 2 hour show though)
Siouxsie and the Banshees "Oh Mein Papa / Mother"
Gene Chandler "Duke of Earl" (2 for 1 again!)
The Reverend Al Green "Let's Stay Together"

    Thursday
Bob Dylan "Motorpsycho Nightmare" or "Bob Dylan's 111th Dream"
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds "Henry's Dream"
Mama Cass "Dream a Little Dream"

  • Comment number 69.

rip snortin, heart breakin, soul searchin sort of set tonight. U cannae beat a bit of R`n`B heartache to cheer you up!

How about some damnfine 80`s R`n`B. Al Jarreau - black and blue or Luther Vandross - She Loves me back should fit the r`n`b chill bill!

Right, that me away back to the ironing. Rock `n` Roll!

    kindest regards

    Paul

  • Comment number 70.

    'Son' - Jethro Tull
    'Teacher' - Jethro Tull

  • Comment number 74.

    GardenPartyPaul,
I concede defeat. You are the better poet by far.

  • Comment number 75.

Anyone for a game of Cluedo? Got a Colonel Mustard dilemma here.

For tonight's show, don't know whether to suggest Mean Mr. Mustard by The Beatles or Terror Couple Kill Colonel by Bauhaus.

As Mean Mr. Mustard is part of the Abbey Road medley it's probably too long to play (but brilliant!) so it has to be a great single from Bauhaus for my suggestion.

    Cheers.

    Raymie in Consett.

  • Comment number 76.

    For Thursday

    Suicide - Dream Baby Dream

David Bowie - Moonage Daydream or the excellent early track Let Me Sleep Beside You and would suggest the Bowie at the Beeb version.

  • Comment number 77.

The Pleasure Barons are not often heard.

The Tom Jones medley from their Live In Las Vegas album is an amusing reminder of Country Dick Montana.

  • Comment number 78.

    For Thursday,the hardly-ever-heard Crowded House "Don't Dream It's Over "
and the truly rare 1973 Fleetwood Mac "Hypnotized"-from the Bob Welch era (does this make me a total music geek? Hope not.)

  • Comment number 79.

    For tomorrow

    Crass - Nagasaki Nightmare

  • Comment number 80.

For tomorrow the Long Ryders - I Had A Dream. There will be dancing in the Rue Doumbartonne.

  • Comment number 81.

    Julie

Still laughing at your last post.

Though I don't see myself getting too bent out of shape if anyone breaks the "rules".

Now what was it somebody famous said about "fooling some of the people".

  • Comment number 82.

Wednesday - What about a controversial one - God Save the Queen by the sex pistols - or is it still not allowed to be played on the ´óÏó´«Ã½?

    Stuart Glencross, Stirling

  • Comment number 83.

No, its ok Stuart. I heard it on another Beeb programme just last week. The Proclaimers, however, have been banned forever apparently.

  • Comment number 84.

Its a GIO bloggers lovefest this week. Hurray!

However a wee bit of list haters vitriol has its` place so please be prepared for the mother of all lists as prepared by............ oooooooh just like lighting blue touchpaper on november the 5th

Mr Scotchgit. Thank u for the kind words, You clearly had the same english teechur as me. Did u flunk the O livel tow?

  • Comment number 85.

Vic, you surprise me...never having heard of Pluto Shervington. If any Radio Scotland presenter was to know about him I'd have thought it would be you. I can usually rely on you to get a bit of reggae or ska etc. on the programme.

  • Comment number 86.

    GardenPartyPaul,
Didn't flunk exactly. Just didn't show up!

  • Comment number 87.

    Thursday

Boomtown Rats - When The Night Comes
Boomtown Rats - Late Last Night

    Lou Reed - The Bed

  • Comment number 88.

    Evening all

A bit of Pretenders for a Thursday never goes amiss...."I Go To Sleep" please Vic.

I am laying low for a while in case EC and AFR get too upset with the gentle teasing :)

Nearly Friday bloggers...I can almost taste the first glass of wine.

    Cheers!

    Maria in Stirling

  • Comment number 89.

Julie - Good shout with the Pluto Shervington track. You threw me for a bit cos I knew them as 'The Spirit Of Reggae' - Not all of his stuf is all that great (not a massive reggae fan) but 'Dat' is one I remember well as even charting in the UK. Lyrics are funny too!

Vic - dinnae fash yersel aboot nae kennin Pluto Shervington - I would challenge most people in the UK nowadays to have come across him - and you are young enough to be totally excused! LOL

  • Comment number 90.

Jim: "Your Honour" got to number 19 in the charts in 1982. It's not an outstanding track, just a pleasant enough, gently funny wee song. I wouldn't say he's the best reggae artist either, but the song title fitted the bill. "Dat" reached number 6 in the charts.

  • Comment number 91.

EC: I'm still wanting the Tamzin Archer track you suggested to be played tonight, and am resisting all urges to suggest further sleepy tracks (even something from System of a Downie) :-)

  • Comment number 92.

    Thursday

'The Waking Edge' - Jethro Tull

The dream theme is there in the lyrics.

  • Comment number 93.

I think Vic must have gone to The Brian Moore School Of Commentary before starting work on the radio. He certainly has that distinctive growl in his presentation.

    Adam in (rainy) Rio

  • Comment number 94.

Hi Vic, it's got to be Mama Cass Elliot to start the show, with Dream a Little Dream!
    Totally class song!
    Martin in (sunny) Dunfermline

  • Comment number 95.

And while I'm on, how about for next week's themes, something along the lines of "The Sun, The Moon, The Stars and The Planets" - that might even be spread over the 4 nights if you do some juggling!

    Martin in (still sunny) Dunfermline

  • Comment number 96.

...or Doris Day - Pillow Talk!

  • Comment number 97.

Harry, you beat me to it again!!

Nagasaki Nightmare was first on my list, what do you think the chances are?

Oh no, I have done that blog chat thing that certain grumpy old men have been complaining about. I only come here for the banter guys, even if I don't understand the French bits!!

Enough of this and on with my list:

    NAGASAKI NIGHTMARE - Crass
(No chance if Bryan was here!)

    Enter Sandman - Metallica
    (Ditto)
Let's Go To Bed - The Cure

Midnight Summer Dream - The Stranglers

    Dreaming City - Hawkwind
(We know you like Hawkwind Vic)

    The Dreaming - Kate Bush

    Dreamtime - The Cult

    Night night.

  • Comment number 98.

Sadly it is sport again on iPlayer. I guess I'll have to wait to see what next week's themes will be on the blog. I would love to get a head start on my homework...

  • Comment number 99.

You're back! Sorry for the excessive chat.

  • Comment number 100.
