Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 21:50 UK time, Friday, 3 October 2008

Here we go again then. Something to get you thinking over the weekend. I am having issues with Tuesday though. All week I have been thinking about what a great theme it was and now as I write this I can't think of a single track which fits the bill. Help!
rocklobster.jpgMonday
It's not only the Get It On team that are obsessed by food. It's a popular theme which has been suggested by Jan from Rutherglen, John in Shieldhall and Iain "Vinylman" Lyall. Strawberry Fields, Bread, Rock Lobster or The Jam? Leave your menu on the blog...

Tuesday

'No intros' is the theme for tonight. Let's have your suggestions of the songs that get straight down to business. E-mail getiton@bbc.co.uk or why not leave a comment on the blog?

Wednesday
U2 were at Number 1 this week in 1988 with 'Desire' and Neil Martin suggested 'emotions' as a theme. How about 'Don't Worry, Be Happy', 'Comfortably Numb' or 'Too Shy'? Leave a comment on the blog with your favourite songs of desire, anger, passion, joy and the rest...or email getiton@bbc.co.uk.

Thursday
It's time for another 'themeless Thursday' where it's open house on Get It On. Whatever you want to hear, for whatever reason, get in touch and get it on....

    Norrie,
I like John Prine, but I'm struggling.
I seek enlightenment, s'il vous plait.

  • Comment number 22.

    Hi Scotch,

On one of his live albums he tells of being asked to play Happy Enchilada by a girl in the audience, he says he does not know the song ,to her surprise as she claims he wrote it. How does it go ask John Prine and she sings "it's a happy enchilada and you think you're gonna die, thats the way that the world goes round"!

    Made me smile.....

That is a great Brett Anderson track, I see the album got pretty good reviews so must check that one out.

  • Comment number 23.

Maria - we better have some Cream by Prince to go with the flan!

  • Comment number 27.

Mayeb it's the hangover, but I'm sure I posted some stuff this morning and it doesnt seem to have registered. And I'm not sure I can remember all of what I posted! Anyway following on from previous post for Monday, how about Tuesday:
Sound of the Suburbs - The Members
Promised Land - Johnny Allan (best cover of thsi song, mental accordian, man appearing to eb singing sideways, all over in 1:59, sheer brilliance)

    Wednesday

Love and Affection - Joan Armatrading
Dimming of the Day - Richard and Lindsa Thomson

    Thursday:

Promised Land - Johhny Allan (I know, but it's just great)
Pressure Drop - Toots and the Maytals
    Pressure Drop - The Specials

Two versions of the same song, but we need this as our national anthem!

Now, time for more orange juice and fresh air and if this doesn't register I may start to feel paranoid again.

Oh Jim! to quote Lou Reed some of the people are going to be grumpy! Hee hee. Good for you, lists are best!

    Talking Heads - Stay Hungry

    Sparlehorse - Apple Bed

  • Comment number 35.

Can't really think of anything for food (and all the best suggestions have already been made, "Pump up the Volume" by Marrs prehaps or something by The Jam. Just thought of "Pumpkin Soup" by Kate Nash, though don't feel as if you have to play it.

Tuesday how about either "Forbidden City" by Electronic or "This Time of Night" (which might be cheating as it starts with a sample of the Journalist jeffrey Bernard saying "I am one of the few people who live whats called the low-life") by New Order.

  • Comment number 36.

frodofeetvegas - I'm proud of that list actually! I came up with it in about 25 minutes and only had to look up the Pluto Shervington one (running gag from when Vic did the show!)

I won't blog a list for Tuesday, though, as that will inevitably step on too many toes as it's a much harder theme if you are strict about the definition of it! I DO have a rather tasty list brewing though... But as yet, my keyboard is SEALED! ;-)

  • Comment number 37.

I was being sincere - it is a great list.

  • Comment number 38.

I usually don't think much of pastiches of particular bands or styles but I do think The Rutles (along with Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind) was spot-on.

Re lists ...we now know they're invaluable to the GIO team. I intend to post suggestions as and when I think of them and, this week, I've decided not to care who's nose I get up by so doing. :-)

  • Comment number 39.

Well Bryan - here's my menu for the day:

    Breakfast in Bed (Dusty Springfield)
    - Toast (Tori Amos) and Tupelo Honey (Van Morrison)
    - Orange Juice (Rip it Up)

    Lunch with Gina (Steely Dan)
    - Pumpkin Soup (Kate Nash)
    - Something from Camembert Electrique (Gong)

    Dinner at Eight (Rufus Wainright)
    - Gumbo Variations (Frank Zappa - maybe a bit indigestible for you since it's 17 minutes long!)
    - Country Pie ( Bob Dylan ) and Cowardly Custard (King Creosote)
    - A Small Fruit Song (Al Stewart - just 2 minutes!)
    - Black Coffee (kd lang)

After all that I'll probably be a Fat Man (Jethro Tull).

    Cheers

    Andy

  • Comment number 40.

    Tuesday

'For You' - Judie Tzuke - I never tire of hearing this song.

'Songs from the Wood' - Jethro Tull

  • Comment number 41.

    Monday

    Guacamole - Texas Tornados
She Don't Use Jelly - Flaming Lips

.....and a second for frodo's suggestion

    Stay Hungry - Talking Heads

  • Comment number 42.

For Monday's food programme, how about 'Lady Orange Peel' by The Attack.

This record is from 1968 and is sounding good in 2008.

    Should have been a hit.

Not sure how many people eat orange peel but I'm sure there must be some out there!

    Cheers.

    Raymie in Consett.

  • Comment number 43.

    Raymie,
The song refers to cellulite, not food.

  • Comment number 44.

    Food

I'll resist the temptation to quote a joke from The Broons (c. 1970). Well maybe not - "Donut Forsake Me, Oh My Darling" Frankie Laine.

Captain Beefheart (purely for the beef element) "Sure'nuff'n'Yes I Do"
Frank Zappa "Watermelon in Easter Hay" (it's an instrumental, Bryan - safe as milk!)
Gang of Four "Guns Before Butter"
    Pink Floyd "Apples and Oranges"

  • Comment number 45.

Hi to all the GIO bloggers, old and new.
Since food seems to be well and truly covered, my suggestions for No Intro Tuesday are -

    One Week, Barenaked Ladies
    Hanging on the Telephone, Blondie
    Cosmic Thing, B52's
    One Step Beyond, Madness
Tom's Diner (original) , Suzanne Vega
Two Tribes , Frankie Goes to Hollywood
    Oh L'amour, Erasure
Heavan is a Place on Earth, Belinda Carlisle

ConsettKebab, orange peel is in marmalade and you can also get candied peel in some posh chocolate shops. However eating lots of this could lead to 'orange peel legs' as Scotch-git points out!

    Cheers!

  • Comment number 46.

Another suggestion for Thursday and only because I ahven't heard it in over 20 odd years, have never been sure if I ever did like it, but it still wanders into my head every so often. It's Reperata and 'Shoes' which is about a wedding and I think mentions shoes once.

I suppose there is potential for a theme there, a sort of Can't Get You Out of MY Head, but it would have to be categorised as not a hit and also time barred eg nothing in the past 10 years, which may seem a bit extreme to our younger listeners.

  • Comment number 47.

    For tonight:

Take my Broth Away - Berlin
Kiss The Bridie - Elton John
Pizza My Heart - Janis Joplin
Always The Last To Know - Del Amitri (Justin Curry)
(Sittin' On) Ha'dock Of The Bay - Otis Redding
    Turnip On Again - Genesis
Theme From M*A*S*H (Suicide Is Painless) - MASH
    Eatin' Trifles - Jam

Plus anything by Meat Loaf or Smokie Robinson. Also, you could have some Marillion (singer Fish) followed by The Boomtown Rats (pianist Fingers).

  • Comment number 48.

Listen, a final word (from me) on the list thing. The only point I was trying to make (and EC too I think) was that sure, if you’ve got a list of songs you think would be good to hear on the show, then go ahead put them in. It was the Google generated lists that we were talking about. Just listing as many songs connected to the theme to see who’s got the biggest, (and you know who you are), we thought was a bit boring. I mean the GIO Team could make use of this valuable resource themselves if they were stuck.
But Hey! If the rest of you are happy with GG lists, then I’m cool with it too. Really.
    My nose is clear.

    Wednesday
Best of my Love - The Emotions
    Emotional Resue - Rolling Stones

  • Comment number 49.

Adam - I am probably best keep myself to myself but I agree with you - lists are good as long as the tracks are ones you would like to hear and especially its good if they are a wee bit off the radar as its actually quite interesting checking out some new people. Googling is wothless if you dont want to actually hear the song.

That said for some of the nighst I struggle for a couple of suggestions, for some you cvould go way OTT. Emotions for example is an absolute open goal.

I'll sneak in a further aplogy for the huff and one for tonight that I really should not have forgotten from my list of secret likes

Kid Creole and The Coconuts - No Fish Today

finally for now a good bit of trivia is that the Coconuts sang backing vocals on U2's war album!

    Cheers

  • Comment number 51.

Guys, you know what might be a great idea, especially as it seems to get everybody talking...

Why not have lists as an actual theme? Then we could have lists about lists! There are probably loads of songs such as:

    (and here's my list! LOL)
The List Goes On - The Ordinary Boys
Not Counting You - Garth Brooks
    Classified 1A - Cher
Days (Yellow Pages) - The Kinks
    Alphabet Street - Prince
    Timetable - Genesis
    My List - The Killers
Kiss On My List - Hall And Oates
Grown Up Christmas List - Barbara Streisand
Counting On You - Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers

...and probably loads more if you're inventive about constitutes a list!

  • Comment number 52.

...Just a wee afterthought for tonight's food theme:

    ROLL Over Beethoven by ELO

    ;-)

  • Comment number 53.

Jim - we have got to have that! Inspired!! I'm going to be listless until it happens.

  • Comment number 54.

Norrie - Give us some suggestions then, and maybe we can nconvince Bryan and the producers to get it on!

  • Comment number 55.

Stevie Wonder - Master Blaster (Jammin') just qualifies for tonight.

Also how about the Banana Splits theme tune. Well, they are coming back to a tv near you soon and I think many GIO's will remember the series...LOL

Tuesday's night's theme is a tough one but have come up with two possibilities:
Start me Up.Rolling Stones (may cause Windows programs to crash worldwide-a calculated risk.)
Hard-core Troubadour.Steve Earle (if you have to choose just one, Brian, please make it Steve Earle--ta.)

Hey Julie-well done, keep on runnig up those noses!

    Tuesday Night

Nae intro as such just big Vivian Stanshall ''........Hi, there nice to be with you, glad you could stick around, like to introduce Legs Larry Smith drums.....etc' and of course the whole of the next 3 minutes is an intro. Quality.

Great ironic song tae start the show with Bryan.

'The Intro and the Outro' - The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. (1967)

"Asylums in Jerusalem" - Scritti Politti (sorrow, hate)
"Bronco Bill's Lament" - Don McLean

Bryan, If you're looking for the original Banana Splits song, try searching for The Tra La La Song (I remember having The Banana Splits Annual...my favourite was Fleegle)

  • Comment number 66.

Meant to say Big Gordon Fae Leith: I'd also like to hear "The Intro And The Outro". I always liked Princess Anne on Sousaphone and, of course Val Doonican as himself.

  • Comment number 67.

    The Clash - Londons Burning

  • Comment number 68.

One or two of these have only one or two words before what might be considered an intro, so not sure how many are eligible:

    Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
You Give Love A Bad Name - Bon Jovi
We Built This City - Starship
Cum On Feel The Noize - Slade
    Hey Jude - The Beatles

Give Me Just A Little More Time - Chairmen Of The Board

I need to withdraw the Personal Jesus nomination as there is a tiny bit synth just before the vocals. Pity.

    So updated requests:

    Danny Wilson - Marys Prayer
Lloyd Cole and Commotions - Patience
Lloyd Cole and Commotions - Forest Fire
Del Amitri - Kiss This Thing Goodbye
Lyle Lovett - The Road to Ensanada
    Nanci Griffith - Ford Econoline
Kim Richey - I Will Follow
Gene Allison - You Can Make It If You Try
The Skids - Woman In Winter
Jackson Browne - Stunning Mystery Companion

Some great suggestions in previous blogs by everyone should be a great show!

    Cheers all

    Tuesday night's theme.

I would like to hear Life of Agony "Lost at 22" or Pearl Jam "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town"

    Debs from Giffnock

    Hi all

Great show last night for food themes.
    For Emotions;

"I Feel For You" by Chaka Khan..Brings back some great memories of 80's schooldays for me!

Or the fantastic "Happiness" by Goldfrapp...

    Maria in Stirling

p.s. Can we skip "Don't worry, be happy" on this one?!

    I believe Adam is correct.
But I'm not saying Mandi is wrong.

    (I'm crazy, not stupid).

    Tuesday

No intro to "Accidents Will Happen" by Elvis Costello from the album with possibly the most annoying cover in history. Try sliding that into your perfectly ordered and catalogued collection without tearing the foldy-down bits. Bloke thing, really.

    Q. - what is an intro? If absence of vocals over instrumentation then most of the Ramones' songs would do it. If "1-2-3-4" is an intro then their "Pinhead" goes straight into an important motif "Gabba gabba we accept you, etc", which recurrs within the song and therefore can't really be classed as an intro. Either way, Ramones or Big El, Get It On (and no more of your Meatloaf nonsense, guys).

    THURSDAY:

"Woman" or "Kootchi"(brilliant track although maybe a wee bit suggestive for teatime) by Neneh Cherry.

"Down at the Twist and Shout" - Mary Chapin Carpenter.

"Patience of Angels" - Eddi Reader.

    Weak" - Skunk Anansie.

  • Comment number 75.

Good shourt for "Weak" Julie! I second that :-)

  • Comment number 76.

Thanks Maria. I forgot to request something by The Tubes - "Don't Want To Wait Anymore" or "Prime Time". I also wonder if anyone can think what punk (?) single (late 70s) started with pleading something like "I don't wanna go to room 101"? Punk Dad...are you still there?

  • Comment number 77.

good show last night Brian everybody needs food, interesting theme tonight.
I can only think of American Pie-Don McLean for tonight.

    Gordon Christie

  • Comment number 78.

I'll go with The Tubes for Thursday. Either of those two suggestions.

Oh aye. Is it just me or is Barbara's laughing and giggling not just the best thing on the radio?

  • Comment number 79.

    Barbara's giggling is very cheery-uppy :-)

  • Comment number 80.

Adam, you are so right. Barbara laughing and giggling has (to paraphrase) launched a thousand fantasies. Maybe we could have a theme night of Barbara laughing / giggling interspersed with the odd song.

  • Comment number 81.

    Steady Hoppo steady!!

  • Comment number 82.

May I stress that Barbara's giggling does not cause me to fantasise! Perhaps a night of tracks containing laughter would be fun. I don't mean songs like The Laughing Policeman but the more subdued chuckling during tracks.

  • Comment number 83.

    Weds show

'Personality Crisis' by the New York Dolls,

    pretty please !

  • Comment number 85.

Barbara's giggle should be made into a jingle so Bryan can use it on the nights she's not on - ala Tony Blackburn and Arnold.

    JulieFromEdinburgh -

There is a web forum page that lists 100 songs with laughing women in them! However I can't post the URL here because it has an ampersand in it! AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

Just google the phrase '100 songs with laughing women' and you should be able to find it. Quite a few great tracks for your theme suggestion there.

    " " version girl.
the enemy away from here.( my favourite song of the year )

  • Comment number 88.

bill withers " aint no sunshine " sounds like a song for tuesdays theme ,but i can't check it.

  • Comment number 89.

Last night's food show was great. Interesting to hear what everyone was cooking as well.
Tuesday no intros is a tricky one but a few possibilities below.

"My Tennessee Mountain Home" - Dolly Parton
"Make It Easy On Yourself" - Dionne Warwick
"She Loves You" - The Beatles
"That's Not Me" - The Beach Boys

I'm looking forward to hearing what everyone else comes up with. By the way it's Morrocan Lamb tonight.

    No intros night again -

I Useta Lover by The Saw Doctors

    Maria #12

I'm still here but the fat lady is winding up with a chorus of my favourite song so for how long I don't know.

Pleased to see that Norrie found all of his toys and climbed back into his pram, along with his trusty keyboard.

Knew the GOM comment on the lists would die a natural death and it was a bit like sticking a "Wet Paint" sign on a park bench. Nobody can walk past without touching it to see if it really is wet and the flurry of lists post the comments of AFR and me just goes to prove the theory.

That said, looking at this weeks first few blogs there are no tunes left for the rest of the week. That'll teach me to go off enjoying myself in Paris over the weekend.

Wonder who PM will pick on now?

  • Comment number 93.

    Hey EC
You're back! normal service is resumed :-)
I love the fact that all the hoo-ha about lists seems to have encuraged more listeners to blog! Human nature eh?
It is great having lovely newcomers joining in our light hearted banter and friendly teasing.....

    Hi Brian
Love the show and got a menshi tonight for the first time.Requested Fats Domino / Blue Monday for the no intro but
didn't get picked.Anyway lets try again for emmotions(blue ????) and can we roll it into your suggestion for another category ie, songs where the first line contains the title.I think it covers all three which must be worth a play.

  • Comment number 97.

Hi EC hope you had a good break. Keyboard in working order I am pleased to report and just about have all my toys relocated.

    Wed:

    Emotional Rescue - The Stones
    Sorrrow - David Bowie
Your Going To Make Me Lonesome When You Go - Dylan
Fountain of Sorrow - Jackson Browne
Passionate Kisses - MCC or Lucinda williams
I'll Take My Sorrow Straight - Iris DeMent
    Greedy - Boo Hewerdine
Not So Sentimental Now - Justin Currie
Do You Know How It Feels To Be Lonesome - International Submarine Band

  • Comment number 98.

I have had my cold shower this morning re my earlier comments on Barbara's giggling, it is great though. Unfortunatly work intervened yesterday and I only caught the last 20mins or so of the show. I tend towards the vocals can be an intro as much as music and there were one or two I heard that I would have excluded, like 'Fat Bottomed Girls', but cie la vie. Hopefully timing will work out better tonight. As for tonight's them a few more thoughts:

I'll be the other woman - The Soul Children or Betty Wright
I Hear it through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye
Tracks of My Tears or Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson

  • Comment number 99.

    Emotions:

Happy Together - The Turtles (and you get a silver star if you play them - Flo and Eddy - singing it when they played with Frank Zappa, but be careful if you are taking it from Live at Fillmore East!)

I Second That Emotion - Japan (or Smokey Robinson)

    Happy Mondays - Step On

Blue - Lucinda Williams (a truly beautiful song)

    Or Cream - CROSSroads

  • Comment number 100.

HoppoLocus what about Tracks of My Teras but the Big Country version, that would be great to hear!

Hope your day goes well and you her all the show tonight! I missed last nights and probably tonights too (on account of the economy as Mr Springsteen once sang) but hopefully will catch up at the weekend!
