Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:44 UK time, Thursday, 16 October 2008

I'm putting the themes up early this week as I'm off to Amsterdam for the weekend to run the marathon. I suspect I might be the first Scottish bloke to go to Amsterdam and not drink beer or eat chips and mayonnaise...well at least till the marathon's over.
It's been a great response on the blog so far so let's hope as many folk log on and start posting suggestions for this week.

BTW, all the themes this week have been suggested by GIO regulars so don't be shy about submitting your theme ideas...

Monday 20th October:
Valerie in Shetland has suggested a positive and negative theme to kick off. It's songs with 'yes' and songs with 'no' in them, or maybe both! So we could play McAlmont & Butler 'Yes', Amy Winehouse 'Rehab', Midge Ure 'No Regrets' or Baccara 'Yes Sir, I Can Boogie'. We will also accept the odd yeah or naw but definitely not maybe!

Tuesday 21st October:
Leaving On A Jet Plane, BA Robertson or perhaps something from Pilot? Flying is the theme, as suggested by Joe in Linlithgow. If you would like to contribute to the in-flight entertainment then get posting...

Wednesday 22nd October:
The car door on 'Love Is The Drug', the siren on 'Two Tribes' or the horses' hooves on 'Stand and Deliver'. Sound effects on pop records is the theme and it's been suggested by John in Shieldhall. Call or text during the show or leave a comment on the blog...

Thursday 23rd October:
Vic Galloway sits in for me tonight and will surely have on eye on the clock. That's because tonight's theme is time, suggested by Gordy. Do you want to hear Gene Pitney 'Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa', The Beautiful South 'A Minute's Silence' or maybe Culture Club with 'Time (Clock Of The Heart)'? E-mail getiton@bbc.co.uk and get ready to rock around the clock...

    Mandi, Babs
Will Uncle Vic consider requests for Jethro Tull on Thursday, or should we ask if Bob Harris is available?

  • Comment number 2.

    Kirsty,
You can't go wrong with Prokofiev.

Is an MP3 a type of car?

  • Comment number 3.

Hey Adam over 200 posts last time out - pretty grim. I warned earleir in the week about all the chatting and being nice to each other. Obviously my warnings fell on deaf ears.

This week I am going to be the champion of 2 or 3 tracks suggested for each show.

    Honest.......

  • Comment number 4.

Nobody told me you could get beer, chips and mayonnaise in Amsterdam. What a wasted trip.

  • Comment number 5.

Hey glen - if all you get on a trip to Amsterdam is beer, chips and mayo, you are a lucky boy...

  • Comment number 6.

    MONDAY:

"Be Good Johnny" by Men at Work includes a few "nah"s.

"No Dry Ice or Flying Pigs" - A dig at stadium bands like Pink Floyd and Queen by The Leighton Buzzards (who later became Modern Romance).

"Accentuate The Positive (Eliminate the Negative) - Bing Crosby.

"Let Your Yeah Be Yeah" - Jimmy Cliff.

  • Comment number 7.

    TUESDAY:

Bryan: Hope you can dig out that old tape you have of the theme song to "The High Life" by Alan Cumming and Forbes Masson...Cumming's character was even called Sebastian Flight (not as good a name as (Mussolini in micromesh) Shona Spurtle though). Surely one of the funniest TV series ever made.

  • Comment number 8.

Tuesday must feature something from The Byrds, mebbe 8 miles high (tho something tells me this was mental or chemical flying). Expecting to Fly from the Buffalo Springfield would be good, or Birds by Neil Young. And possibly Drop the Pilot from Joan Armatrading? Or I'm Raving by Scooter (Put on my raving shoes and I boarded a plane. Touched down in the land where the skies were blue, in the middle of the pouring rain.)

  • Comment number 9.

8 Miles High would be great. I also thought the Roxy cover was excellent.

I would love to hear a track by Will Oldham which I just cannot track down called One With the Birds, I have a live cover version by David Gray and when I have seen him perform it I think it is a great track - but I have never heard the original.

    Norrie, Renfrew

  • Comment number 28.

    joe-k-brown,
I've been told when Joni Mitchell sings 'This Flight Tonight' on stage she introduces it as a Nazareth song.
    How cool is that?

  • Comment number 29.

However cool it is - Manny Charlton ws an old pal of my cousin who was lead guitarist in Streetheart in Canada - massive stadium rock group over there. They are still going strong in the current 'revival' stuff going the rounds. Jini's and Naz'z are both great tracks!

Big up the Scots bands, I say!

    Vic?

  • Comment number 30.

Obviously I meant it to be Jini.

  • Comment number 31.

Monday - No Limits, 2 Unlimited.
    Sorry, couldn't resist

Tuesday - Learn to Fly, Foo Fighters
Any FF song would fit as the band is named after a type of UFO

    Wednesday - Club Tropicana, Wham
    (I've no shame)

Thursday - 5am in Amsterdam, Michelle Shocked.

Scotch G, I remember Peter and the Wolf from school music lessons but had forgotten how good it was. Thanks for the tip :)

  • Comment number 32.

    Kirsty,
The clarinet representing the cat always makes me smile.

Check out the Lieutenant Kije Suite and his Classical Symphony (No.1)

  • Comment number 33.

Morning all! Imagine saltspringsherri encouraging me! Some great selections above and The Flyer by Nanci is a great track Joe, what about Outbound Plane by her as well. Also Long Time Comin' by Springsteen?

Could I make an appeal for nothing by the Blue Aeroplanes!! Truly one of the worst bands I have ever seen we only went to see the Boo Hewerdine and Neil McColl band The Bible supporting. However I remain scarred by the dancer so maybe the music was not that bad! Someone will let me know!

    Cheers

    Norrie

  • Comment number 34.

Norrie - I had never heard of the Blue Aeroplanes! Unfortunately I now have...

  • Comment number 35.

JimfraeErskine you beat me to it requesting Martyn Bennett's Nae Regrets. A great track about a child who no longer wishes to stay with their granny who sells illegal booze up the close. Starts quietly building to heavy beats and brilliant sound, simply superb! and its sung in Scots.

Ah'll no bide wi ma granny nae mair
Ah'll no bide wi ma granny nae mair
She skelps ma face and she pulls aa ma hair
an ah'll no bide wae ma granny nae mair

Ah'll awa hame tae ma mither, ah wull
Ah'll awa hame tae ma mither, ah wull

She keeps a wee shop at the tap o the ha'
And she sells a wee drappy at sixpence a shot

No, no regrets. No, no regrets

  • Comment number 36.

Yeah I do think Nae Regrets would be a brilliant choice for Monday - remember the response last time a Bennett track was played on the show? Fantastic man and great music. A friend of mine worked with him and was involved in the tribute concert after MB died. By all accounts a really nice guy and a superbly talented musician.

  • Comment number 37.

    MONDAY

'Ain't No Good Life' - Lynyrd Skynyrd

For Ronnie Van Zant, who went to heaven on Thursday, 20.10.1977

    Gone, but not forgotten.

  • Comment number 38.

Scotch - Another great Lynyrd Skynyrd shout would be Freebird, for Tuesday's flying theme.

  • Comment number 39.

    Jim,
I'm not so sure. The theme is flying, after all. Not crashing.
    Having said that;

    TUESDAY

    'Clockwork Creep' - 10cc

(The lyrics refer to a plane).

  • Comment number 40.

    EC, have you abandoned us?!

    Maria in Stirling

p.s. away down south again so will see you all next week!

  • Comment number 41.

    Jim,
Apologies for being so offhand. Freebird is a great shout, but maybe the timing is inappropriate. Which makes me a hypocrite for requesting 10cc
How did I get myself into this hole?!?

  • Comment number 42.

On Tuesday night's flight plan I would love to hear Mary Hopkin The Sparrow.
It was on the b-side of her single Goodbye.
A simply beautiful tune and sung with
the voice of a angel. I remember playing it over and over again as a young child watching the Apple label spin round.

  • Comment number 43.

Hoppolocus great shout for Leader of the Pack - Shangri La's. It's on my list also.

  • Comment number 44.

Scotch - I think as long as the music is great that's all that matters. Freebird is a superb track and fits the bill nicely. It was perhaps the Tops' best ever hit and would grace any playlist.

  • Comment number 45.

Jan From Ruglin - did't you get dizzy doing that?

  • Comment number 46.

    Wednesday 22nd October:

The Sweet's Blockbuster has a siren on it.

  • Comment number 47.

    2 Clash songs have sirens

    White Riot

The Call Up - great track with sirens and marcjing boot effects

  • Comment number 48.

JimFraeErskine - yes I did get dizzy watching the apple spin! Probably explains why I am still dizzy today...LOL

  • Comment number 49.

    I usually dook for mine...

  • Comment number 50.

Tuesday - I have a fairly long list of great tracks - so I better email that in! In the meantime....

Flying Burrito Brothers – Wild Horses
Black (Colin Vearncombe) with Sam Young - Fly Up To The Moon
    Steven Lindsay - Birdsong

Hope everyone had a great weekend and I aplogise for ruining Jim's!

  • Comment number 51.

    Jim,
You are, of course, correct. I'm just being a twanger.
I need someone to blame, however, and I nominate Uncle Vic. He can redeem himself by playing some Tull on Thursday.

  • Comment number 52.

    The Tops???

  • Comment number 53.

    See 44

  • Comment number 54.

Great suggestions above - Freebird and Outbound Plane were on my first (and sadly longer) list. I'm hoping BB might play Cado Belle or Kim Richey, but ....

SG - the Nazareth version is my better half's favourite!

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 55.

Joe - Cado Belle? Dont know that name at all. Kim Richey always welcome IMO.

  • Comment number 56.

Maria - Never mind EC, its Roxy John I'm worried about. Where has he gone? Our only celeb blogger.
Oh, and btw, do you not have access to a computer down south?

  • Comment number 57.

Re blog no. 44 I was of course referring to The Four Tops!

  • Comment number 58.

Norrie - it's OK I have heard worse but won't introduce it to the world here! LOL

  • Comment number 59.

Before I forget for sound effects

The Jam - Down In The Tube Station At Midnight

  • Comment number 60.

    Norrie

Cado Belle formed in October 1974 and consisted of six members: Alan Darby on guitar, Gavin Hodgson on bass, Stuart MacKillop on keyboards, Maggie Reilly on vocals, Davy Roy on drums and Colin Tully on saxophone and flute.
Their only LP, entitled simply Cado Belle, was released in 1976.
Cado Belle split up in 1979.

    Nostalgia!

"People Funny Boy" by Lee "Scratch" Perry includes the sound of a baby hiccuping and crying and is thought to be the first reaggae single to be recorded.

Sure Jimmy Lindsay's reggae version of The Commodores "Easy" has a telephone in it but best check.

  • Comment number 66.

    THURSDAY:

    "5:15" - The Who

    Forgot for Wednesday:

  • Comment number 67.

Hi Joe - looked it up on the internet and I see the Cd transfer is roundly slated so I have ordered the lp on ebay. Not cheap which is always a good sign! I will let you know what I think!

Yes - America (but go for the much shorter single version rather than the overblown album - or live - version)

  • Comment number 69.

Some great suggestions for Monday appearing & I would definitely like to add my voice to those asking for Martyn Bennet's "Nae Regrets". I'd also add these suggestions

No Woman No Cry – Bob Marley
    No Diggity – Blackstreet
No Sympathy – Super Furry Animals

I suppose it's unavoidable but the best thing would be no Yes, please.

  • Comment number 70.

    Peter Gabriel No Self Control

Sex Pistols No One Is Innocent

Duane Eddy and The Rebels - Yep

  • Comment number 71.

Can I second RJ's suggestion for Sign of The Times. Great lead single off a superb album. Ah singles the way they used to be - less than 3 minutes and with a proper b-side.

    Bermuda Triangle Blues- Blondie

For Tuesday how about 'Winterlight' by Clearlake from 2001? It was the band's first single and includes the lyrics..."look up into the sky and you can see the sun reflecting off the body of an aeroplane."

    Cheers.

Scottish Git - Good shout on Yellow Dog, not heard that for a while.

  • Comment number 81.

    jim frae erskine

Yes, yes, yes to Flying down to Rio.

Or how about a choice of Nanci Griffiths tracks:
    The Flyer; or
    Three Flights Up (!!!)

  • Comment number 82.

    Flying :

    BA Roberston - Bang Bang
Drop The Pilot - Joan Armatrading
One Day I'll Fly Away - Randy Crawford
    Airport - The Motors
Fly Me To The Moon - Frank Sinatra

  • Comment number 83.

Andy - flights of course! How about 20 flight rock by Eddie Cochrane. lloyd Cole and the commotions - Four Flights Up.

Great Nanci track, the flyer, I think a few of us have suggested that now so hopefully it will be on.

Hope you are surviving these M77 jams - brutal!

Jan - The Butterfly Collector is a great shout and one of the all time great b-sides!

  • Comment number 84.

    Tuesday

    Robert Calvert managed a whole concept album on the subject of dodgy US 'planes "Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters". Either "Ejection" or "Aero Space Age Inferno" from it would do;
    Arlo Guthrie "Coming in to Los Angeles" (airport);
    The Motors "Airport";
    Hawklords "Freefall".

  • Comment number 85.

    TUESDAY:

10CC - "I'm Mandy Fly Me", which I've not heard for a while. I know that 10cc went through a lengthy phase of being unpopular but i think the album "How Dare You" is great. Have a feeling that track also contains sound effects so could fit for Wednesday's theme too.

    WEDNESDAY:

The track "Vegetables" by The Beach Boys seemingly features vegetable-chewing as percussion. I've never heard it - anyone know if it's worth an airing?

  • Comment number 86.

Nothing by the Beach Boys is worth an airing.

How about OMD and Enola Gay instead.

    Hello!

I'm new to this blog. I listen to the show every night whilst walking my dog. I like it when Bryan and Barbara talk about soup.

I have some suggestions for this week:

    Tuesday

"Flying Sorcery" by Al Stewart. It's a great about the pioneering English aviatrix Amy Johnson. YOu can tell that Al really took his time honing the lyrics.

I would appreciate it if you DO NOT play "Fly Away" by Lenny Kravitz as it has really, really bad lyrics. "I wish that I could fly/Into the sky/So very high/Just like a dragonfly". I saw a dragonfly once, it was flying about one meter off the ground.

    Wed

"The Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkel

Apparently the loud drum noise in the chorus was made by banging a heavy chain against the concrete floor of a big empty cupboard.

    Thur

"Time of the Season" by the Zombies

    Regards
    Mr Chops, The Dwarf

She's down south and cant get to a computer, otherwise I'm sure Maria would be asking to hear Captain Tobias Wilcock on flight 372 tonight.

By the way - Mr Chops, the Dwarf is an anagram of EC in de Norf Sea.

EC in de Norf Sea has considerably more e's than Mr Chops the Dwarf.

When would something be classed as a sound effect rather than the use of an object as an unconventional musical instrument? Discuss :-)

I have a vinyl LP called "Barbra Streisand and Other Musical Instruments". It includes a song featuring the likes of kettles, blenders etc. as musical instruments. Fortunately perhaps, I can't listen to it as I have no turntable but, because of the theme, I do wonder what it sounded like - think the track was "The World is a Concerto". :-)

Thanks for asking about the M77 - not too bad, to be honest (and a lot better than before it was built and the road came down from three lanes to one at Newton Mearns - and a lot better than before GIO started!).

My tag was chosen when Bryan had only an hour and this matched (exactly) my journey home. And it was too long to say andy_driving_through_the_southside_thenthe_M77_then_the_A77_then the B7592....and so on!

    Wednesday

Sorry, I can't resist a list, though it may well be in several parts whenever I can grab the time:

    Todd Rundgren "Onomatopeia", a nice wee track from "Hermit of Mink Hollow" lp, featuring lots of onomatopaeic words followed by the relevant sound-effect (honk, hiccup, drip, slurp being just some of them);
    Splodgenessabounds - either track from the other side of "2 pints, etc", car door, footsteps on "Simon Templar", and on "Michael Booth's Talking Bum" - well, you just have to use your imagination. Given BB's toilet fixation recently, it might be in with a shout?;
    Sham 69 "Borstal Breakout" - breaking glass and Cockney neo-Chavs;
The Revillos "Motorbike Beat" - again, little or no imagination required.

Oh Adam Adam Adam - I can recycle old Shamen jokes till the cows come home.

Hey Harry - are you some kind of Ellery or something? You've just about pinched half my sound effects list!

I know they do have Michael Booth's Talking Bum on the system because it was played on one of Vic's Friday night shows some weeks back... It would be a good shout - and the swearword at the end has already been bleeped out!

    Sound Effects:
Unusual - Roger Ruskin Spear (Bonzo Dog SFX madness but a really great song)
Onomatopoeia - Todd Rundgren (loads of sounds and words that describe them)
Autobahn - Kraftwerk (cars on the motorway)
Flash Gordon - Queen (lasers blasts going off)
Telephone Line - Electric Light Orchestra (telephone ringing at the start)
Blockbuster - The Sweet (keyboards sounding like police sirens)
Yellow Submarine - The Beatles (mechanical sounds from the submarine)
Caroline No - The Beach Boys (animals and a train are heard at the end)
Five Miles Out - Mike Oldfield (guitar sounding like a plane flying in the fade-out)
Cuckoo Song - Mike Oldfield (recorders sounding like a cuckoo)
Simon Templer - Splodgenessabounds (Simon Templer's car and running sounds)
    Chainsaw - The Ramones (guess!)
Plates and saucers - The Acorn (guess!)
Nice 'n' Sleazy - The Stranglers (weird keyboard solo/noise effect)
The Harsh Truth Of The Camera Eye - Morrissey (cameras clicking)

Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band - "Tubas in the Moonlight" - mentions twighlight and is a lovely, silly little ditty :-)

Hey people-can we get a few more requests for Steve Miller's Fly Like an Eagle so it actually gets played tonight??That would be good, as BB often says.

    More ideas:
Tom Russell Blue Wing (beautiful and rarely heard)
    Townes van Zandt Flying Shoes
    Tom Petty Learning to Fly

And please avoid Take Me to the Pilot (Elton John)--truly horrid
