Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 08:35 UK time, Friday, 24 October 2008

Next week's themes are now up and running so don't be shy about getting your suggestions in. I think occupations night will be good fun especially for those with fairly unusual jobs. I'm also looking forward to Monday night's 1st singles show although most of the folk I've talked to seem to have two - the one you admit to and the one that you really bought but are far too ashamed to admit to. Feel free to send me both.
label.jpgMon:
Some were cool, most were cringeworthy, but we all had one....'the first single you ever bought' is the theme for tonight. Confess all on the email or if you really feel like going public then leave a comment on the blog...
Tue:
Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover, We Didn't Start The Fire or even This Ole House. Tonight's theme is 'songs with lists in them'. Jim from Erskine suggested this on the blog a few weeks back so I am expecting an extra long one from him to kick us off.Send an email with your suggestions or call and text during the show...
Wed:
Occupations is tonight's theme....but there is a twist! It has to be a song about YOUR occupation. Don't even think about suggesting Hang The DJ. Let's hear about your Career Opportunities by e-mail, call or text...
Thurs:
Let's get ready for Halloween with a night of Goths, ghosts and ghouls. Jan from Rutherglen suggested this and Moira Harkins has been pleading for a night on the 'dark side'. Email your spooky sounds to getiton@bbc..co.uk or leave a comment on the blog...

    Morning all

These themes seem designed to deter long lists!

    Mon - First Single
Sorry - I don't remember the first single I bought even although I have very few...I tended to buy the album back then. The first record I bought (from 23rd Precint in Baths Street in Glasgow) was Relics by Pink Floyd. It has not aged well! I suggest: Arnold Layne or (the apt) Remember a Day.

    Tuesday ...still checking my list!

    Wednesday -Occupations
I'm a civil servant.. and I'm really struggling to think of appropriate songs. How about:
    - the theme from Yes Minister
    - I'll work for your love (Springsteen)
    - Everybody wants to rule the world (Tears for Fears)
Blessed (Brett Anderson) - because the civil service provides a fabulously varied, interesting and rewarding career.

    Thusday - Ghosts etc
The ghost of Tom Joad (Springsteen)

    Have a good weekend.

Just thought of another appropriate song for Wednesday...

From small things (big things one day come) - Springsteen.

  • Comment number 3.

Can't remember which was bought first but the first singles I bought, all at the same time I seem to remember, were:

"Meet Me On The Corner" by Lindisfarne - think I've already had that played so...my others were:

"I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" - New Seekers.

    and

    I'd most like to hear:

"All I ever Need Is You" - Sonny and Cher (double A side with "I've Got You Babe" which gets more airplay but I always preferred the former)

  • Comment number 4.

Joe - we must have Blinded by The Light on your list of lists?

  • Comment number 5.

Monday's must be designed to keep out the regulars, as it is the 3rd time this theme has been up (and unless we lie about our first records, it could be a bit repetitive).

My first single was Hawkwind: "Angels of Death". ;-)

  • Comment number 6.

It amazes me now but my first single that I can recall buying was the T Rex single Solid Gold Easy Action. Bought with Christmas money and in hindsight this seems a good choice for an 8 year old in Jan 1973!

I was later to be more affected by Bowie, The Jam, Springsteen, Clash and many many more great singles.

I really do yearn for the 7" single generation.

  • Comment number 7.

Here, Harry, you dont happen to keep a list of themes done, do you?

  • Comment number 8.

    MONDAY FIRST SINGLE
I got a record token for my 14th Birthday in May 1979 and did not know what to buy. I gave it to my sister to buy something and she bought me Janet Kay 'Silly Games' and Roxy Music 'Dance Away' liitle did I know that 25 years later I would be working for the band and have my name on Roxy/Ferry records. Ironically Dance Away is now one of my least favourite Roxy songs. Needless to say 'Silly Games' was not just the first Janet Kay record I bought but it was also the last too.

    TUESDAY LISTS

Roxy Music 'If There Is Something" was used in the recent Daniel Craig Movie 'Flashbacks Of A Fool'. The song was also covered by Bowie's Tin Machine.
    lyrics excerpt
"I would do anything for you
    I would climb mountains
I would swim all the oceans blue
I would walk a thousand miles
Reveal my secrets, more than enough for me to share
I would put roses round our door
    Sit in the garden
    Growing potatoes by the score"

    WEDNESDAY OCCUPATIONS

I am a civil engineer and manager of construction sites. I am currently building a sewage treatment works in Newtonmore so I am open for suggestions for songs for this job.

    THURSDAY GHOSTS

It has to be 'Ghosts' by Japan the worlds most commercial weird song ever. David Sylvian sounds like Bryan Ferry with flat batteries on this one.

    WEDNESDAY

    'The J.C.B. Song' - Nizlopi

For Norrie, who is too shy to ask for it himself.

    Set it up, Babs!

    heehee

  • Comment number 11.

    Hurry up Harry, come on.

  • Comment number 12.

    TUESDAY:

"I've been everywhere" - Hank Snow.

"That's What I Like About The South" - by Phil Harris, who was the voice of Baloo the Bear in The Jungle Book.

"Chevalier's Muster Roll" - The Corries (not heard this for years and years)

"The Court of King Caratacus" - Rolf Harris ...sorry :-)

"Zombie" - The Cranberries ( pretty short list - tanks, bombs, guns - but a good song).

"Patience of Angels" - Eddi Reader -there's a door in a wall in a house in a street in a town - always reminds me of "The Rattling Bog" the way this list is put together :)

  • Comment number 13.

Mon. First single. Look Wot You Dun-Slade

    Tues. Pop Muzik-M

Wed. R.u.b.b.i.s.h- Carter USM or Dennis by Blondie ( as that the name on my bin lorry)

Thurs; Haunted- Shane McGowan & Sinead O'Connor

  • Comment number 14.

Norrie - I distinctly remember a girl in my class having a T.Rex T Shirt (she got it from her "big cousin") and my friends and I thought it was odd that... A. the band sounded like a lard substitute (think about it), and... B. She would wear a t shirt for a band that were so grown up. I'd heard "Deborah" and thought it was Ok but nothing special. Of course, very shortly afterwards T.Rex were having hit singles all over the place and Marc Bolan was on the front cover of just about every magazine.

  • Comment number 15.

The very first records I ever bought were a full set of Gilbert & Sullivan operas on 78 by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, recorded between the wars. A small snippet of The Gondoliers even made it onto a track we recorded in our band at school!

Still got the records but my turntable won't play them...

  • Comment number 16.

I have gramaphone but it's damaged and won't play - anyone know if there are any repair shops in Edinburgh. There used to be a shop in Stockbridge that I thought would do repairs but when I tried to google it I got the impression it had closed down. I'd love to get that back in working order, although I did manage to get a copy of Hoagy Carmichael's "Mr Music Master" (which was my most favourite 78 from my Mum's collection) on CD recently. I even have a 78 called "The Waltzing Strings" which was the theme music to Top of the Form and I love The Ink Spots singing "Java Jive". Sigh!

  • Comment number 17.

I work in IT and have done everything from artificial intelligence to networking, web sites, massive databases, server configuration - you name it! So I have gone for tunes that reflect the technological age:

Video Killed The Radio Star - The Buggles
    Computer World - Kraftwerk
Electric Dreams - Phil Oakey/Georgio Moroder
I Don't Like Mondays - Boomtown Rats (silicone chip inside her head...)
Are Friends Electric - Gary Numan
    Digital Man - Rush
    Floppy Disk - AC/DC
    Chip Away - Jane's Addiction (K that's a wee joke)
    Network News - Robert Plant
    The Web - Marillion
    Digital Garden - Prince

  • Comment number 18.

    Monday

Mines was a RCA Maxi-disc i.e. an A-SIDE plus a two track B-SIDE so technically not an EP and was David Bowies Space Oddity. Ironically enough it was Velvet Goldmine on the B-SIDE I seem to recall having a longer lasting preference for.

For Monday's 'first singles' (bought), I believe I may be quite the fortunate man of style and taste (almost).
I recall purchasing, from Tempo Tapes up at the Mearns Cross shoping centre, two singles on the same day. They were:

    Lucky Number - Lene Lovich
    Oliver's Army - Elvis Costello

When I think back, it could have been so much worse, so not a bad call then.

Now, if you're talking about first singles (gifted), then it'd have to be a children's song, like the Ugly Duckling or the Runaway Train or some such thing. I can't recall the exact one, as my younger sisters got one each as well, so there's a blur of that period in time - so very long ago.

As for list theme, well one track stands out as I put it on a fairly recent playlist I compiled for a CD to send to a friend. The track is

    Hello - Beloved

I'm sure if you hear it again you will recognise the reeling off of well known names.

RoxyJohn, I like that Janet Kay track. In fact, I put that on another compilation CD for the same friend. Funnily enough, he lives in Australia, and he never calls anymore. D'ya think that might be a reason?

JuliefromEdiburgh, I'm interested in finding out the name of that Hoagy Carmichael CD 'cos there's a track I heard once, by him, and I liked it a lot. I'd like to source it, if possible.

    Later for Wed/Thur themes

    Mike Tough

  • Comment number 20.

    Monday - First Single

This would definitely fall under the 'cringeworthy' category now, but hey, I was supporting Canadian music even then: Corey Hart - Boy In The Box

    Tuesday - Lists

88 Lines About 44 Women - The Nails - I don't know if there is a radio edit? If so, It would be great to hear.
I've Been Everywhere - Johnny Cash
It's De-Lovely - Cole Porter by Ella Fitzgerald
It's The End Of The World As We Know It - R.E.M.

    Wednesday - My Occupation

I'm the mum to two young boys, so I would consider motherhood my primary occupation. For that reason, I'd suggest Mother's Little Helper - The Rolling Stones (tongue planted firmly in cheek).
I'm also self-employed, so The Boss - James Brown would fit too (although I'm a GOOD mother!)

    Thursday - Ghosts/Ghouls

    A-Punk - Vampire Weekend
Going To Hell - The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Walking With A Ghost - Tegan and Sara (a bit of Canadian content too!)
    Bela Lugosi's Dead - Bauhaus

  • Comment number 21.

    Roxy re Wednesday...

Would you be insulted by something from the offensive blemish on the Clashs otherwise remarkable output 鈥淐ut the Crap鈥?

  • Comment number 22.

    Tuesday - List of lists:

Back to me - Kathleen Edwards
World without tears - Lucinda Williams
It was a very good year - Sinatra
You know the rest - Steve Earle
Whose bed have your boots been under - Shania Twain
Sweet old world - Emmylou Harris

Please mention, but don't play "All kinds of everything" by Dana.

    Joe
    Linlithgow

    RJ - for Wednesday

What a waste - Ian Drury & the Blockheads?

  • Comment number 24.

This is going to be quite a week of revelations on the profiles of bloggers front. What with first singles and occupations.
BTW, whats happened to Glen? No sooner is RJ back.....has anybody actually seen the pair together?

  • Comment number 25.

    Here I am

    Monday

    Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix

    Tuesday

These Foolish Things - Bryan Ferry

Titanic - Sultana - now there was a list

    Wednesday

Free Electric Band - Albert Hammond

    Thursday

    Love Bites - Def Leppard

  • Comment number 26.

I'm really struggling to come up with anything for these themes. Occupation, there are a couple of songs, neither of which are good. Might just have a week off.

    TUESDAY

'My Favourite Things' - Julie Andrews

    I refuse to suffer alone.

  • Comment number 27.

Mike: The Hoagy Carmichael CD is "The Old Music Master" which is also the name of my favourite song of his, for sentimental reasons mainly, although "Stardust" would come a close second. There are plenty of CDs to be found online.

    WEDNESDAY:
Mungo Jerry - "You don't have to be in the Army to fight in the war".
Womack and Womack - "Love Wars" (of course the Army don't really love wars... just fight in them. I answer their telephones while they're away).
Fun Boy Three - "The Telephone Always Rings".

THURSDAY: "I Want My Baby Back" - Jimmy Cross.

  • Comment number 28.

    TUESDAY

'Something For The Girl With Everything' - Sparks

So much for the week off.

  • Comment number 33.

    Norrie,
Sorry, man. I was powerless to resist!

  • Comment number 34.

    Hi madmac

Dont you wish they would actually delete Cut The Crap it is truly awful. Considering that the Clash were one of the greatest band sof all time makes it even worse yet strangely This Is England is just magnificent. As is Live at Shea, if you don't have it yet cheer yourself up and buy it Strummer is on fantastic form.

    Julie

I liked you trex story! Another good thread would be artists / albums you thought were rubbish as first then realsied were brilliant.

I hope you get your gramophone fixed, that sounds like fun and I hope you were impressed by my self restraint in not getting into a discussion on turntables and amps!! Tempted as I was.

Could I second your request for Patience of Angles but I would like to hear Boo Hewerdines own version from his excellent Harmonograph album.

    Danielle

No one said you were not a good mother! And if you get stressed we are here for you! How about somthing by the Boss himself!?

    Cheers

    Norrie

  • Comment number 35.

Norrie, feel free to second the request, I know it's Boo's song but I do prefer Eddi's version.

  • Comment number 36.

    Monday
Almost 36 years ago to the day I bought Mouldy Old Dough. It must have traumatised me coz it was a whole year before I bought my second single, All the Way From Memphis. In between time I bought my first album - 20 Fantastic Hits (by the original artists, may well have been the first to use original tracks and not cover versions ala the TOTPS albums, not sure). It was released by Arcade, but when I tried to look it up to remind myself of the tracks list, I could only find a Dutch release which was very different. I remember Maggie May, One Bad Apple, Beautiful Sunday and Love Grows but thats about it.

  • Comment number 37.

Norrie - Ha! I was referring to the lyrics 'I'm a bad motha' in the song. Good to know you're there for impromptu counseling sessions though. I'm hoping you subscribe to Lucy Van Pelt's idea of appropriate rates for psychiatric help - my nickel is in the mail!

  • Comment number 38.

I was just being silly Danielle!

  • Comment number 39.

Mon - 1st single. No doubt and no shame!! Slade - Merry xmas. 8 or 9 years old and proud as I handed over the 35p or whatever it was!

Wed - As a window cleaner there's the Van song, but there's also Breaking glass (Hazel O'Connor I think). Forget George Formby, but how about anything by The Bare Naked Ladies? In a previous life I was a farmer so we could "plough the fields and scatter". Just don't mention the Wurzels!!

  • Comment number 40.

    Me too!

  • Comment number 41.

    THURSDAY

'The Dundee Ghost' - Matt McGinn

  • Comment number 42.

I see the blog is still on BST

    GMT rools OK?

  • Comment number 43.

Johnny - Cleaning Windows is a great track, Van refrences his Winow Cleaning on a few songs and I love the lyric on St Dominics Preview "shammy cleaning all the windows, singing songs about Edoth Piaffs soul". I would love to hear either of those twp tracks.

  • Comment number 44.

    Hello!

Thanks to Bryan and Vic for playing 2 of my 3 requests in last weeks shows. That's a result that Meatloaf himself would be delighted with - and if it's good enough for the big man, it's good enough for me!

    This weeks suggestions:

    First Single

Lean on Me by Red Box. I haven't heard this for years, I'm sure it will sound terribly dated now.

    List Song

"3 is a magic number" by Bob Dorough/Schoolhouse rock. I suppose it's a list of things about the number 3. I've been thinking about this song recently as Ms. Chops is due to have our first baby Chops in the next few weeks. "A man and a woman had a little baby. Now there's three in the family - and that's a magic number"

Ms. Chops chooses "Song for Whoever" by The Beautiful South for her list song.

I'd also second glen millers choice of "These Foolish Things" by Bryan Ferry, I think it's great.

    Occupations

"Working in a Coal Mine" by Lee Dorsey would be fitting for me (us dwarves are tremendous miners).

    Halloween

"She's not there" by the Zombies.

    Regards
    Mr Chops, The Dwarf

  • Comment number 45.

    MrChops

A wee choplet - all the best hope Mrs Chops is keeping well!

    Adam In Rio

Norries younger brother has been dispatched, again, to the anvestral loft. His report is as follows:

    01 - Maggie May
    02 - One Bad Apple
    03 - Pushbike Song
    04 - Brand New Key
05 - Early in the Morning
    06 - Coz I Luv You
    07 - Johnny Reggae
08 - Blame It On The Pony Express
    09 - My World
    10 - Candida
11 - Beg Steal or Borrow
12 - La La Means I LOve You
    13 - THe Baby
    14 - Puppy Love
15 - Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)
    16 - I'm Gonna Make You Mine
    17 - Can't Let You Go
    18 - Beautiful Sunday
19 - What Have They Done To My Song, Ma-
20 - Blue is the Colour

He has been scolded for not including the artists, his retort was google. 20 classics, to be reclaimed on my next visit North.

  • Comment number 46.

Sorry to learn of your difficulties this week Scotch is not like you. However, DO keep the comments coming...

B.T.W. I think Adam must now be on the party line... wow what a response time by Glenn, these offshore call centres can achieve excellent customer service targets but was this more akin to a moonlight serenade...

Norrie, should not interfere with history plus I never bought it, suppose it was because Strummer had embarrassed himself by sacking Mick Jones. Once B.A.D. started charting, theirs was a fresh and innovative sound with its sampling etc... J.S. did redeem himself in my humble opinion by his subsequent public reconciliation, accompanying song writing and production credits on No.10 Upping St. Shea is almost in the same category... isnt Terry Chimes on the skins? Nevertheless, Mrs Madmac was always the ardent supporter of the Clash in our house and had thought of placing a copy under the tree this year.

Like the shout re your occupation Mr Chop, however you haven't heard DEVO's cover?

    Regards to all M.M.

  • Comment number 47.

    Tuesday...

Anyway, anyhow, anywhere either by the Who or D.B.'s Pin Ups cover more my age group.. Michael "Woody" Woodmanseys drumming is just excellent almost as good as the Loons.

  • Comment number 56.

Scotch-git: Thanks for the GMT reminder. Now that we are following in the footsteps of our neighbours to the south; I'll have to remember to listen to the show an hour earlier next week. Enjoy that extra hour!

  • Comment number 57.

First record I bought, hmmm. It was a tape copy of Poped In Souled Out by Wet Wet Wet, Hogmanay 1987 from the Wollies that was in Paisley High Street, there's a WH Smug and a sports shop where it used to be. Ah, such a loss...

  • Comment number 58.

    Hi all

Well, as BB predicted I have two "first singles!" One is Bucks Fizz "Land of Make Believe" but the one I would prefer to hear after all these years would be "It's My Party" by Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin..great track. Hope this one is still living in my parents attic where I think I left it when I ran off to college all those years ago....

AFR...I am looking forward to occupations night too....could be revelations all over the shop....

  • Comment number 59.

Is Poped In Souled Out the one with 'Wishing I was Luciani' on it?

  • Comment number 60.

    Danielle,
You are very welcome. Always happy to help out our listeners in the colonies!
Are you knee deep in snow yet?

  • Comment number 61.

    Glenn re no.53 why not...

I only floated the Bon in order to generate some sort of feed back... this could be changed to appeal to others also. Some of the G.I.O. Team drink in the Bath Street area on occasion... Grouch of St. Jude maybe their apperance could generate more interest.

You know what sometimes I am far too far up my own ...... and always seeking to suggest songs that have artistic integrity or something whatever it may be. But you know what... 3 Steps To Heaven is a great track. I used to love Showaddywaddy as a youngster.

    Great shout!

    Norrie

  • Comment number 66.

Norrie, I know what you mean. Who cares if the track is cheesy or naff in another persons view. Thats what GIO is all about playing what we request. The listeners make the show

MikeT-23 - I'm pretty sure if you go to the login page and choose the 'forgot your password' link; you are able to choose a new password. Hope that helps!

My first single (for reasons that I can't really remember) was Dave Davies - Lincoln County.

I was (and still am) a great Kinks fan. But why my very first purchase was not something more obvious - like Days or Waterloo Sunset - I don't know. I have not heard Lincoln County for nearly 40 years - but could still sing every word! I seem to recall it had a good B-side too - There is no Life Without Your Love.

First album was Stand Up by Jethro Tull. Cost 19/11 (pre-decimal - that was a penny less than a pound). What an album. And what an album sleeve - a double cover, which when you opened it the members of the band 'stood up' in 3-D. You don't get that with a download!

Thanks for the sewage works suggestions or as they are now poshly called, Waste Water Treatment Works. The floaters one made me laugh.

What I am pleased about is that 60 posts after my original one (or 2 as I must have sent it twice by mistake) that no one has suggested "anything by Bryan Ferry + Roxy Music as they are all sh--"

Hey RJ - I would have thought Wasteland would fit the bill and as its only about a minute long you would probably have been allowed another song too!

Re If There Is Something, as a Bowie fan I truly hated Tin Machine but I thought the cover of this was actually ok, and on the live album pretty decent. Probably you hated it though!

    Cheers

    Back after a week away where I don't think I listened to the radio or switched on the TV, the former slightly disapointing, the latter pure heaven. In between trying to catch up at work well;

    Monday
Everlasting Love - Love Affair and as stated before I would happily smite that dwarf Cullum with a baseball bat for his mangling of this reminder of happy days.

    Tuesday
I've Been Everywhere - Johnny Cash

    Wednesday
Struggling on this as don't knoiw any songs about being a Commercial Specialist, even if I understood what it means myself! However, I deal / 'specialise' in gas so Classical Gas by Mason Williams. I may think a bit more on this.

    Thursday
There's a Ghost in My House - R Dean Taylor

  • Comment number 73.

    Monday
Had to think back, but believe my 1st single was "Stuck in the middle with you" by Steelers Wheel

    Tuesday
Kiss on my List - Hall and Oates

    Wednesday
Worked on the Clyde since I left school so it has to be Shipbuilding by Elvis Costello or Hue and Cry
Perhaps If I had a boat by Lyle Lovett

    Jim

  • Comment number 74.

Jim: have you heard Robert Wyatt's version of "Shipbuilding". It's worth a listen.

  • Comment number 75.

Hey Hoppo - you better watch out or the Chops dwarf clan will be after you!

  • Comment number 76.

Norrie - good job tracking down the track list.

    Tuesday
I Could Be Happy - Altered Images.

I'll go along with Three Steps to Heaven too.
That'll get them "Whop, whop woooooo"ing around the tea table.

Lists Theme (BB asked me for a long list, so here it is):

4 Notes - Martyn Bennett (would really love to hear this on the show)
Kiss On My List - Hall And Oates (obvious - a must play... will be asked for by others!)

The Wedding List - Kate Bush
The Final Countdown - Europe (another obvious one)
The Isley Brothers - Take Inventory
ABC - The Jackson 5 (another obvious one)
Onomatopoeia - Todd Rundgren (contains a long list of weird sounds all fully described)
    Alphabet Street - Prince
Little Black Book - Belinda Carlisle
My Little Red Book - Manfred Mann
    Calendar Girl - Neil Sedaka
Rikki Don't Lose That Number - Steely Dan (fantastic song - not an obvious choice, but think about it...)
In The Waiting Line - Zero 7
Part Of The Queue - Oasis
Count On Me - Whitney Houston
    Timetable - Genesis
    Guest List - Eels
    My List - The Killers
    Scale - The Chemical Brothers
The List Goes On - The Ordinary Boys

Counting On You - Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers
    Classified 1A - Cher
What's Next On The Menu - Pete Rock And C.L. Smooth
Prime Of Life - Neil Young And Crazy Horse (prime numbers are definitely a list!)

Try Counting Sheep - Black Sheep (I've double checked the lyrics are clean)
Travelin' Man - Rick Nelson (list of girls in every port)
Doctor's Orders - Aretha Franklin & Luther Vandross (presumably a list of orders...)
The Wee Kircudbright Centipede - Matt McGinn or Alastair McDonald (long list of what all the legs are doing LOL)

Good shout Norrie "A Wasteland" by Bryan Ferry I forgot about that one. You seem to know your BF/RM well.

I didn't mind the Bowie version of If There Is Something it wasn't the first Roxy song he covered, there are others but remain unreleased.

I met Bowie in 2001 back stage at a Roxy show in New York and we had a chat about Plockton of all things

  • Comment number 79.

Another for LISTS night is Bowie's version of "Friday On My Mind"

  • Comment number 80.

Lists - forgot "Things" by Bobby Darin.

    Wednesday

One of my functions over the last few years has been as a Chairman of the Board so how about

I'm Bored - Iggy Pop ('I'm Chairman of the Bored' is a line in the chorus).

That would be my first choice, but if you go with Chairmen of the Board then "Little more Time" or "Dangling on a String" would be fine.

  • Comment number 82.

    Hello all

I am still working on my Civil Engineers list!

RoxyJohn's suggestion of Friday on My Mind has prompted another suggestion from me which I think would be great and its the Cure or David Gray and Friday I'm in Love which of course lists all the week days. How jealous of RJ am I!!

Adam - all of your suggestions for Chairman etc are great, would love to hear any of those. Not sure if the track listing is the right one for your album memories but its the one we had, I am sure ther is a Vol 2 as well.

Another track which might be good for lists is Van Morrison and In the Days Before Rock n Roll which lists many of the artsists that influenced him. Though strangely he does not list Grumpy the Dwarf is not listed.

    Hmmm.

    LISTS NIGHT

Roxy Music's Manifesto by far one of Ferry's best lyrics

    Google them and see.

    Hi Bryan,

Treid my best with this weeks topics and here goes:

Monday - My first single was Slade Mama Weer All Crazee Now bought from woolies when I was seven.

Tuesday - The only song I know with a list of sorts is XTC The Mayor of Simpleton when they list all the things they are not.

Wednesday - Since I am now a Director in an educational institution I thought this song from Wire summed it up - A Question of Degree.

Thursday - I have had more luck with this one so here goes:

    999 - Nasty Nasty

    The Damned - Grimley Fiendish

    David Bowie - Scarey Monsters

The Fall - There's A Ghost In My House

Gary Numan - I Die You Die

  • Comment number 86.

Norrie- there's a Vol 2 and Vol 3. You can get the tracklists for these readily on google.

  • Comment number 87.

Adam - Aye googling would be easier but it was good to sent him to the loft to get covered in dust and cobwebd!!

  • Comment number 88.

I think the first single I bought was "Goody Two Shoes" by Adam and the Ants. ( Although it might have been Uptown Girl by Billy Joel I think that particular tune has been played on the radio, PLENTY!)

I do distinctly remember- at 9 years old and in the days before singles where played to death for a month on the radion before even being released and hardy any singles went straight in at No.1- that I heard "You Win Again" by the Bee Gees on Top of the Pops on the Thursday, buying it with my pocket money on the Saturday and then hearing it reach the top spot on the Sunday. I remember going in to school on Monday claiming responsiblity for it hitting the top of the charts and then of course waiting till Thursday when my good taste would be confirmed by a special "This week's new number one!!" performance on Top of the Pops.

    I was chuffed to bits

  • Comment number 89.

So, it turns out you actually listen to the show an hour later in Canada!

Adam_from_Rio - I work with many nonprofit organizations and thought 'I'm Bored' would have been a good one too. Great choice!

  • Comment number 90.

Norrie - it was good that you did, as I said, I coudnt find Vol 1 on google.

  • Comment number 91.

Morrissey - Something Is Squeezing My Skull

  • Comment number 92.

    Sorry that was for lists.

Some things are squeezing my skull but I guess I would get scolded for saying anything!

  • Comment number 93.

    Tuesday List night -
Has to include at least one Barenaked Ladies track -

Million Dollars - things to buy

    Another Postcard - chimpanzee pictures

One Week - all sorts of random stuff.

    Wednesday Occupation night -
I've worked in European Structural Funds so could we have a wee bit of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which is the EU anthem.

Also, Money for Nothing by Dire Straits

Finally, anything by UB40 as I was recently made redundant.

    Cheers

  • Comment number 94.

Kirsty.....sorry to hear that. Not having a fun time in my line of work at he moment either!

Hope some opportunity pops up soon......

  • Comment number 95.

Just a quick thought - what about Substitute by The Who for lists night? I dont reacll any of the Who played?

  • Comment number 96.

Thanks Norrie, and hope things pick up for you soon.

I could always become a professional caption maker-upper....
    ;)

  • Comment number 97.

Lists...........What Did Delaware - Perry Como. Get's his himself in a right state!

Fao JimFraeErskine. Would also like tae hear 'My Little Red Book', great Burt number but surely it must be the ultimate version fae LOVE that's played. My 24 year auld funnily enough informed me the other day that The Last Shadow Puppets have just released it. Youtubed it last night. No bad but obviously al a LOVE and no the Manns.
Curious story about Part Of The Queue - Oasis. I spoke to John Head of the wonderful Scouse band SHACK before a LOVE gig in Liverpool (which Arthur Lee never turned up tae incidently) who told me that Noel G had phoned him and brother Mick and asked if he could rip off a track fae the wonderful SHACK album Waterpistol. 'Go 'ed said they, you'll do it anyway mate'. It is almost a direct copy of 'Stranger' from Waterpistol. The thanks SHACK got was a two album deal and supporting Oasis on their UK tour of 2005. Funny old world.

    TUESDAY

Half Man Half Biscuit: "God Gave Us Life" ("but he also gave us Eartha Kitt, Little & Large, Una Stubbs, Keith Harris, Wendy Craig, Lionel Blair, etc etc")
Played recently, but worth a mention Dexys' "Dance Stance" ("Oscar Wilde, Brendan Behan, Sean O'Casey, George Bernard Shaw, Eugene O'Neill, .......(memory fails) ..., Edna O'Brien and Laurence Sterne")

Go on, Bryan, get the Biccies on!

  • Comment number 99.

    HALLOWE'EN:

"I Want My Baby Back" - Jimmy Cross (spoof, teen-tragedy song...a splatter platter).

"Hallowe'en Spooks" - Lambert Hendricks and Ross (the Ross being Annie Ross - Jimmy Logan's sister). One of those daft jazz novelty records. Great spooky noises but more silly than scary.

"We Only Come Out At Night" - Smashing Pumpkins

On of my most favourite ever songs "The Killing Moon" by Echo and The Bunnymen has a great sinister feel to it, as has "Playground Twist" by Siouxsie and the Banshees..

How about the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band's version of "Monster Mash" for a change.

  • Comment number 100.

Adam - I don't keep a list of themes, that would just be anal, wouldn't it?

Nobody could ever accuse GIO listeners of being list-obsessed.

Norrie - that Dawn song about thrush really dates you :-)
