Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 12:11 UK time, Saturday, 29 November 2008

Next week on Get It On we're embarking on the four nations challenge which was suggested by Jim In Erskine. The themes are very simple. We'll be playing home-grown artists, local heroes and songs connected to each country. At the end of the week we'll have a chance to reflect on which country has produced the most culturally rich playlist.passport.jpg
Monday - Northern Ireland/Ireland
Tuesday - England
Wednesday - Wales
Thursday - Scotland

Dead End Kids...

Bryan Burnett | 18:51 UK time, Thursday, 27 November 2008

With stage clothes from Paddy's Market and a headline slot at 'shopping week' in Stromness under their belts, The Dead End Kids from Kilmarnock scored a hit in the 70s with a cover of Have I The Right. It was one of the standout tracks on tonight's show. Great fun. here's the link to the about them I mentioned on air.

Bin bag girls

Bryan Burnett | 19:49 UK time, Wednesday, 26 November 2008

"Can I mention a single from early 80s by group called Toto Coelo?" said Ciaran's Dad on the text tonight. "I think it's I Eat Cannibals. Sleeve had them dressed in bin bags. Mad as a bag of cats. love to hear it."
It did and here's the proof...

Drumming up some trade...

Bryan Burnett | 17:13 UK time, Wednesday, 26 November 2008

There's been another shocking lack of judgment and taste shown by bosses at ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 2. It seems that another two of their presenters have recorded something that's going to outrage the nation. The ´óÏó´«Ã½ news reports that "Sir Terry Wogan and Aled Jones are to release their version of Bing Crosby and David Bowie hit Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth for Christmas."
Now that should give the D***y M**l something to complain about. I can see another 40,000 complaints coming in.
I know that I shouldn't criticise anything that's going to raise money for Children In Need and for radio presenters Terry is the guv'nor, but wasn't the Bing and Bowie version bad enough?
Maybe when we do our Christmas Eve show we should compile a montage of Christmas cringers. Any contenders?

Katherine and The Three Degrees...

Bryan Burnett | 17:09 UK time, Tuesday, 25 November 2008

Not many men want a girlfriend who is taller, faster and fitter than them. Well according to Katherine Grainger, the Olympic rower who was Edi Stark's guest on Stark Talk this week.
In the interview she reveals why she ended up in floods of tears after only winning a silver and gives Edi a sort of scoop when she reveals whether or not she'll compete in 2012.
I've just finished listening to it on listen again and it's a terrific interview. Grainger is passionate, driven, clever, talented, and (as Edi reminds us) "absolutely gorgeous".
As well as competing at the very highest level of her sport she's currently studying for her third degree - this one a !
It seems my blog is full of inspirational women this week ... and I don't just mean Katherine Grainger. Edi Stark was an important influence on my career and in fact was the boss who persuaded me to give up my day job and pursue a career in radio. I still think she's one of the most talented broadcasters we have. Have a listen to this interview and see why.

Some guys have all the luck...

"Keep going till you feel like your head is going to explode...and then work a little harder." That's the advice I've been given this weekend - and surprisingly not from my producer.
It came from , the Glasgow cyclist who came home with two gold medals from the Paralympic Games in Beijing this year.

I was lucky enough to meet her at a black tie do in Kelvingrove Museum on Friday night where Aileen picked up the trophy as Disabled athlete of the year in the Glasgow sportsperson awards.

I was hosting the Scottish Athletics dinner and Paula was the guest of honour. I had to pinch myself during the pre-dinner drinks when I realised that I was lucky enough to be discussing my marathon performance with the woman who is often referred to as the greatest marathon runner alive! Her biggest revelation came during dinner when she slipped off her high heels to reveal that they had been specially made for her by the well known sportwear company who are her main sponsor.
My favourite bit of advice of the night though was this little nugget which was passed on by the sister of one of the award winning members of Jogscotland in Peterhead. Worried that her strong 'Peterheed' accent might not be understood in the big city she urged:Ìý
" Hae a good time in Glesga, jist dinna spik!"

Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 10:03 UK time, Saturday, 22 November 2008

After another busy week of GIO it's time once again to start thinking about next week's themes. Have a look at these and post your suggestions on the blog or email me at the usual address...

disc.jpg

Monday
Alex in Glasgow suggested 'weight' as a theme for tonight. That could mean anything from 16 Tons to He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother. If you are thinking about a pre-Christmas diet then you are sure to be inspired by tonight's show....

Tuesday
Shake, Rattle and Roll is the time tonight. I can think of a certain Welsh rock n roll legend who is bound to make an appearance, but get in touch and let me know what else you want to hear...

Wednesday
Another two parter this week. Girl bands is the theme tonight....

Thursday
....Which means it's boy bands tonight, but please don't think I mean two hours of Westlife! Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles and other bands with 'boys' in them will all feature. E-mail getiton@bbc.co.uk or leave your suggestion on the blog...

The great of '78...

Bryan Burnett | 09:58 UK time, Friday, 21 November 2008

Last night's show was a great opportunity for us all to share memories of 1978 - the year Radio Scotland came on air. Alan from Hawick called to say that he remembers taking part in Tom Ferrie's quiz that year and winning 1st prize which was an Encyclopedia!
Jam1978.jpgRockin' Ralph had a great '78 and thanks to having pals at different universities he managed to see: "Thin Lizzy, The Quo,Rory Gallagher, John Martyn, The Undertones, Van Halen supporting Black Sabbath, Ian Dury, AC/DC, Eddie and the Hot Rods, The Police, The Jam, Dire Straits, Elvis Costello, Dave Edmunds, The Ramones, The Clash...and I still have some of the tickets and t-shirts. £1.75 to see Dire Straits at Coventry Uni and £1.50 to see AC/DC."
Jim from Erskine had his memories triggered by Radio Scotland's opening gala at the Kelvin Hall - "with special guests the chart topping group, Brotherhood of Man!!"
" We quite often played gigs in the main hall and even once in the massive arena used for the Christmas fair," said Jim.
As always food was uppermost in our minds last night. I loved the texter whose mother used to buy them Pot Noodles to watch Monkey as she thought it would be authentic. Ken Reid in North Berwick also had us all licking our lips in anticipation of a Vesta meal for one followed by Angel Delight and washed down with a bottle of Concorde. Ken also planned to dress up for the show. "In 1978 everyone was giving up flares but I held on to mine for as long as possible and only gave them up with a considerable fight...I also have my German air force coat, bought mail order through Exchange and Mart."
Elsewhere on the blog, Julie from Edinburgh shares some of her fashion secrets from back then. "I do remember platform shoes but, in 1978, punky, second hand shop finds were de rigeur. I remember going to see a band, possibly The Clash or The Buzzcocks, and I wore stilletto-heeled shoes, black drainpipe jeans (we couldn't buy them skinny enough and used to sew the seams to take them in ourselves) with my old Brownie uniform (the old, military-style, breast-pocketed, hand-me-down-from-older-sisters version) worn as a shirt!"
Sharon from Aberdeen e-mailed in to point out: "You can't have a party without Primula cheese on Ritz biscuits with a pickled onion in the middle! It came with chives or ham in it and you squeezed it out of the tube. How sophisticated!"

Bryan's buffett...

Bryan Burnett | 17:27 UK time, Thursday, 20 November 2008

hi003818187.jpgCheesy pineapples on sticks, tinned ham, coronation chicken, prawn vol au vents, and a cold quiche are just some of the items currently residing under my desk.
Inspired by Norrie's text about his plan to hold a 1978 party during the show I have decided to turn the studio into Fanny Craddock's kitchen for the night. Some of her more outrageous recipes are not practical to lug into work in a sports bag but I feel certain that she will approve of my tinfoil covered grapefruit centerpiece.buffet.jpgI'd love to hear your memories of what you ate in '78. Leave a comment on the blog with your memories of the days when chicken in a basket was the coolest dinner in town.
JZ.jpgThe boss joined us in the studio for our small celebration and after enjoying a sausage on a stick revealed that in '78 his ownership of Wing's Greatest Hits saw him labeled the least cool guy in the class. Despite that teenage faux pas he did end up running his own radio station so I suppose that puts him top of the classroom cool list again...Ìý

Sheikhing all over...

Bryan Burnett | 17:34 UK time, Tuesday, 18 November 2008

Forget Gun and Roses Chinese Democracy ( 14 years in the making!) the that I really want to hear is the one that Sheikh Abdulla Bin Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa allegedly paid Michael Jackson to record.MJ.jpg Fancying himself as a bit of a songwriter, the Sheikh's plan was to get Jacko to record his demo tapes and turn them into an album. He also said he paid for and built a recording studio for him and Jackson to make records together.
At £4.7 Million it has to be the ultimate vanity project.

Birthday Buddies...

Bryan Burnett | 17:36 UK time, Monday, 17 November 2008

Kirsty from Killie has got Ricky Martin and Lemmy, while Angus in Skye has got Marvin Gaye and Keren from Bananarama! Who do you share your birthday with? That's the theme for tonight and it looks like it's going to be great fun. It's the contrasting 'birthday buddies' that are making us smile. Some great imaginary duets are possible by teaming them up. Maria Callas and Britney Spears for instance. tv001991906.jpg
I have got Prince Phillip and Judy Garland for mine but some people are way better off. If you were born on July 6th you could blow out the candles with 50 cent, Nancy Reagan, The Dalai Lama and Sly Stallone. Or what about those lucky souls born on 13th October. They get to celebrate with Margaret Thatcher, Marie Osmond, Nana Mouskouri and Lenny Bruce. What a swell party that would be...

Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 11:37 UK time, Sunday, 16 November 2008

Thanks to everyone who supported Children In Need last week and a special thank you to the regulars who came down to say hello on Friday night. I am looking forward to getting 'back to normal' this week and I think we've got some good themes lined up for you...

stonethecrows.jpg

Monday:
Mine is 'Judy Garland', Barbara's is 'Maggie Bell' and Kirsten's is 'John Paul Jones from Led Zep...but who was born on your birthday? That's the theme for tonight as we look forward to ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Scotland's 30th. Text or call during the show or why not leave a comment on the blog and if you can't think of one tell us what day you were born on and we'll find you a celebrity to blow out the candles with...

Tuesday:

Julie in the Borders suggested 'first' and 'last' as a theme. Tonight we'll do First Kiss and First Time Ever I Saw Your Face....

Wednesday:

...which means tonight we'll do Always The Last To Know. What do you want to hear? Email your suggestions to getiton@bbc.co.uk

Thursday:

´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Scotland is 30 years old at the weekend so tonight we turn back the clock to the year we came on air. 1978 is the theme so e-mail or blog with your memories of '78.

I'm a teenage d***bag...

Bryan Burnett | 15:36 UK time, Thursday, 13 November 2008

It will not surprise you to hear that inappropriate language is a hot topic at the ´óÏó´«Ã½ at the moment. However CaptRamius thinks we have taken things too far with the censored version of Teenage Dirtbag that we played on last night's show.
" A bit over the top" was how he described the radio edit which left out three words in the lyrics. I'd like to tell you what they are but, "We must not include offensive language before the watershed or on radio when children are particularly likely to be in our audience, or in online content likely to appeal to a high proportion of children, unless it is justified by the context and then its frequent use must be avoided."
Capt also points out that our censorship was a bit rich particularly as one of our other shows this week talked about 'poo'.
Mind you as the subject was 'Bears' it's not surprising that the Poo(h) word came up several times...
pooh.jpg
....unless of course he is referring to my use of 'keich' on last night's show. Keich as many of you know is the Scots word for poo and as it's not included in our list of offensive words I think I'm alright.

Let's hear it for the kids...

Bryan Burnett | 17:24 UK time, Wednesday, 12 November 2008

It's Children In Need week. Tomorrow we're doing 'needy' so tonight we are doing it for the kids. I don't mind raising money for them but draw the line at playing these little horrors...

Bearing up...

Bryan Burnett | 18:27 UK time, Tuesday, 11 November 2008

ob2.jpgVery impressed by the list of puns submitted by Stewart and Kathleen listening online in SW France for tonight's 'bear' theme. Actually I'm equally impressed they are listening online in France. Enjoy....

Songs about bears:
bearway to heaven
bear necessities
the northern lights of old abeardeen
strawbeary field forever
livin' on a bear

Or anything by:
the bare naked ladies
koala shaker
grizzlee rascal
Robeart Palmer
MC Polaar

Get It On...the road

Bryan Burnett | 16:08 UK time, Monday, 10 November 2008

With Pudsey centre stage this week tonight's show will be live from 'Bears' den in Glasgow. I'll be broadcasting from a major supermarket and encouraging shoppers to part with a 'pound a play' to Get It On.
As well as doing the show and doing the shopping my plan is to get some pictures of the broadcast and of the folk requesting the tunes on to the blog. If nothing else we may get another caption competition out of a pic of me with some oddly shaped marrows from the fruit and veg section.
Update: After asking our photographer to come and take pics we discovered we couldn't get online at the supermarket. Still I am sure you will agree that traveling to the other side of the city, waiting half an hour on a chilly train station platform, getting soaked to the skin twice and then having to go all the way back to work again to get the photo online was worth the effort to get this rather fetching snap of Pudsey and I! Ahhh, the things people do for Children In Need...

Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 09:50 UK time, Saturday, 8 November 2008

pudsey.jpgIt's ´óÏó´«Ã½ Children In Need, so we have a busy week of related themes and events.

Monday
We'll be broadcasting live from a major supermarket in Bearsden, Glasgow on Monday night. Anything goes as we take requests from the customers and staff. And you can still get involved at home through phones and email. All we ask is that you donate at least a pound to Children In Need in exchange for the play of your song. We'll be sprinkling some of your requests through the rest of the week too.

Tuesday
Bears is tonight's theme in honour of our Children In Need mascot, Pudsey Bear! Remember Roachford and Cuddly Toy? Or will Johnny Preston's Running Bear be the top track tonight?

Wednesday
From Kid A to Sweet Child O' Mine, children is our theme tonight - Songs about young people, children and kids. Or get in touch and suggest songs performed by child stars. Requests for 'There's No-one Quite Like Grandma' will not be considered!

Thursday
Help! - Tonight's theme is songs connected to the spirit of Children In Need. So anything to do with giving, helping and supporting could make it on to tonight's playlist.

Friday
A bonus show when we'll be broadcasting live from the foyer of ´óÏó´«Ã½ Scotland HQ at Pacific Quay in Glasgow. It's The Official get It On Pudsey Party when we'll play more of your favourite tracks in exchange for a small donation to Children In Need. So come on down, get involved and support Children In Need.

Miss Babs dolls up...

Bryan Burnett | 18:11 UK time, Thursday, 6 November 2008

bb2.jpgAs mentioned on tonight's show I have donned my dinner suit for an awards ceremony that I'm hosting as soon as tonight's show is over. My producer Barbara didin't want to me to feel like I was the only one who made an effort so during the six o clock news she transformed herself into a cross between Mary Marquis and a Strictly contestant. I am seriously impressed, but it does make me think that maybe ´óÏó´«Ã½ radio presenters should go back to wearing a dinner suit to host the show. Maybe if Bros ( Brand and Ross) had been done up in dickie bows then their standards wouldn't have slipped they way they did.... bb3.jpg

Tonight's monumental theme...

Bryan Burnett | 17:36 UK time, Wednesday, 5 November 2008

big.jpg'Big' is the theme tonight so that means songs about large, abundant, broad, bulky, capacious, colossal, comprehensive, considerable, copious, enormous, excessive, exorbitant, extensive, extravagant, full, generous, giant, gigantic, goodly, grand, grandiose, great, gross, hefty, huge, humongous, immeasurable, immense, jumbo, liberal, massive, monumental, mountainous, plentiful, populous, roomy, sizable, spacious, stupendous, substantial, super, sweeping, thumping, tidy, vast, voluminous, and whopping things...

Presidential Pop...

Bryan Burnett | 19:03 UK time, Tuesday, 4 November 2008

sam.jpgHere's that link to the I mentioned earlier in the show. Could be handy if you're planning to stay up tonight.
This is proving to be a very busy show tonight and the GIO production team are working hard to get as many tunes on as we can . Sam has even found time to don her specs and fix her hair in a Sarah Palin updoo just for tonight's show.
Finally, I promised I would stick up the e-mail from Nancy Cantor who listens online in Arizona. Nancy is a journalist and a political activist and always entertains with her many e-mails to the show. This is very funny but I should point out that these are the personal views of Nancy Cantor and do not necessarily reflect the views of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ blah blah blah etc etc...

"Dear Red States:
If you manage to steal this election, too, we've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're taking the other Blue States with us. In case you aren't aware, that includes California , Hawaii , Oregon , Washington , Minnesota , Wisconsin , Michigan , Illinois and all the Northeast. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California.
To sum up briefly: You get Texas , Oklahoma and all the slave states. We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood.
We get Intel and Microsoft. You get World Com .
We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.
We get 85% of America 's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Alabama .
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states pay their fair share.
Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22% lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of single moms.
Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their children's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq , and hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend our resources in Bush's Quagmire.
With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80% of the country's fresh water, more than 90% of the pineapple and lettuce, 92% of the nation's fresh fruit, 95% of America's quality wines, 90% of all cheese, 90% of the high tech industry, 95% of the corn and soybeans (thanks Iowa!), most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools plus Stanford, Cal Tech, UCLA, Berkeley and MIT.
With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88% of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92% of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100% of the tornadoes, 90% of the hurricanes, 99% of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100% of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.
We get Hollywood and Yosemite , thank you.
Additionally, 38% of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62% believe life is sacred unless we're discussing the war, the death penalty or gun laws, 44% say that evolution is only a theory, 53% that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61% of you believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties..
Finally, we're taking the good pot, too. You can have that dirt weed they grow in Mexico .
Peace out."

Frozen...

Bryan Burnett | 18:05 UK time, Monday, 3 November 2008

gordon.jpgDespite a team outing to the Show at the weekend I have not been enjoying my food today. I can't touch ice cream, hot drinks make me wince and sticky toffees are off the menu. It's toothache. I nipped out to the dentist for some treatment this afternoon and after filling the hole she assured me that the numb feeling in my mouth will have worn off by 6pm. It's now 6:08 and I can still only talk out of one side of the mouth. Should be an interesting show...

Next Week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 15:34 UK time, Saturday, 1 November 2008

Thanks for another great week of shows. The 'occupations' theme brought in some laugh out loud suggestions and the unforgettable 'first singles' show allowed me the thrill of playing Nina and Frederic for the first (and possibly the last) time. Not something I will forget in a hurry. Here are the themes for this week. As always leave a comment on the blog, send me an e-mail or phone and text lines will be open during the show...

barack.jpgMonday
Huffs, puffs and sighs - In other words, songs that include human vocal expressions and sounds. I will also accept grunts, heavy breathing and even a burp if you can find one...

Tuesday
American Cities & States - It's the day of the 2008 US Presidential Election so tonight we'll celebrate America in song. It's also a chance for you to put the thinking cap on and see if there are any presidential anthems which might fit in tonight...

Wednesday
Large sizes - Songs about big, tall and large things is the theme tonight, so it's only fair that tomorrow night's theme is...

Thursday
Small sizes - Tracks about all things small, short & little. Send in your tiny tracks on e-mail or leave a comment below...
