Next Week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 15:34 UK time, Saturday, 1 November 2008

Thanks for another great week of shows. The 'occupations' theme brought in some laugh out loud suggestions and the unforgettable 'first singles' show allowed me the thrill of playing Nina and Frederic for the first (and possibly the last) time. Not something I will forget in a hurry. Here are the themes for this week. As always leave a comment on the blog, send me an e-mail or phone and text lines will be open during the show...

barack.jpgMonday
Huffs, puffs and sighs - In other words, songs that include human vocal expressions and sounds. I will also accept grunts, heavy breathing and even a burp if you can find one...

Tuesday
American Cities & States - It's the day of the 2008 US Presidential Election so tonight we'll celebrate America in song. It's also a chance for you to put the thinking cap on and see if there are any presidential anthems which might fit in tonight...

Wednesday
Large sizes - Songs about big, tall and large things is the theme tonight, so it's only fair that tomorrow night's theme is...

Thursday
Small sizes - Tracks about all things small, short & little. Send in your tiny tracks on e-mail or leave a comment below...

Looking for a burp - Canyons of your mind - B side of the Urban Spaceman by the Bonzo Dog DooDah Band. (I don't think you'll play it though) It's also got a bit of heavy breathing too.

Ian Anderson interprets J.S. Bach, playing the flute while simultaneously making weird and and wonderful noises.

I saw Alex perform this song in Glasgow in 1970 (or 71) with a pick-up band including ex-Soul Band drummer George McGowan and others who had been with him in Hamburg. The unexpected humour in the chorus was well received.

I think he was still doing Hair at that time but shortly after he re-launched his career with Tear Gas.

Would Strummer yelping in London calling count for Mondays theme?

  • Comment number 9.

Oh, how I searched for this week, and then thought 'Dammit, man, just pick one that you really like for each, and be done with it!'
So, I tried, and here they are.

    T

    OR
Blue Moon of Kentucky - Bill Monroe & his Bluegrass Boys///Elvis Presley....you decide

    W

Big Muff - John Martyn..... nah, there's no way you could. It's over six minutes long! So, instead, I suggest:-
Big Bird - Eddie Floyd....you really ought to, it's that good

    T

Wee Tom - Lord Rockingham XI
    Tiny Tears - Tindersticks
Little Green Bag - George Baker Selection

    And that's that!
    Thank you.

  • Comment number 10.

Hey Mike T - Big Bird was played before and you are absolutely right - its a great track, would be great to hear that on again! I am pretty sure it is a tribute Otis Redding?

  • Comment number 11.

For the States theme I think a mega choice would be 'Delaware' by Perry Como as it lists tons of States! Great fun song!

I have, of course, submitted a complete list of songs relating to all 50 states plus a few of the major cities - I tried to blog it here but it broke the 大象传媒... :-)

  • Comment number 12.

  • Comment number 14.

    Monday :

Madonna Justify My Love or is it too raunchy for GIO?

  • Comment number 15.

    Hi All

Just read a review of what surely must be a "must " for all GIO regulars or a good xmas suggestion for better halves to get us; Hang The DJ by Angus Cargill - An Alternative Book of Music Lists.

Great quote from one of the reluctant contributors; Lists are for facists and shoppers not anarchists and rockers!

    Heres to a good week.

  • Comment number 34.

    EC #22
Just for the record I was not by an means intimating any list makers on the blog are facists or shoppers I was merely quoting a topical reference ;-)

I am also in favour of a bit of "Justify My Love" for tonights theme, failing this it has to be "Shes Out of My Life" by Michael Jackson which I know is a favourite of BB's.

  • Comment number 39.

If anyone wants to cover it at least there will be no issues regarding copyright.

  • Comment number 40.

    Hello!

    Monday

"A Day in the life" by the beatles. The macca bit has some panting in it after "looking up, I noticed I was late".

    Tuesday

This made me think of Sufjan Stevens and his 50 states project (he intends/intended writing an album about each state). He's done two so far, Michigan and Illinoise so he'd better get cracking if he is going to actually finish it. I'm a big fan of Sufjan but most of his best songs are really long and probably not fitting for the show so I'll go for:

"Nutbush city limits" by Ike and Tina Turner

    Wednesday

The first thing that popped into my head was "Moby Dick" by Led Zepplin but I think I'd rather second Danielle's "Gigantic" by The Pixies instead.

    Thursday

    Danny Kaye's "Inchworm"

    Regards,
    Mr. Chops, The Dwarf

  • Comment number 41.

    Tuesday:

    Steve Earle - Telephone Road

    Billy Joel - Allentown

Steve Forbert - Miss the Mississippi and You

Gram Parsons - Street of Baltimore, Hickory Wind.

Bob Seger - Get Out of Denver

John Mellencamp - To Washington (an anti-Bush song)...or Pink Houses (Ain't That America)

Bruce Springsteen - My Oklahoma Home

    Marty Robbins - El Paso

    Ray Charles - Georgia

Not Ready To Make Nice - Dixie Chicks (about all the anti-Bush hoo ha)

Bee Gees - New York Mining Disaster 1941

  • Comment number 42.

Re posts 14 & 34, Justify My Love has been played on GIO, for the "Get It On" theme a few months ago.

I remember it because I'm still traumatised from that show by the thought that people out there are getting it on to Steamy Windows, but each to their own.

  • Comment number 43.

I might as well get this in before someone else, who flies a plane, does:

Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsborough - Je T'aime Moi Non Plus

  • Comment number 44.

    JanInGlasgow,
I would have preferred Tony Joe White's rendition.
Alas, I am responsible for your distress.
In order to spare you any horrific flashbacks, I hereby promise not to request it again.

  • Comment number 45.

Another one for either Wed or Thurs

Long Tall Sally- Little Richard. If Little Richard was born in Scotland i don't think he would have made it to the big time. Instead of being known as Little Richard, he would have been called Wee Dick, not quite so appealing to the masses.

  • Comment number 46.

    Tuesday
Dakota by The Stereophonics and I'll second DC on More Than A Feeling. Has a better power ballad ever been written?

    Thursday
In The Wee Small Hours of The Morning - Frank Sinatra.

  • Comment number 47.

Tuesday - there must be enough for a week of get it on with this theme. Some great suggestions already, esp Danielle from Canada. What about The Only Living Boy in New York, either S+G original or EBTG version. Or Mississippi Goddam by Nina Simone. Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Synyrd, Georgia on my mind - Ray Charles, Stuck inside of mobile - Mr D...gonna be a great night. But is a change a-gonna come?

  • Comment number 48.

    Sighs:

Say What You Want - Texas

I'm surprised no one else mentioned it!

Good call from Canadian Danielle about the Chakachas' Jungle Fever.
I'll see you that and raise you 'Coming and Going' by the Ray Brown Orchestra.

Here's one for your Thursday too:
Little Queenie - Bill Black's Combo

  • Comment number 49.

Scotch-git, as I said, each to their own, although I think that it being the Tina Turner version had a lot to do with it.

Adam From Rio, I have gone for Dakota for Tuesday as well, mainly to try to reintroduce discussion the theme suggestion of songs where the title doesn't appear in the lyrics.

  • Comment number 50.

    Wednesday

    Big Country - Big Country

Jersey Girl - Tom Waits or Bruce Springsteen

    Growing Up - Bruce Springsteen
    Great Southern Land - Icehouse
Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell
Big Girls Don't Cry - Four Seasons (or was it Franki Valli and the...)

    Thursday:
    Tiny dancer - Elton John
All the Small Things - Blink 182

and that's enough as like last week work is intruding into my social life far too much.

  • Comment number 54.

I always thought Little Richard should have done Big Log.

  • Comment number 55.

    Monday
The SIGHS Of a Cow- The Wonderstuff

  • Comment number 56.

My word - I see you lot are back chatting, being nice and making lists! Tsk tsk.

Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime (burping into a demijohn, I think)

Elastica - Line Up - the drummer making horrible burp noises. Yuk.

Little Steven - I AM A Patriot ("I aint no democratic, i aint no Republican")

Lou Reed - The Day John Kennedy Died.

  • Comment number 61.

Norrie #60, you got me wondering about working with Presidents names. Off the top of my head (because I'm supposed to be working, like many on this blog I suppose!) we could have (Dinah) Washington, (Bryan) Adams, Jefferson (Airship), Jackson (Browne), (George) Harrison, (R Dean) Taylor, (Eddie) Grant, (Isaac) Hayes, (Jackie) Wilson and of course (Nut) Bush (City Limits).

Come on guys, there's another 31 artists to be suggested here! What about this for another theme Bryan?

Bernie Williams - Ever Again brilliant track, loads of whoops.

    and of course....

The Mixtures - The Pushbike Song

  • Comment number 65.

    Sighs/Noises Theme:

Puff The Magic Dragon - The Seekers
Body Language - Queen (loads of ooh's and aah's in it)
Green Jelly - Three Little Pigs

  • Comment number 66.

I was in danger of creating a huge list around Tuesday's American theme, so thought of a theme within a theme, so my suggestions are associated with the candidates home states
Sen. Obama - Razzle dazzle them - from Chicago the musical ( not that i wish to comment on American politics)
Sen McCain - By the time I get to Pheonix - Bobby Goldsboro
Sen. Palin - Anchorage - Michelle Shocked
Sen.Biden - not a lot of options here Delaware has been suggested previously on the blog.
    Keeping the American theme going

If we're counting lyrics with references to presidents, what about Model Worker by Magazine? Originally references Carter on the album version and changed to Reagan on the Live version a year later.

"I've got no worried bout the enemy, coz i know that Carter will look after me"

EC my lists are stealth lists - drop them in over a few posts.....anyway I think there must be about four hundred in the lists of states, town etc.

Jim #67, there were two Harrisons, so the other could have been the Travelling Wilburys featuring Danny Harrison in a tribute to his dad.

There were also two Roosevelts, so we could include Roosevelt Sykes.

Of course there are two Bush presidents, and the current one is definitely a nutter so my Ike & tina suggestion stands.

There was also another Adams (Quincy) so Bryan could be the artist here.

I was stuck for the last president (unless we include Pink Floyd's "Have a cigar") until I thought of "Misty" as played for me by CLINT ON that film of the same name........

    I think that's the lot!

Hey DC good suggestions. I did leave out a couple of duplicates as you said and I couldn't really think of anything much for Clinton apart from songs mentioning cigars... Best not go there eh?

Cannot help but stick my oar in:

    George Clinton - Loopzilla.

    Monday

Drive In Saturday - David Bowie
"She鈥檇 SIGH like Twig the wonder kid"
On one chorus the word sigh is actually sung in a sighing voice.

    Mr Blue Sky - ELO
A bit of huffing and puffing after the "running down the avenue" line.

Monday:'The Yawning Man' from Tom Thumb

    Tuesday:'Memphis Tennessee,Chuck Berry

Wednesday:John Wayne Is Big Leggy,Haysey Fantayzee

    Thursday:
If you thought Nina and Frederic was bad

    Jim, DC,
What about Bluegrass fiddler Clinton Gregory?

  • Comment number 81.

Another band famed for their use of "saucey" breathing are Depeche Mode. Any one of "I Want You Now", "Halo" or Personal Jesus" would be great

  • Comment number 82.

Scotch - I was trying to make the list purely about the presidents' surnames in the title of the song... :-) But these are good suggestions.

  • Comment number 83.

"She Bop" by Cyndi Lauper is a great heavy breathing song, plus it gets bonus points cos it's one of those you innocently sang along with as a kid and then hear as an adult and discover it was actually completely dirty.

Clinton Ford is a two-for-one - thrill to his hit single of yesteryear "Fanlight Fanny"

  • Comment number 85.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for playing Jeff Buckley. I've added him to many a list and this is the first I've heard him played. I actually had to stop working and just listen to that one - Amazing!

  • Comment number 86.

Danielle - are you self-employed or something? Nobody standing over you cracking the whip? I get away with all this frivolity ONLY because I am the boss! LOL

  • Comment number 87.

Jim - Being the boss definitely has its benefits! I don't think I'll ever be able to work for another again. It's this show that keeps me glued to my computer working - for a couple of hours anyway!

  • Comment number 88.

Cue controversy......I do like Jeff Buckley and I have most of all if not all his cd's....but ~I think that version of Hallelujah is incredibly overrated. Cue hate mail!

Looking forwrad to Leonard at the Armadilo on Wed!

  • Comment number 89.

Ah well if you're a Leonard fan then you have absolutely no taste in music! Just about everything he has ever done (one or two fantastic exceptions...) are even sadder that Old Shep or Puff The Magic Dragon! LOL

It's OK Danielle - I think I've just covered for you...

    U.S. States for Tuesday:

"Private Idaho" -- the B-52's (we haven't had any Idaho suggestions yet, and this is a great song!)

"Carolina in My Mind" -- James Taylor (I am required by law to suggest that one cos it's about my home state)

And a good city one we haven't had suggested yet:

"Lubbock or Leave It" -- Dixie Chicks

    Rich in North Carolina

    Ouch that hurt Jim :o(

Norrie - and just when I thought we were becoming friends...
I enjoy the original, but prefer Buckley's version (I think I hear the Mounties knocking at my door to banish me from the country now). But hey, I like the Flaming Lips, so I don't know if my musical tastes can be trusted.
    Enjoy the show on Wednesday!

  • Comment number 93.

Norrie - just kidding! (sort of...)

  • Comment number 94.

    Thanks Jim!

  • Comment number 95.

    Nae bother!

  • Comment number 96.

Thanks Danielle...to be honest I put that on very much tongue in cheek......I do love Jeff Buckley! I'm a big laughing Lennie fan but for me the great cover versions are by John Cale and k d lang.

Thanks as ever for your nice message!

  • Comment number 97.

    Norriemac,
