Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 12:11 UK time, Saturday, 29 November 2008

Next week on Get It On we're embarking on the four nations challenge which was suggested by Jim In Erskine. The themes are very simple. We'll be playing home-grown artists, local heroes and songs connected to each country. At the end of the week we'll have a chance to reflect on which country has produced the most culturally rich playlist.passport.jpg
Monday - Northern Ireland/Ireland
Tuesday - England
Wednesday - Wales
Thursday - Scotland

    WEDNESDAY:

The Darling Buds: "Shame on You" or "It's All Up To You"

(I've been waiting for a theme that would let me ask for my favorite Welsh band!)

Thanks for doing such a great program -- it makes afternoons at the office much less painful!

    Rich in North Carolina

PS. Please try to work last week's hilarious Slits track into every show.

    Get your hankies ready.......

  • Comment number 5.

    Scotland:
Scotland Yet by (the late, great) Davy Steele
The Galloway Hills by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band

    Tam

  • Comment number 6.

and of course My Big Kilmarnock Bunnet by the Alexander Brothers

  • Comment number 7.

or should that be Burnett ?

  • Comment number 8.

Is it too late to scrap this theme?

The suggestions so far are about as culturally rich as Russell Brand.

    .

  • Comment number 9.

#8 Glen - thanks for that constructive comment.

Each to there own but I have checked my list #1 again and stick by it.

  • Comment number 18.

It's turning into some kind of nightmarish Eurovision Song Contest.

  • Comment number 19.

I disagree - loads of good stuff has been suggested. I think it will be a great week!

  • Comment number 20.

    IRELAND/N.IRELAND:

"Old Town" - Phil Lynott or The Corrs

    ENGLAND:
The Albion Band - "Sea of Sorrow" (or Poor Old Horse...though possibly a bit too much of a dirge if my memory is right)

I like the Bill Bailey "Unisex Chipshop" idea.

    WALES:
    "No Matter What" by Badfinger

    SCOTLAND:
"Look Over The Hill And Far Away" by The Humblebums

"Sunset Hymn" - Emily Smith (yet another chance to request this lovely song...maybe lucky this time)

  • Comment number 21.

Glenmiller - If it is such a nightmare then switch off and do not contribute to the blog!

  • Comment number 22.

Most radios have a nice big easily-pressed off switch.

  • Comment number 23.

Hey! Glen's entitled to his opinion too.

Never mind Glen, at least nobody's requested "When an old cricketer leaves the crease" for England...........yet.

  • Comment number 24.

Yes absolutely he is. He is also entitled to switch off! :-)

  • Comment number 25.

AFR you are right, and normally Glen's posts are witty and he suggests some good stuff. But the criticism of this week sems a bit random - I dont see the point just saying all this is rubbish without saying why and making some better suggestions?

    Anyway more to the point...

Bonnie Tyler - Its A Heartache
    Chas n Dave - Rabbit
Dana - All Kind of Everything
Fran and Anna - The Noo

There that should cheer everyone up. Who says I'm grumpy now!

  • Comment number 26.

DOH! Norrie - Dana was a Eurovision entrant in 1970 I think. Brilliant song too! :-)

  • Comment number 27.

Yes she was. My Uncle was dating her at the time. How is that for trivia....not as good as brother in a top Canadian band I grant you.

  • Comment number 28.

It was my cousin in the band in Canada, and I have had other cousing in other bands - as it happens my whole family have been musical. My mum was a pianist with an orchestra, and my grandfather (from whom we all got our musical genes) was a conductor (not of a bus! LOL)

I remember really fancying Dana... But I should... er... stay focused!

  • Comment number 29.

    Ireland

Nothing Compares To You - Sinead O'Connor
    Irresistible - The Corrs
Finnegan's Wake or Dirty Old Town - The Dubliners and The Pogues

Mellow Yellow or Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan
    Boom Bang-a-Bang - Lulu (Eurovision winner 1969)

I just LOVE Eurovision and never miss it, I felt I needed to include all my fave Euro hits. :-)

  • Comment number 30.

In all that excitement (LOL) I forgot to add Toyah Wilcox - I Want To Be Free or It's A Mystery for the England night

  • Comment number 31.

Hey JanFromRuglin - good list! Did you know that Steve Hillage's 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' could also be played on Scotland night as it was written by Donovan? He hails from Maryhill originally! Great guy - met him quite a few times when he has played here. He's over here at the moment, I think - no I am not giving anybody his moby number! He still thinks of himself as a Glaswegian. I like that.

  • Comment number 32.

I second Toyah - how about something a bit earlier though? Danced or Ieya?

  • Comment number 33.

I am not familiar with those tracks Norrie. I need to look them up

  • Comment number 34.

Jan - from 79/80 just before she broke into the mainstream. Its funny how I thought she was great at the time, check out Danced live on OGWT - of its time or what!

  • Comment number 35.

Also a good chance to get the Sisters of Mercy on again - how about Marian?

  • Comment number 36.

Thanks for the link Norrie :-). Just watched, you are right about its 'time' :-)

  • Comment number 37.

Jan I have got way more than that up my sleeve but a fear of the GIO board backlash prevents me from suggesting them!

  • Comment number 38.

Norrie - go for it! Your stuff is always good. :-)

  • Comment number 39.

Dont temp me Jim! A theme along the lines of "of its time" would be good, might not make good radio though!

  • Comment number 40.

Just don't ask for 'In The Mood'...

  • Comment number 41.

Norrie, this is a 'chat room' really. An open board to request and say what you like on musical tastes. I am not that musically orientated and I am humbled by the extent of your knowledge and JimFraeErskine's. I see the songs listed and check them out on youtube. So, please, list away :-)

  • Comment number 42.

Got some great suggestions already, so here's mine.

N Ireland/Ireland: "Burn Baby Burn" by Ash
Scotland: "Iceblink Luck" by the Cocteau Twins or "Little Discourage" by Idlewild
Wales: "Faster" by The Manic Street Preachers
England: "Bizzare Love Triangle" by the mighty New Order.

  • Comment number 43.

SG - the North Sea certainly fits the "grey" bill tonight.

Come on now JFE, just because you got your way with the theme for the week don't get all bent out of shape if someone airs an opinion.

    Anyway, I digress.

    Some tunes for this week.

Northern Ireland - National Express - The Divine Comedy
England - Meet me on the corner - Lindisfarne
    Wales - 68 Guns - The Alarm
Scotland - Broken Down Angel - Nazareth
Working for the Yankee Dollar - The Skids

  • Comment number 44.

EC - I retain my shape. It's a good theme and that's that. If someone doesn't like it they are fully welcome not to listen or participate - but simply slagging it off is not helpfull. That is ALL I am saying.

I am looking forward to a great week of shows.

  • Comment number 45.

    Re: Trivia
My cousins in Donegal went to school with the Brennans. Maybe someone will request Enya. (But it won't be me).

    MONDAY

'The Arrival of the Queen of Sheeba to Galway' - De Dannan

The band appear to have forgotten the words, but it's a rerr wee tune. Pure dead cultural. :-D

Let's cut Glen some slack. It's pretty obvious the Slits have tipped him over the edge.

  • Comment number 46.

Hi Scotch, how you doing? You are home early for a Saturday night....

  • Comment number 47.

    Monday - Ireland

    The Frames - Falling Slowly
Damien Rice - The Blower's Daughter
My Bloody Valentine - You Made Me Realise
    Ash - Girl From Mars

    Tuesday - England

    Nick Drake - Pink Moon
    The Wedding Present - Corduroy
    Gomez - Whippin' Piccadilly
The La's - There She Goes

    Wednesday - Wales

Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth
    Jem - They
Super Furry Animals - The Gift That Keeps On Giving

    Thursday - Scotland

    Frightened Rabbit - The Greys
Mogwai - Hunted By A Freak
    Teenage Fanclub - Star Sign
Jesus and Mary Chain - Head On

  • Comment number 48.

    Jan fae Ruglin,
    I'm very well, thank you.
Were you up watching all those Eurovision
    nights you have on tape?

  • Comment number 49.

    NEWSFLASH

Saint Andrew and The Rare Wee Helps will perform all the songs from his hit album 'The Word on the Pavey' at the City Halls, Candleriggs on Tuesday, January 27th. at 18:00. (strange time for a gig, but there it is).

My latest info is that there are only thirty tickets still available. So, there is NO TIME TO LOSE !!

  • Comment number 50.

Not an easy theme this week.

    Ireland
    The Voyage - Christy Moore
    Dreams - The Cranberries

I remember Paddy McGinty's goat by Val Doonican was a childhood favourite.

    England
Fog on the Tyne - Lindisfarne
    Stainsby girls - Chris Rea

    Wales
Tom Jones & Shirley Bassey are the obvious choices. Someone also suggested Bonnie Tyler, though my suggestion would be Lost in France

    Scotland
    Three suggestions from my hometown
Mother Glasgow - Hue and Cry
    Raintown - Deacon Blue
Tinsletown in the rain - The Blue Nile

I can't resist suggesting something from the folk genre given the theme

Either Bennachie or Barnyards O Delgaty by the Old Blind Dogs

    Jim

  • Comment number 51.

    N. Ireland/ Ireland,

No time to do a list for the week so here's my suggestions for Monday:

    Swamp - That Petrol Emotion
The Sun Does Rise - Dolores O'Riordan & Jah Wobble
Jump in the River/ I Want Your(Hands on me) - Sinead
    O'Connor
    Get Over You - Undertones
    Gotta Gettaway - SLF

Was also going to suggest Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphy's but just found out they are American. DOH!

  • Comment number 52.

    JFE: Aren't Simple Minds Scottish?

  • Comment number 53.

    Hi all
I think we should all remember the team are producing a show to attract new listeners as well as holding the attention of regulars...If it was that easy we would all be doing it wouldn't we?!

    Anyway....Monday;

JJ72 - Snow (brilliant band sadly no longer together but I was lucky enough to see them play at the 100 Club and they were amazing)
    Sultans Of Ping - Michiko
Cousteau - Last Good Day of The Year (again a band sadly no longer together but remain a firm favourite for me)

    Maria

  • Comment number 54.

    TUESDAY

    'Lah-di-dah' - Jake Thackray
    Very funny, very English

'England's Glory' - Ian Dury and the Blockheads
    A blast

'Oh England My Lionheart' - Kate Bush
    Be still, my foolish heart

    'England 2 Colombia 0' - Kirsty MacColl
    I miss Kirsty

  • Comment number 55.

    Monday:

    'Raglan Road' - Sinead O'Connor
    'Kite' - U2
    'Run' - Snow Patrol
    'Ballerina' - Van the Man

Please, no goats from Val. That would be worse than Puff the Magic Dragon

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 56.

    Val Doonican rocks !!

Howzabout 'The Jarvey was a Leprechaun'

  • Comment number 57.

    MONDAY

'Belle of Belfast City' - Van Morrison and the Chieftans

  • Comment number 58.

Ali - re #52 - Yes Simple Minds are definitely a Scottish band, but the song Belfast Child fits the Irish theme. The artist doesn't have to come from the country.

  • Comment number 59.

I would like to add my voice to those asking for Damain Rice and Blowers Daughter.

Ali and The Winters some SLF would be great - how about Alternative Ulster as a track which suits the theme?

DC I have never heard Sineads version of Raglan Road but I love Van and The Chieftans version of this so would like to hear either version.

Danielle - need to check out some of the artists on your list - quite a few new to me I must admit!

    Norrie

  • Comment number 60.

Scotch - sorry to be pedantic but so that the producers can locate it I think the track you are suggesting is I'll Tell Me Ma, and its a good call!

  • Comment number 61.

Can I second Aliandthewinters shout for Sinead O Connor, Jump In The River - something other than Nothing Compares 2U would be good!!

  • Comment number 62.

Mazz - I do know what you mean. Sinead has made loads of good records, but I for one always have a wee greit to Nothing compares 2 U as it is just such a phenomenally great track - and she was right to make the video all about the simple delivery of the song. Powerful stuff. One of the best videos ever, and proves the rule that simple is usually best.

  • Comment number 63.

North Sea Gas do a great version of Raglan Road as well. Still I must admit I love Van and the Chieftans.

  • Comment number 64.

    JFE
No doubt that Nothing Compares is a great track with an iconic video and it does hold a special place in my heart too (teenage heartbreak and anxiety was rife at that time for me) but what I love about GIO is the times you hear a song you're not expecting and you think, blimey, forgotten how good this is hence the Jump In The River backing....know what I mean? Guess thats why we are all here and blogging!!
    Maria

  • Comment number 65.

Yes I do agree. Either track will be amazing to hear, and I don't doubt for a second that she will be played.

  • Comment number 66.

I went on to listen to Jump In The River - had not heard it before - great track.

  • Comment number 67.

Norrie: I hope you find something you like!
There are quite a few suggestions on the blog that I need to check out myself. I'm looking forward to it!

  • Comment number 68.

Me too - tons of great stuff has been suggested!

  • Comment number 69.

    Glen Miller's still missing!!!

C'way Glen we need an outside opinion on the tracks listed so far.

Still think this week's not going to be good?

  • Comment number 70.

Yes if they play your Skids selection,
No if they play Divine Comedy

  • Comment number 71.

EC confused as always, my apologies.

Yes it is going to be good as opposed to yes its not going to be good.

I half heartedly try and cover up my Divine Comedy remark, the Skids are wonderful and deserve greater exposure.

  • Comment number 72.

Norrie - I was close to adding the Skids to my list but in the end left them out assuming others would ask for them anyway.

  • Comment number 73.

I think this week is a great theme week. Its an open ticket to having your tracks played.

  • Comment number 74.

JIm - one of these bands, get deeper than the singles, say Of One Skin, Arena, Happy To Be With You, Peaceful Times....brilliant!

  • Comment number 75.

For anyone lost in the fog of 4 nations, find the GIO lighters being waved in the air and find your way back. :-)

  • Comment number 76.

    Norrie #59

Sinead sings 'On Raglan Road' on the Pure Celtic Chillout album. It's by favourite version. Come on Bryan, play this track and educate the bloggers!

Paul Brady's 'The Island' is a song about Ireland itself and also well worth playing (also from the same album)

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 77.

Thanks DC, if its not played I will need to try and track that down.

  • Comment number 78.

As ever I love the range and diversity of blog posts and suggestions:

    #29 - JfR - Jesse Rae's "Over the sea" - a forgotten classic - happy to second!

#50 - JiGiffnock - Good call on Chris Rea and Blue Nile.

#51 - AaW- Flogging Molly was founded in Los Angeles by the Dublin-born Dave King. Eligible? I hope so as Isuggested "Paddy's lament".

Hope you all enjoyed St Andrew's Day.... and the quasi-public holiday tomorrow.

    Joe
    Linlithgow

  • Comment number 79.

    Jan fae Ruglin,
Y'all coming out to play Jan. 17th?

  • Comment number 80.

I searched for Jesse Rae's "Over the sea" and was pleased to find the original video on YouTube.

I remembered it being great.....but it isn't. Sorry JfG

    Joe

  • Comment number 81.

Hope she is Scotch - need someone tokeep us in order!

Did you see my post re Van and Chieftans #60?

  • Comment number 82.

Joe - Try the other tracks on the same album as Over The Sea by Jesse Rae - there are some very credible songs on that album.

  • Comment number 83.

Scotch, Can you define 'play' please...LOL

  • Comment number 84.

Steady Jan! Bad enough when Hoppo et al get going about Barbara.

  • Comment number 85.

Joe, I have his full Thistle album here (with that track), sorry I cannot forward it to you

  • Comment number 86.

Norrie, women always keep men in order LOL

  • Comment number 87.

Never a truer word etcetera etcetera...

  • Comment number 88.

    Monday

    Christy Moore - Voyage

Send out the search parties - Glen Miller's still missing.

  • Comment number 89.

    Norrie,
Forgive me for checking. I'm a pedant too!

    MONDAY #60 should read,

'I'll Tell Me Ma' - Van Morrison and the Chieftans

  • Comment number 90.

    Jan fae Ruglin,
I knew as soon as I hit 'Post Comment' the question would be misconstrued.

    I never learn !! :-D

  • Comment number 91.

Scotch ...I am sharp, not one to miss a sinker like that LOL :-)

  • Comment number 92.

    Re: #89 #60 should read #57

    J f R, stop giggling at once.

  • Comment number 93.

Jan - #91 - Sinker? Well I suppose it was one letter shy of something...

  • Comment number 94.

Oops, sorry JFE, post 91 should have said sitter and not sinker.

  • Comment number 95.

Jan - spoil a good joke, why don't you? LOL

  • Comment number 96.

Go on then - who will claim the century spot?

  • Comment number 97.

Scotch now now, me stop giggling?...can't do it

  • Comment number 98.

    Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

  • Comment number 99.

Stayin up late Jim just in case?
