The great of '78...
Last night's show was a great opportunity for us all to share memories of 1978 - the year Radio Scotland came on air. Alan from Hawick called to say that he remembers taking part in Tom Ferrie's quiz that year and winning 1st prize which was an Encyclopedia!
Rockin' Ralph had a great '78 and thanks to having pals at different universities he managed to see: "Thin Lizzy, The Quo,Rory Gallagher, John Martyn, The Undertones, Van Halen supporting Black Sabbath, Ian Dury, AC/DC, Eddie and the Hot Rods, The Police, The Jam, Dire Straits, Elvis Costello, Dave Edmunds, The Ramones, The Clash...and I still have some of the tickets and t-shirts. £1.75 to see Dire Straits at Coventry Uni and £1.50 to see AC/DC."
Jim from Erskine had his memories triggered by Radio Scotland's opening gala at the Kelvin Hall - "with special guests the chart topping group, Brotherhood of Man!!"
" We quite often played gigs in the main hall and even once in the massive arena used for the Christmas fair," said Jim.
As always food was uppermost in our minds last night. I loved the texter whose mother used to buy them Pot Noodles to watch Monkey as she thought it would be authentic. Ken Reid in North Berwick also had us all licking our lips in anticipation of a Vesta meal for one followed by Angel Delight and washed down with a bottle of Concorde. Ken also planned to dress up for the show. "In 1978 everyone was giving up flares but I held on to mine for as long as possible and only gave them up with a considerable fight...I also have my German air force coat, bought mail order through Exchange and Mart."
Elsewhere on the blog, Julie from Edinburgh shares some of her fashion secrets from back then. "I do remember platform shoes but, in 1978, punky, second hand shop finds were de rigeur. I remember going to see a band, possibly The Clash or The Buzzcocks, and I wore stilletto-heeled shoes, black drainpipe jeans (we couldn't buy them skinny enough and used to sew the seams to take them in ourselves) with my old Brownie uniform (the old, military-style, breast-pocketed, hand-me-down-from-older-sisters version) worn as a shirt!"
Sharon from Aberdeen e-mailed in to point out: "You can't have a party without Primula cheese on Ritz biscuits with a pickled onion in the middle! It came with chives or ham in it and you squeezed it out of the tube. How sophisticated!"

There are tickets still available, but sales are 'steady' according to the young man at the box-office. £12.50 per. Sounds like a bargain to me!
Norrie,
Fear not, it's in the main auditorium.

Friday the 9th I'll be going to singalonga Karen Dunbar.
Saturdays are best for me, but I can manage any evening that suits everyone else.
Should we all agree a date soon, or wait until nearer the time?

We had better wait until Wednesday or Thursday at least. Give everyone the opportunity to express an opinion.
