Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 09:00 UK time, Friday, 5 December 2008

Monday's night's show will be unlike any other show we've done. It will be seat of the pants stuff for everyone working on the programme but it should be good fun. I've had to call in two producers - One to look after the studio and another to be in the studio next door trying to find me the next song before the current one has come to an end. Large gins will be lined up at five past eight!studio.jpg Monday
Tonight's theme is....there is no theme. No chance to e-mail or blog in advance. All you have to do is tune in tonight at 6:10 and listen to the first song. As soon as you find out what it is then get in touch and suggest the song to follow. Each song must be connected to the one before. It promises to be our very own Manic Monday so don't miss it...

Tuesday
Tonight's theme is songs with 'pauses' in them. Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile) is a good example, but what else can you come up with. E-mail getiton@bbc.co.uk or why not leave a comment on Bryan's blog....

Wednesday
Help, Stop, Start or Kiss. It's one word song titles for tonight's theme. Get in touch by email, on the blog or why not call in or text during the show...

Thursday
Richard in Aberdeen wanted an excuse to ask for 'My Brother Jake' on Get It On so tonight's theme is just for him. It's songs about brothers, sister, mums, dads and other family members....

The first song choice on Monday will be interesting!

  • Comment number 2.

I'll be out of luck on Monday - if I can't get through on the phone, I can't type or text fast enough!!! Takes me about half an hour to send one message - the daughter despairs of me. Tuesdays' theme looks interesting - will have to get me thinkin' 'ead on for that one.

  • Comment number 3.

Its alright to miss one night Julie.
I'm sure JimFE will manage half the show on his own anyway.

  • Comment number 4.

    WEDNESDAY

    'We' - The Roches

    THURSDAY

    'We' - The Roches

  • Comment number 5.

Blood Brothers by Springsteen is truly a magnificent track.

  • Comment number 6.

Hey Adam - you're casting nasturtiums on my character again!!! I've only had about one track played this week yet i'm fine with that - some good stuff played from other folk's requests.

  • Comment number 7.

    Wednesday:
    'Mother' - Pink Floyd

    Thursday:
    'Mother' - Pink Floyd

This tune also starts with a sigh and a pause so it qualifies for Tuesday as well.

    Beat that S-G.....

    :-)

  • Comment number 8.

Hey Adam - I rose to the bait really quickly there didn't I - consider that your Christmas pressie from me :0)

  • Comment number 9.

And of course Springsteens own version of Fire uses a long pause to great effect.

    TUESDAY

    'Me Neither' - Brad Paisley

  • Comment number 12.

    Julie,
And a fine track too! I'd forgotten how good it is.

  • Comment number 13.

    DC,
How does one begin a song with a pause?!?

  • Comment number 14.

S-G #13, Listen to the track. There's a heavy sigh, then a pause, then the singing starts.

A great tune, one of my favourites of all time and a definite for Bryan to play next week (whatever day he likes!)

DC in (a rather wet) Cellardyke

  • Comment number 15.

    DC,
    Reminds me of my ex-wife.
There's a heavy sigh, then a pause, then the nagging starts.

  • Comment number 16.

    AFR

I thought it was Dundee that was supposed to be famous for the 3 J's (jam - jute - journalism)

Turns out GIO is headed the same way (Jim - Jan - Julie).

Sounds a bit like the characters out of some kids puppet show!!!!

  • Comment number 17.

  • Comment number 19.

Wednesday's going to be a busy one, I can tell. Could easily fill a week's worth just from my iTunes.

But we'd better have le Bragg's 'Sexuality' just to prove the GiO producers wrong about whineyness... it's a wonderfully joyful track.

  • Comment number 20.

#18. Funny that, considering I was a Cub Scout Leader for about 25 years. You missed out a Julie in the first line by the way :0) (God how i hate that song).

  • Comment number 21.

    I salute your reproachability!

  • Comment number 22.

    Scotch...and i salute your... ... ...oh I give up!

  • Comment number 23.

'Don't Give Up' - Willie Nelson and Sinead O'Connor

  • Comment number 24.

Must say that the Martyn Bennett track yesterday made Christmas shopping almost bearable.

  • Comment number 25.

I think the show will be over-run on Wed with good suggestions.

Springsteen - Badlands, Factory, Nebraska, Leah

    Gabriel - Biko

    Bowie - Seven, Fashion

    Danny Wilson - Kooks

    Boo Hewerdine - Greedy

    Morrisey - Boxers

    Edwin Starr - War

    Jam - Shopping

Lloyd Cole and Commotions - Paitence

  • Comment number 26.

Norrie: I just heard your comments on Tom Morton's show...I guess you could not be swayed to my way of thinking.

  • Comment number 27.

Oops. Sorry danielle. I heavily caveated by saying up front Jeff Buckley is great. I really do mean that!

  • Comment number 28.

As soon i sent it I did wonder if you would be listening!

  • Comment number 29.

Norrie: Just having a bit of fun. How was the wine?

  • Comment number 31.

Very nice thanks Danielle. More to follow this evening or its not Friday!

Heroin would be a good shout for Wed but most unlikely to get played!

  • Comment number 32.

I doubt it too - although it is a fantastic song!

  • Comment number 33.

I'm thinking of changing my blog name to MR ANGRY and it's all the fault of the GIO team.
I think Thursday's theme is a great suggestion. I made it in September but Richard in Aberdeen is getting all the credit.

It has reminded me, amongst others, to request My Fathers House, Springsteen. Mother, John Lennon

    Norrie, #31

Wine on Friday, heroin on Wednesday!!?!

What a hedonistic life you lead! :-D

  • Comment number 37.

@Jim - I think we *all* suggested that one.

The pauses one's gonna take some work, I think.

  • Comment number 38.

Just to say Bob Dylan, Edinburgh Playhouse. On sale now via ticketmaster, in case any bloggers Dylan minded.

  • Comment number 39.

    Norrie, #36

That was crass even by my abysmal standards.
    Sorry, man.

  • Comment number 42.

I'm still working on my list for next week, but I have a question to put to the long time GiO listeners. I was wondering if there has been a 'so nice, say it twice (or even thrice)' theme?

    Bang Bang - Nancy Sinatra
    Mary Mary - The Monkees
    July July - The Decemberists
Hey Hey, My My - Neil Young
Run Run Run - The Velvet Underground
Dance Dance Dance - The Beach Boys
    Money Money Money - ABBA

I'm sure there are some double/triple named bands out there too.

Great suggestion! 'The The' is the only group that immediately springs to mind, but I'm sure others will think of a few more!

  • Comment number 45.

Tuesday pauses: I agree with Captain R that this is going to be a challenge, perhaps something we've not been too used to on GIO of late. I've trawled my collection tonight to make up a list. Here it is:

'The road to home' - Amy Macdonald (at least there is a 30 second gap before her abbreviated rendition of 'Caledonia' on my iTunes download...)

'The End' - The Beatles, which, on their Abbey Road album, had a 20 second delay before they unfortunately played out forever with 'Her Majesty'

I also seem to recall 'Where do you go to my lovely' - Peter Sarstedt, as having a bit that caught the DJ out, but having listened to it again, it's no longer there. Shows what tricks your memory can play!

Other than that, I have found this to be a rather difficult challenge. I hope others have better luck than me!

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 46.

#36. Or "Cocaine" by Eric Clapton.

#38 Honestly Norrie...I wouldn't bother - saw him a couple of years ago at SECC, was really looking forward to it...thought, well, he's getting on a bit but his voice was never his strong point anyway - big mistake - one of the worst concerts I have ever been to. Couldn't make out what we were listening to half the time...a waste of (fairly hefty) ticket price. Some things are better left alone.

However...did I hear correctly somewhere that Simple Minds are playing Edinburgh Castle next July? - saw them in 1984 and have a feeling that they may still be worth seeing.

  • Comment number 47.

    TUESDAY: PAUSES:

"Novocaine for the Soul" - Eels

  • Comment number 48.

Great suggestion Julie! Have you heard their cover of Get Ur Freak On? I saw them do it live. It was a lot of fun!

  • Comment number 49.

DC - The The, of course. I'm glad you like the idea.

  • Comment number 50.

Tuesday -- "Love Shack" by the B-52's comes to a bit of a stop before Cindy yells "Tiiiiiiin roof! Rusted."

    Rich in North Carolina

  • Comment number 51.

#42 Danielle - good suggestion. I like these ones you have to think through and not google or check your playlist.

Dream Brother would be good for this week. Live at le bataclan preferably?

  • Comment number 52.

#46 Julie - totally agree. I have seen him 3 times and he has got progressively worse. Oh I could hear him allright the last time and that was the problem. But everyone says he was outstatning at the barrowlands so I am hoping......

Having said that my gig buddy Michael has refused to go this time!!! First gig refusal in 25 years or so!

  • Comment number 53.

There is a Springsteen song with a pause before he kicks into a great guitar solo. Its been driving me mad now for 24hours!

Anyway....Scotch I took no offense whatsoever to your remark! I know I'm touchy but not quite that bad yet!!!

    Danielle....

Morrissey - Ouija Board, Ouija Board!!

  • Comment number 54.

Norrie: I'm glad if you managed to see Bob even once when he sounded good - the gig I was at must have been one of the most disappointing evenings out I have ever had. The car broke down when we set off from Edinburgh, had to get a courtesy car from the garage, get through the traffic when we got to Glasgow...reached the venue and thought at least the support band was still on because we didn't recognise what we heard, got inside and realised it was Bob on stage. We were sitting there thinking "what on earth is he singing?" then were amazed when we realised it was "All Along The Watchtower"!!! I heard the Barrowlands was good too...wish I'd gone to that instead.

Dannielle - no I've not heard it - don't really know much about The Eels, except that one song. Must have a look at youtube.

#50 Rich, funnily enough I was at a Christmas party night last night...Love Shack was played and I noticed that pause. That's a great song - love the B-52s.

  • Comment number 55.

    More Pauses:

"TV is King" - The Tubes (I'd love this to be played...seldom-heard, great track with a definite stop-start towards the end)

"I am the resurrection" - Stone Roses

"Cold Sweat" - James Brown has several short pauses

  • Comment number 56.

Always back Julie when she asks for The Tubes, so I'll do it again.

Norrie #53, is it "Human Touch"?
Oh and the other day I was really surprised to hear you hadnt heard of Richard Hawley ( a fine singer songwriter from Sheffield). There are obviously gaps in your radio listening habits. Who do you tune into on a daily basis?

  • Comment number 57.

Norrie: Nice suggestion. You knew Mr. 'M' would/could make an appearance. He (and The Smiths) may not be 'the most played', but I think he could win the 'most applicable' award.

  • Comment number 58.

Quite right about last week themes, DC. Far too broad 鈥 bit like having 鈥淩ock songs鈥 or 鈥淪ongs with Love in the Title鈥. Mind you, they can be too narrow. Like the Human League night. The team realized too late that there were only four songs worth playing and had to use most of the show as a catch up night.
Pause theme is a good challenge. I suspect a lot of our regular google bloggers will be noticeable by their absence this week.
Though I suppose they鈥檒l have a field day for Thursday鈥..

  • Comment number 59.

    Tuesday - Pauses

The Young Rascals - Good Lovin' (end)
Led Zeppelin - Tangerine (fade out/pause at the beginning)
    The Breeders - Cannonball (mid-song)
    Fugazi - Waiting Room (beginning)
Yo La Tengo - Mr. Tough (end)

    Wednesday - One Word Titles

    Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats
    Rufus Wainwright - California
    Fleet Foxes - Mykonos
    Radiohead - Creep
    MGMT - Kids

    Thursday - Family

Cat Stevens - Father and Son
Harry Chapin - Cat's In The Cradle (lyrical content)
    Night Ranger - Sister Christian
The Brand New Heavies - Brother Sister
Damien Rice - The Blower's Daughter

  • Comment number 60.

    Yaaaaaayyy!!!!

Feeling quite pleased with myself for recalling a pause tune!

The Beatles' Helter Skelter has a double ending. It doesn't finish until Lennon cries out about the blisters on his fingers.

Moreover, it's a great song and definately worth a play

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 61.

#56 Adam - you are spot on it was Human Touch on my mind, and having listented again its only a wee mini pause. Not sure it will count, I really do apprecaite you putting me out of my misery though!

I am a bit of a creature of habit Adam, I do rely on my much more knowledgeable gig pal from my Uni days to point me in the direction of new music. catch the radio when I can, work gets in the way often. I can be quite stuck in my ways. So that may tell you why I like this blog...and the lists which annnoy some people but for folk like me its just opening doors to new sounds.

  • Comment number 62.

ps wish I had heard human Leaugue nighT!

  • Comment number 63.

Danielle - defo back MGMT and one of yours but different artist:

    Josh Ritter - California

Check him out, you will not be sorry!

  • Comment number 64.

Norrie: I'm not sorry! I have just been listening to Josh Ritter. I see that he has done a few Springsteen covers. I'm drawn to his 'Bright Smile' song. Really nice. Thanks. Are you familiar with Ray LaMontagne? I think you'd like him.

  • Comment number 65.

Danielle I know of him and one of the boys at work is a fan, I have not given him a fair hearing.....will now though.

As a total aside tonights CD is Trinity Sessions Revisited, inspired by you and the couple of Velvets tracks played recently. Oh and a bottle of......

"Mama Told Me Not To Come" - Three Dog Night

    "Mama" - Genesis

  • Comment number 74.

    Tuesday - Pauses

The track that sticks out in my mind is.......
    Shack Up, by Banbarra.
It has a false fade-out ending, and then kicks straight back into the funk, putting a right big grin on my face - every time.

    Wednesday

One word track titles? There are many to choose from, but one I'd love to hear on the radio and share with the nation is........
    Chains, by The Cookies.
Short, snappy and harmonious. A classic girl-group sound.

    Thursday

I may be revealing a camp side to my music taste here, but music has no boundaries, so..........
    Daddy, by Julie London.
That'll put a lightness in any loafer!

Hope you find the time for all or any.
    Thanks.

    Mike Tough

  • Comment number 75.

Actually, please forgive my awful grammar.

    I should have said...
    " That'll lighten any loafer!"

    Apologies.

  • Comment number 76.

RJ - I had thought of Grace Jones but she clashes with another gig. Living My Life is one of my favourite albums - can you tell me has she done anything worthwile after that? I have got a great anthology set as weel The Island Yeras.

  • Comment number 77.

Maybe Glen will know some songs with pauses, I am really struggling on that one.

Copying RJ with his style of suggestions I have a week of Bowie and Springsteen songs:

    Tuesday

Bowie - Breaking Glass live big pause before he comes back to sing another line right at the end. Doe the same with Fame live.

Springsteen - Human Touch live version not a great pause but best I can do.

Also thought of the bealtles and A Day In The Life, there is some silence before they come back with some gibberish but this may count more as a hidden track.

    Wed

Bowie - Changes, Fame, Seven, Star, Fashion, Sunday

Springsteen - Badlands, Factory, Jungleland, Trapped, Missing

    Thursday

Bowie - Bewlay Brothers, Hey Ma Get Papa (given to Ronson for his Slaughter album),
Sister Midnight (on Iggy Pops Idiot album, Bowie does it live and a re-written version called Red Money is on the Lodger album, Be My Wife.

Springsteen - Blood Brothers, My Fathers House, Jesus Was An Only Son, Frankie.

I saw Boo Hewerdine performing Be My Wife which seemed an odd choice for him but it was excellent.

  • Comment number 78.

    Tuesday

John Cage 4-33 A short pause followed by a longer one

    Mud - Tiger Feet - 4 pauses

  • Comment number 79.

    Mud - that's neat!

  • Comment number 80.

    Tuesday

Beach Boys - She's Not The Little Girl I Once Knew - A pause as wide as a surfer's smile

Hoppo it is something to do with the characters and internet lanuage or something. previous advice by technically minded people is to do your list in notepad and then copy.

I wonder if the wee Choplet has arrived?

Joe - K, great list liked the alpabetical approach. As well as the various Springsteen choices I would like to hear Joan As Policewoman. Hoppo choice of Highway Patrolman is great but probably too subtle as would be Used cars or The Wish.

    Oh Glenmiller...welcome back :0)

Aye, good to have you back GM.

Hope you can forgive Norrie. I think he was just lead astray by a bad crowd that week. He showed quite a bit of remorse in your absence, did he not Scottish Git?

Just for the fun of it what about:

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, the longest one word titled song ever I think, but on second thoughts, don't play it!!!!!

    Relative songs

Papa Was a Rolling Stone - Temptations
Dance with my father - Luther Vandross
    Motherless Child - O V Wright
Brass Buttons - Gram Parsons (remembering his mother's life)
Holocaust - Big Star (Alex Chilton describing the death of his girlfriend's mother)
Fortunate Son - John Fogerty (should be dedicated to Dubya)

and I really need to work on pauses because it's starting to annoy me.

    @Hoppolocos

We've just got to get Sexuality on for Wednesday.

GiO Producers: please bear in mind with this:

    1) It's a wonderfully joyful and positive track - completely not the Bragg stereotype

    2) See that guitar line? That's Johnny Marr that is, whose input transformed the song from its early demo.

    3) The video was directed by Phill Jupitus, who Billy discovered doing performance poetry (as Porky the Poet) and was working for the record company as a runner at the time. Ideal material for radio!

    4) See that backing vocal: That's Kirsty Maccoll that is. She's on the video too

CaptRamius you have me convinced, the case is overwhelming for it to be included, other posters take note and add your voices.

    Welcome back Glen.

Wonder who the blog bullies will be after this week.

The "Head Boy" has been a bit quiet so far this week. Themes not to his liking?

Let us decline the casting of aspersions.

    Let us, rather, pursue magnanimity.

Do the pauses in Elvis songs count....

Suspicious Minds fades out and then fades back in again.

There is a big pause, maybe he is trying to get back his breath, during American Trilogy.

Norrie, there's one of the issues, is a fade out, and fade back in, the same as a pause? I am struggling on this one and I know that tomorrow night I will be going 'of course, I remember that now'. Could be very annoying.

Is there not also a sigh and a pause at the start of Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah"?
