    MONDAY

'The Toilet-Seat Song' - Brad Paisley

You won't find it on any of his albums, but Nick Barraclough played it on his radio show more than once. Hilarious.
    If you can't find that,

    'I'm Still A Guy' - Brad Paisley

The album, '5th Gear', was released in 2007, but I didn't buy it until 2008. So it still counts. Right?

  • Comment number 2.

My favourite releases of 2008 were "The Bones of You" by Elbow and "The Quest" by Bryn Christopher. As usual, the GIO blog has been invaluable for telling me about all different sorts of music and the chat's been fun. Roll on 2009!

    TUESDAY

'On Saturday Afternoons in 1963' - Rickie Lee Jones

  • Comment number 4.

Discovered Damian Dempsey at this year's Wickerman Festival. Though I'm not a great Christy Moore fan, and he looked and sounded suspiciously like him, I thought he did a great set, mixing traditional folk song form with some lovely crucnchy 70s hard rock instrumentation. Please try and play "Ghosts of Overdoses" from his "Seize the Day" album, it's a belter.

Released this year was Half Man Half Biscuit's most amusing "CSI Ambleside" CD. Some great stuff on this as well, including "Lord Hereford's Knob", which passes the censorship test as it refers to a hill in the Welsh border country (I hope).

And as the entire Hawkwind back catalogue was re-released this year, I can only refer you to the magnificant "Lord of Light" from their "Doh Re Mi..." album. Get It On!

  • Comment number 5.

Todd Rundgren's album Arena is very good - especially for anyone nostalgic for the Tubes. Strike While The Iron Is Hot would be "good to hear."

Todd was heavily influenced by The Joe Gordon Folk Four and The Clyde Valley Stompers.

  • Comment number 6.

My best buy of 2008 is either Duffy's Rockferry or Iris Dement's Let the Mystery be. Bryan played "Our Town" by Iris a few months ago and I went WOW, who the diddlysquat is that! Best buy of an old album was Stiff Little Fingers' Inflammable Material. I was amazed how good it sounded after all these years. But I suppose my real find of the year has to be Get It On. You guys suggest and Bryan plays some great stuff (if too much Proclaimers and Smiths and not enough Jayhawks!!)

    Tuesday

When September ends - Green Day
November Rain - Guns n Roses
    New Years Day - U2
    1999 - Prince

    Wednesday

"let us know what you'll be playing at your doo"

If it's a tune for a "doo" then how about
Lieutenant Pigeon - Mouldy Old Dough
    Prince - When doves cry.
    Genesis - Pigeons

A very Happy and Prosperous New Year to all the GIO production team and bloggers where ever you may be.

  • Comment number 8.

    Best buy of 2008?
Colin Hay-Are You Lookin At Me?
Cherry Ghost album Thirst For Romance(in particular 4am) I was also introduced to The Eels this year when a blogger asked for Susan's House.I bought the album 'Meet The Eels'and I'm now hooked (pardon the pun)

    Tues.Wednesday Morning 3am-Simon And Garfunkel
    Valentines Day-Steve Earle
    New Working Day-Steve Forbert

Good Wishes to everyone for 2009.

    I salute your stompability!

  • Comment number 10.

I read with interest that Joe Gordon is now a clinical hypnotherapist.

If he'd had these skills in the old days he could have had unlimited chart success.

  • Comment number 11.

Does that mean his music can send you to sleep?
Surely it would be simpler to play anyfink by The Smiffs, innit.

  • Comment number 12.

Scotch - I utterly agree with you. An yon Morrissey chappie an aa. Hoots mon, innit.

  • Comment number 13.

    Monday - 2008 Favourites

Lucinda Williams - Little Honey - Favourite track her duet with Elvis Costello - Jailhouse Tears.

Seasick Steve - I Started off with Nothing (and I've Still Got Most of It Left) - Favourite Track - Walkin Man

Billy Bragg - M for Me

And (thanks to GIO) discovering that Dusty Springfield was very, very good. Breakfast in Bed or Spooky would be good.

    Monday

    * I heard Gone Gone Gone from the Robert Plant and Alison Krauss album on the Tom Morton show and loved it, so bought the album.
    * Feist - 1234 via iPod ads, and also Sesame Street
    * Oysterband - Fuse with the wonderful Eliza Carthy

    Via GiO
    * The Bonzos - The Intro and the Outro
    * Barclay James Harvest - Titles
    * Lindisfarne - Run for Home, which I remembered from childhood, but didn't know who it was
    * Sigur Ros - the entire album of Takk, via DfromCanada - thanks hen!
    * Simon and Garfunkel - Hazy Shade of Winter - I hadn't realised it was a cover
    * Lou Reed - Satellite of Love. Another one I half remember from childhood

Rediscovered tracks, while researching an 80s night I DJd for
    * Kylie - Can't Get Blue Monday Out of My Head - but then, I love a mashup
    * Human League - Louise
    * Strawberry Switchblade - Since Yesterday

    Rediscovered albums
    * Fleetwood Mac - Tango in the Night; when working as a student I tested reconditioned/repaired stereos for a Korean electronics company, so the intro to "Everywhere" is burned into my brain
    * Billy Bragg/Wilco - Mermaid Avenue. I'd heard the Bragg tracks, but the Wilco ones are good too.
    * Lou Reed - Transformer. Via Satellite of Love, above

    And finally
    * Stereophonics - Long Way Round, from the TV series. LWDown to be strict - also responsible for me discovering the most wonderful
    * Geoffrey Oryema - The River

    CaptainR #17,

Looks like we saved them some work for the New Year!

    DC

  • Comment number 21.

Hate his attitude, love his music Van Morrison - Soul from Keep It Simple was a good 2008 album for The Man.

Justin Currie - What Is Love For, came out at the tail end of 2007 and have listened to this album constantly since then.

New to me Richard Hawley, anything from Coles Corner would be great.

Great Re-issue - Jennifer Warnes Famous Blue Raincoat, great songs great album. How about her duet with the master himself on Joan of Arc.

Lots of others I could make a very very long list for Mondays theme!

  • Comment number 22.

ps Morrisseys two new tracks, That's How People Grow Up and All You Need Is Me, on his collection this year were excellent and bode well for the new album.

I also meant to include Tift Merritt Another Country, excellent album and Something To Me would be my choice.

    Norrie

  • Comment number 23.

Just this minute discovered Jack White - Christmas Time Will Soon Be Over. Very appropriate (and enjoyable).

  • Comment number 24.

    Monday

The top song of 2008 for me was Vampire Weekend's 'A-Punk'. It must have something to do with all of those, 'eh, eh, eh, eh's', being from Canada and all.
Some other artists that I enjoyed listening to were: Santogold, Fleet Foxes, MGMT and Lightspeed Champion.

    Tuesday

    July, July! - The Decemberists
    Pop Song 89 - REM
    Disco 2000 - Pulp
    1979 - Smashing Pumpkins

    Wednesday

    New Year's Eve:
What Are You Doing New Year's Eve - Rufus Wainwright
The New Year - Death Cab For Cutie
    Party:
    Party Hard - Andrew W.K.
Groove Is In The Heart - Deee-Lite
    Brick House - The Commodores
    1999 - Prince

Happy New Year to you all!

  • Comment number 25.

    Days and years:

I assume it is about specific days and years so for example Golden Years would not count?

I think Valetines Day as suggested by Joe is a brilliant track by Steve Earle, as is Springsteens song of the same name.

    Also

4th July, Asbury Park (Sandy) - Springsteen

    1972 - Josh Rouse

    1977 - The Clash

    1984 - David Bowie

1921 - The Who from Tommy, which of course also has the song Christmas.

Celtic New Year - Van Morrison

All good tracks, would be very pleasant to hear Josh Rouse though I must admit, but Sandy is a particular favourite of mine!

  • Comment number 27.

Joe - great suggestions. Funnily enough I bought Silk Degrees on CD this year, I remembered my older brother having the lp when it came out and was surprised how good it was, I dont know if he has done much else.....better google and find out, also I have not heard of Melody Gardot so will check that too.

Cardiff - yep absolutely fantastic show and hoping for a couple of trips this year for the new album, hope a tour is announced soon! I would like to hear Long Way Home from the Magic album.

    Cheers

  • Comment number 30.

    Hi all

One of my favourite new albums of this year was the soundtrack to ONCE - it is a truly beautiful album and a very endearing film. I know it was released in 2007 but I only just discovered it in 2008.

I would recommend it to all!

Oh and Norrie, great shout for Josh Rouse on dates night, he is not played enough!!

    Maria

  • Comment number 31.

Discovered this year, well GIO and the wonders of blogging. bands, well having become rather fed up with what was on offer in the past few years I have been happy to hear Frightened Rabbit, Glasvegas and from GIO Iris Dement and Lucinda Williams (nb country music can actually be very good, if only more of the good stuff was played rather then the boring crap that is usually offered up) Springsteen returning to form with 'Magic' and GIO reminding me of some old favourites an driving me mad when I think a theme is impossible and then the programme is full of tracks I know.

  • Comment number 32.

#28 Scotch - you dont want to know! With the next hurdle just up ahead as well!

Hope you arekeeping well - its great to see an artist like Iris DeMent getting so many shouts is it not!

    Norrie

  • Comment number 33.

Maria - Once is definitely in my top 5 movies of all time! Truly beautiful!!

HoppoLocos - I too discovered Frightened Rabbit this year. Thanks for the reminder. A great find indeed!

  • Comment number 34.

Isn't it great Danielle?! So glad someone agreed with me.

Oh and can I also thank Bryan for the encouragement to check out Weeds (both series and soundtrack), it has become a firm favourite at home, thanks BB!!

    Maria

  • Comment number 35.

Danielle / Maria - have you checked out the Swell Season album by Hansard and Irglova - it is superb as well. Have the soundtrack but have not seen the film so will need to check that out.

  • Comment number 36.

Thanks Norrie. I just added The Swell Season and The Frames to my library!
You really MUST see the movie, you will not be disappointed!

Maria - I find myself singing (well, that's what I call it) 'Little Houses' often. I like that so many different artists have covered the song.

I noticed that there are still a few bloggers missing from our GiO group. Come and check it out, you'll be glad you did and you may even get a recipe out of it:

  • Comment number 37.

Monday - Best Buy of 2008:
I bought quite a few new (to me) albums in 2008 but the two that stand out are -

1 - Boulders by Roy Wood, actually recorded in the 1960's but held back for many years by his then record company in case it interfered with sales of his other albums. Some of it has echoes of what was to become ELO when that project got started. I can recommend 'Songs Of Praise' or 'Nancy Sing Me A Song' from that brilliant album.

2 - Day And Age by The Killers. Brilliant album and I don't know what took me so long to get into them! 'Human' is the best new track of 2008 for me by far.

    Tuesday - Dates:
Loads to go for in this theme so I will just suggest a few of my favourite songs that fit the theme -

    January - Pilot
What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? - Diana Krall
    New Year's Day - U2
    When I'm Sixty-Four - The Beatles
What A Day That Was - Talking Heads
When Will I See You Again - The Three Degrees (one of their all-time best)
In The Year 2525 - Zager And Evans (a favourite with the GIO staff, apparently...)
    Calendar Girl - Neil Sedaka
What A Difference A Day Made - Bobby Darin (one of the best songs ever recorded)

    Wednesday - Party Songs:
Celebrate Good Times Come On! - Kool And The Gang (classic!)
    Tiger Feet - Mud
The Life Of The Party - The Jackson 5 (all ya gotta do is dance...!)
Music To Watch Girls By - Andy Williams
    The Party Song - Slave
    Praise You - Fatboy Slim
Party Hard - Pulp (superb and very underrated song)
My Party - Kings Of Leon (fantastic guitar-based partyness!)
Get The Party Started - Pink
I'm Happy Just To Dance With You - The Beatles
Popcorn - Hot Butter (what's to be said? Smiles all round when this is played!)

  • Comment number 38.

    Mon:
'The Way it is' - Nicole Atkins
Great voice, epic songs and looks gorgeous. I guess you need a beehive and a drug habit to get playlisted! 'Neptune City' was out late 2007 but I only saw her on Jools Holland this year.

'White Winter Hymnal' - Fleet Foxes (just beautiful)
'Time to Pretend' - MGMT (already sounds classic to me)
    'Oxford Comma' - Vampire Weekend
'Strange Times' - The Black Keys (another great bit of production by DJ Danger Mouse from Gnarls Barkley/Gorillaz)
'Tamacun' - Rodrigo y Gabriella (also from 2007 but a recent discovery online)

I think the Black Keys is the only one of the above that I actually bought on CD. My apologies to Woolworths and Zavvi!

  • Comment number 39.

#37 'The Year 2525' is a great shout.

    Tue:
'Today' - Smashing Pumpkins (or, if that doesn't count, '1979' but 'Today' should get played more)

'What's Another Year' - Shane McGowan (forget Johnny Logan's original - Shane's version is ace)

  • Comment number 40.

Coukd I add to tonights requests, slightly different in that it is a re-discovered band I loved forgot about and loved again. Cowboy Junkies either their cover of Sweet Jane, preferably from the Trinity revisisted Cd/DVD or Sun Comes Up Its Tuesady Morning.

  • Comment number 41.

    Tuesday - Dates:

Steve Forbert - "Grand Central Station, March 18, 1977".

Wyclef Jean - "Gone Till November".

Nouvelle Vague's cover of "Friday Night, Saturday Morning".

  • Comment number 42.

    Tuesday

Al Stewart - "Last Day of June 1934"
Blue Oyster Cult - "Then Came the Last Days of May"
Roy Harper - "These Last Days"

Sorry, I seem to have gone from one theme to another, but I suppose they fit roughly!

  • Comment number 43.

Have to say I thought that was a really great show - loads of diverse music.

Before I forget I want to nominate El Rayo x by David Lindley for the party music. I think Glen Miller nominated it before and I texteed in a few months ago about this track, I saw Jackson Browne and David Lindley perfom this at the Playhouse and it should get you on your feet! Its a great album as well. David Lindley has even worse fashion sense than me!

Cheers Norrie had considered it as a belated GIO Christmas track for You... thanks for Gates of the West, the cost living EP is just so special to me.

    Aw ra' best for 2009

  • Comment number 51.

    repeats, repeats.
That's all, I said that's all you get on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ these days!!

  • Comment number 52.

    completely agree Scotch.

  • Comment number 53.

Madmac - as a teenager the last Clash 7" up to about London calling I had to get was the Cost of Living ep. Of course long before online ordering and it took me ages to get it, I had no idea what was on it and was so chuffed when I finally tracked it down I couldnt believ how good it was!

Thanks for 5 years and best wishes to you as well!

Scotch - you going to Lost Soul Band tomorrow night?

  • Comment number 54.

    You can say that again.

  • Comment number 55.

    Re: #32
    Norrie,
It seems singers with very distinctive voices provoke polarised opinions; you love them or hate them. No middle ground.

Maybe there is a theme here. Singers you could not possibly mistake for someone else.

  • Comment number 56.

Ah cannae keep up wi' you young yins!

    Norrie,
Alas I have to work. Hoping for a day off on Sunday.

P.S. What is a Lost Soul Band?

  • Comment number 57.

Actually this is a good theme suggestion Scotch. Tom Waits would be one, or eh The Bee Gees!

I have seen Iris a few times and once in the GRCH it was terrible as she had the most awfull stage fright, I felt so sorry for her and I have always wondered if this is why she has seemed to semi-retire?

  • Comment number 58.

Scotch - worth checking out, I think you would like them

  • Comment number 59.

    Norrie,
The only time I saw Iris live was at GRCH when she was touring with John Prine. She seemed nervous that night too, but the audience were very forgiving. I think she's pure dead brilliant!

  • Comment number 60.

    Re: #58
    Interesting. I shall investigate further.
    Thank you!

    TUESDAY

'Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five' - Wings

A wee blast fae the past.

  • Comment number 62.

    Calendar Date songs

4th July, Asbury Park, Sandy / Independence Day / Valentine’s Day – Bruce Springsteen
    Independence Day – Aimee Mann
St Swithin’s Day – Billy Bragg
    1963 - New Order
    1979 – Smashing Pumpkins
    Paris 1919 – John Cale
Papa Was a Rolling Stone – Temptations (‘It was the third of September’)
Ode to Billie Joe – Bobbie Gentry (‘it was the third of June’)
39’ – Queen (the only track by them I can actually listen to and enjoy)
1952 Vincent Black Lightning – Richard Thompson
    January Song – Lindisfarne
    September Gurls – Big Star

  • Comment number 63.

The question marks have reappeared!!!!! They weren't there when I typed the songs in. Oh well, BTW!

  • Comment number 64.

Bryan - I enjoyed the show last night - good varied stuff.

For tonight, it would be great to hear Louisiana 1927 by Randy Newman. So many echoes of what happened again in 2005 - both in terms of the destruction and of the government not caring about poor (mainly black) people.

Or (if you want just over a minute of whimsy) what about Piano Tuner Song 2000 AD by Ivor Cutler. Another one for the theme of singers you could not possibly mistake for someone else. (#55)

And, finally, if you are allowing months (rather than dates) you could play Elbow two days in a row - August and September - their beautiful cover of the the the (!!) song.

This will probably be my last post of the year. Best wishes for 2009 to you and all the GIO team. I look forward to you brightening up next year for me as much as you did this year.

    Andy

  • Comment number 65.

    I salute your repeatability!

    Andy,
Will you be taking a skiin' doo to France?

Oops Upside Your Head - Gap Band

if I'm honest though you could also throw in some Status Quo 'Caroline', 'Down Down'. Don't you think that had they died in a plane crash about 76 / 77 they would be much mourned legends?

  • Comment number 68.

    No.

  • Comment number 69.

    I also say no.

But I have some party thoughts,

Southside Johnny & Asbury Jukes - We're Having A Party

    Elvis Costello - Party Party

david Gray - Babylon, Please Forgive Me

Mary Chapin Carpenter - Down at The Twist And Shout

I think those are good songs for a party.

    Others which might get suggested

Hi Ho Silver Lining, Holding OUt For A Hero, Dance Away, Temptation, Signed Sealed Delivered

A good last track for tonight would be

Mark Knopfler - Going Home (Local Hero)

  • Comment number 70.

It was just a thought, though the plane crash would have spared us so much.

  • Comment number 71.

Dr Feelgood I find goes down well at parties. 'Back in the Night' and 'Down to the Doctor's'

#70 Hoppo can I take it you are not a Lynrd Skynrd fan??

  • Comment number 73.

Norrie, what plane crashes have taken away they have also spared us. I have always thought that Lynrd Skynrd were okay, but never the great band people make out. If it's southern fried rock then I prefer the Allman Brothers. Mind you WTF is that crap Kid Rock (now there's a misnomer if I ever heard one) mash of Sweet Home Alabama and Werewolves of London.

    Tue:
Had to suggest 'June' by RJD2 then decided to cover the whole year. Hopefully you do allow months!

'January' - Pilot (original is just a bit too cheesy)
'February Stars' - Foo Fighters (nice ballad with rocking ending)
'Chick Habit' - April March (from Tarantino's Death Proof OST)
'Another Kaos Beyond Kaos' - Derrick May (only 50 secs, go on...)
    'June' - RJD2 feat. Copywrite
I know it's 6 mins and there's swearing in the first 30 seconds but it's one of my all time favourite tracks. Beats, lush instrumental part and a bit of rapping - right up my street.
    'July' - Low
    'August' - Rilo Kiley
'Wake Me Up When September Ends' - Green Day
    'October Song' - Amy Winehouse
'November Rain' - Guns N' Roses (if you can spare 9 mins!)
'Flowers in December' - Mazzy Star (gorgeous song)

#73 Yep, Kid Rock shows how far you can go without any obvious talent at all. Don't know that I'd wish a plane crash on anyone. But maybe the Kid's boat could sink in that video so it embarrasses him in front of those models. I'm sure the girls would be fine since they looked like they had their own buoyancy aids! ;)

Re #73 and #75 - Check out this version by the Dutch band, KidB:

Inexplicably, they have mashed up the translated lyrics with Una Paloma Blanca!

I came across it a few months ago whilet listening to a Frisian radio station online.

#76 Skynyrd, Zevon, King...? And half a ton of Edam by the sounds of it. What's Dutch for ginkin'?

  • Comment number 78.

Slope - the word is 'kut'. I'll get that past the profanity filter, I think... Trying now!

    woohoo! :-)

    WEDNESDAY:

One I should have included for Monday would be a good party track:

Kylie Auldist - "Community Service Announcement.

Thought there was something wrong with the radio there - couldn't hear any months mentioned during "Calendar Girl"... then I realised I only had my right earphone in :0)

    Jim,
I am stunned. Dean Friedman and those sock puppets should have taught me never to trust you, but I foolishly gave you the benefit of the doubt.
Mind you, the comments look hilarious.

Ha, yes, Julie, it can be fun listening to those old songs through headphones cos they were experimenting with stereo and sounds come from different sides. My favorite is listening to old Mamas & Papas songs cos it sounds like the men and the women are shouting at each other from opposite sides of the house.

    Hi to the GIO goodguys!

Great show last night, great to hear the listeners faves, diverse disnae do it justice.

Just wondering if the show will open or close tonight with the excellent 1984 ( Sexcrime) tonight. a real must have at some point anyways.

Howz about one or two of these.....

Aimee Mann - 4th of July

    Kurt Weill - September Song

The Cure - In between days

    The Clash -1977

New Order - 1963 ( a finer birth year vintage not to be found anytime last century!)

    Estelle - 1980.

The GardenParty - Tomorrow never comes

    Talk talk - Today

Aimee Mann would be marvellous to hear. She seems to fall between the musical cracks when requested. I dont think she has been played on GIO this year so it would be wonderful to hear. Can even send u the mp3 if required!

    kindest regards for 2009.

Listening away whilst eating olives and making a curry for the family. NB I never requested Pilot! Not my kind of stuff, but I'll forgive you if you play Big Star.

  • Comment number 90.

Hoop - I requested Pilot - brilliant song! So you can probably blame me.

  • Comment number 91.

    er, Hoppo... sorry!

  • Comment number 92.

Big sympathy for Miss Babs and her cooking incident. I have only injured a foot by accidentally trying to kick a doorframe into another timezone, it was that painful.

  • Comment number 93.

Jim, not a problem, I was overdoing the 'not my kind of stuff' in the hope of getting Big Star on.

  • Comment number 94.

Just as I got this down... guess what Simon & Garfunkel however April come she will maybe another time then.

  • Comment number 95.

#89 Pilot might have been me too. I knew they wouldn't play June by RJD2 so I did all months of the year and they were January. Not sure if that got read out?

Some of the songs made me switch off so I missed a few chunks of the show tonight. 'Yesterday' and Blunt are way too overplayed and Babs Dickson is just a bit too naff. Compensating for last night? Shame if they were, I really enjoyed Monday.

Anyway, Happy New Year to everyone.

  • Comment number 96.

I thought tonight's show was a really good balance. I liked the Barbara Dickson song - reminded me of the early 80's... But I have to say I cannot stand anything by James Blunt! What an annoying voice he has!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 97.

    WEDNESDAY

    'Burlesque' - Family

'Pick Up The Pieces' - Hudson Ford

'Psychomodo' - Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel

Have a great time tonight y'all.

A Guid New Year to you and your loved ones.

  • Comment number 98.

A Very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year to all bloggers.

As we'll still be churning out "Black Gold" through the bells tonight how about playing -

Beds are Burning (hope they're not) by Midnight Oil

    All the best for 2009

  • Comment number 99.

A few floor fillers for tonight's party -

Come on Aileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners
I will survive - Gloria Gaynor (for the handbag brigade)
I'm gonna be (500 miles) - The Proclaimers (a favourite of AFR)
Hi Ho Silver Lining - Jeff Beck (whatever happened to the Craw's Nest band?)
    YMCA - Village People
Please Stay - Cryin Shames (last chance saloon)

  • Comment number 100.

All quiet on the blogging front today! Thing about party tunes is that some of the best party tunes are the kind of stuff you would never listen to any other time, see #99 for I Will Survive and YMCA - must be fun on your platform / rig / whatever EC. In that vein though I could also add that you could play some Slade which always seems to get people dancing around.
