Roxy John comes up trumps
We hit an all time high last night. We got more texts,e-mails and calls than on any edition of Get It On. The playlist is now online so take a look and see if you can spot the 'connections' between the songs that formed last night's themes.
Roxy John, one of our regular listeners, managed to come up with a Roxy connection for every single song in the show!!! Here's what he came up with:
Diana Ross - Chain Reaction
Bryan Ferry had a song called 'Chain Reaction'
Al Green - Tired of Being Alone
Bryan Ferry recorded Al Green's Take Me To The River'
Roy Orbison - Only the Lonely
Roxy's Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay's post Roxy band The Explorers recorded Roy Orbison's 'It's Over'
The Only Ones - Another Girl Another Planet
Roxy Music's 'Ladytron' is about another girl from another planet
Lulu - Shout
Bryan Ferry's guitarist Neil Hubbard played with Lulu and can be heard on may Roxy/Ferry hits More Than This, Oh Yeah, Slave To Love, Avalon to name a few.
Ìý
Smokey Robinson - The Tears of a Clown
Bryan Ferry recorded Smokey's 'Tracks Of My Tears'
ABC - When Smokey Sings
Well did Martin Fry not rip off the Ferry look and sound quite a bit
Kirsty MacColl - There's a Man Works Down the Chip Shop
Bryan Ferry makes referance to a Newcastle chip shop called Mabel's in Roxy's 'Do The Strand'
Elvis Presley - If I Can Dream
Ferry has covered, Baby I Don't Care, Walk A Mile In My Shoes, Are You Lonesome Tonight, Girl Of My Best Friend & Don't Be Cruel
Dream Academy - Life in a Northern Town
Dream Acadamy bassist is the current Roxy Music bass player Guy Pratt and also co-wrote some stuff on a Ferry album. He met Dave Gilmour through Ferry and ended up playing bass with Pink Floyd too. My claim to fame is that I sat at a piano in a hotel after a Ferry show and played 'Run Like Hell' with Guy
Frank Sinatra - Mack the Knife
Ferry covered Sinatra's 'You Go To My Head'
Rod Stewart - The First Cut is the Deepest
The year after Ferry had an Grammy nomination for his album of '30s standards 'As Time Goes By' Rod Stewart decided to copy that formula 4 times over with his American song book albums. In Typical Ferry style, he simply moved on to something different instead of flogging an obviously winning formula
Scissor Sisters - Take Your Mama
Scissors Sisters debut album inner sleeve ripped off Roxy Music's For Your Pleasure inner sleeve. They also credited Fery on the 'Ta-da' album and they did a live cover version of 'Do The Strand'
Mamas and The Papas - Dream a Little Dream of Me
Both Bryan Ferry and The Mamas And Papas recorded Dobie Gray's 'The In Crowd'
The Who - Squeeze Box
Bryan Ferry wrote a song for Roger Daltry 'Going Strong' for the album 'Parting Should Be Painless (Ferry has never released his version)

At 10th Dec 2008, RoxyJohn wrote:#1 Thanks Adam, it's all just a bit of fun for me. I don't take it too seriously.
#2 There's a lot more than Street Life up here, you will see in my main post in the main blog I like loads of different artists and don't listen to BF/RM any more than many of the stuff I have at home.
#3 I happen to know lots about BF/RM as it is part of a job I do for them. I have done some work for them and and associated work for ´óÏó´«Ã½ etc. I have probably the biggest collection of Roxy records, memorabilia etc that I know of but despite that you would never know I was a fan if you came into my house as I don't have any of this on my walls etc, I don't wear music T-shirts as a rule (well a rule of my personal trainer wife telling me I am too fat for them)
#4 I did say in my main post that I had a link for MOST tracks, I am sure I can think of a Deacon Blue song related to BF/RM
You are right about the Newmark/Spenner thing on Beauty Stab, Phil Manzanera also plays on ABC's Abracadabra
#5 Nice one Glen, it made me laugh. Also it is worth noting that Andy Mackay wrote the music for the Rock Follies TV series in the '70s and there is a song there called 'Glen Miller Is Missing' on those albums and DVDs
I am sure as you say many people are tired of Bryan Ferry, myself included at times as like anyone with such a large body of work he has released some sub-standard stuff. He has just done a duet with Charles Aznavour on the new Duets album by CA, totally pointless distraction form Ferry's real work if you ask me. I just see it as a bit of fun on here limting myself to one band as it makes it more difficult and interesting for me to find songs for the themes.
It would be obvious that BF will not be everyone's cup of tea and I can appreciate that. There are many very successful artists I can't see the attraction in artists like Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, Phil Collins, Oasis but for some reason they are all huge and I am happy for anyone who likes them but they are just not my cup of tea.
#6 Bryan Ferry actually has done some sea shanties. He did two songs on an album called Rouge's Gallery that included Sting, Bono and many others.
Now where did I put my thermos and festive anorak ;-)

So the mouse potatoes charmaraderie halo appears to be well and truly slipping within the ensemble for that of mere petulant schoolchildren vying for sirs attention...
So what if RJ has produced the biggest list of questionable drivel imaginable?
What is your problem with that... other than the fact, the matter that you yourselves are not presently enjoying the notoriety that you all so earnestly desire?
Please Sir, Please Sir,
I have got a copy of the first Beatles L.P. on reel-to-reel format you know I might even have some old copies of Smash Hits, my list is bigger and better than their list... can I bring to show and tell?
Please sir, please, pretty please...
Remember you have a plane to catch on the 15th Glen.
That is right EC jokes are always better at somebody else's expense.
Had thought better of you Norrie!
