Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 17:53 UK time, Saturday, 3 January 2009

A happy new year to all who listen in, email, text call or blog and make Get It On such fun to do. I hope we've got some good themes to tempt you with this year. The first week of themes has been suggested by Jim in Erskine. At least I hope it's Jim in Erskine***. I've left the 'themes folder' in work and I'm trying to up date the blog at home on Saturday teatime so I have no way of checking!
Jim ( hopefully!) has suggested that we do a week long theme of two word titles, three word titles, four word titles and on Thursday's show five word titles. Simple idea but I think it's a cracker. We could start with 'Beat It', move on to 'Life With You', follow it up with 'God Save The Queen' and round off the week with 'A Day In The Life'. Let's see what you come up with...

*** Ooops. It wasn't Jim after all but Joe in Linlithgow. See comment no 28 for his suggestions.

words.jpgMonday 5th Jan
It's two word titles tonight...

Tues 6th January
That makes it three for Tuesday...

Wednesday 7th Jan
Four for Wednesday...

Thursday Jan 8th
and five for tonight.

    Norrie

  • Comment number 7.

    Norrie,
Yeah, for sure. Also have a spare for Saint Andrew on the 27th.
The 6 p.m. starting time is too early for most working folk. Interested?

  • Comment number 8.

I am going allready Scotch thanks to your heads up, think I got the last two tickets!

  • Comment number 9.

Great! We can discuss all that stuff on the 17th, unless Maria monopolises you all evening with Morrissey trivia. :-D

Is the Twisted Wheel the Argyle St end or the George Sq end?

  • Comment number 30.

New year, new name. Last post as slopestatic since it seems to trip people up (not least Bryan!) it's an old name and I'd rather use my last.fm name. So from now on I'll be RhythymHeid...

Woops. just heard Bryans challenge to me. Back in a second.

'Kansas City Star' - Roger Miller

'Georgie Girl Rap' - Sensitive New Age Cowpersons

    Yeeha!

  • Comment number 62.

#58 I agree it's wide open for these themes but if the rest of the week is as good as tonight then I don't mind. I think everyone needs to ease back into things after the holidays too.

If you like difficult themes with plenty of puns you should check out mazzystar's 'herbs and spices' theme (on our Last.fm group - www.last.fm/group/Get+It+On+Listeners/forum/111464/_/485967).

For your theme you could also have the Red House Painters, 'Glass and Steel' by Scott 4 or 'Monkey Island' by 13th Floor Elevators. And wasn't there a construction worker in the Village People?!

  • Comment number 63.

Right, Tuesday's list; this time without the bleedin' obvious tracks that make all the interesting ones get overlooked:

Spike Jones: Cocktails for Two (if only for the stop chorus of hiccups)
    Madness: Drip Fed Fred
Incredible String Band: The Hedgehog's Song (note to (sir)pterry fans: not *that* Hedgehog Song)
    Sandy Denny: John the Gun
    John Lennon: Nobody Told Me
    Billy Bragg: Levi Stubbs' Tears
    Billy Bragg: Tank Park Salute

  • Comment number 64.

#40 I hadn't heard Glen Campbell's version of Southern Nights before. I'm a big fan of Allen Toussaint who wrote the song (as well as 'Working in a Coalmine', 'Lady Marmalade', etc.). Allen's version is a bit more mellow but Glen's is good too.

#33 Cheers Danielle. You can't go wrong with a bit of Stevie.

#45 RoxyJohn - I'll be in the Hamilton end for that game, how about you?

  • Comment number 65.

Strength of Strings - Gene Clark - alluring and alliterative.

Is it too late to start a Save Morris Dancing campaign? Otherwise we will only be able to laugh at old films of it instead of humiliating real people.

  • Comment number 66.

I forgot to post my number-related suggestions at lunchtime. Means you all miss out on 'No Limit' by 2Unlimited! I'm gutted too... ;)

'Woke Up This Morning' - Alabama 3
    'Troubles 1-2-3' - Scott 4
'Golden Age Of Life' - 4Hero
'One Angry Dwarf and 200' - Ben Folds Five
'A Day at the Races' - Jurassic 5

  • Comment number 67.

Glen - I have been practically begging for Gene Clark for months and months, even pledged what is for a humble Civil Engineer some decent cash on the charity night. Now you have suggested him, as has Maria........it could be the week!

Why is Morris not dancing enymore or is Morris Dancing someone I have not heard of?

  • Comment number 68.

ps and sorry evryone getting bored but The True One would have been great, probably the most mainstream track on the album, but after tonights show I suppose The does not count anymore?

  • Comment number 69.

    MORRIS DANCING IS INNOCENT!!!

  • Comment number 70.

#44 Wow Julie... Nine Below Zero outstanding... I've e-mailed for their cover of Roy Head's "Treat her right", just an excellent live act!

  • Comment number 71.

Fred MacAulay wants a TV show called
    'Strictly Scottish Country Dancing'

    (I'm not making this up).

Maybe the English can organise something for Morris.

  • Comment number 72.

Would that be Minor or Traveller?

  • Comment number 73.

    S.G.

    1500hrs on the 17th then?

  • Comment number 74.

    Madmac,
Yeah, RoxyJohn is coming from Hamilton after the game.

P.S. Are you a military man?

P.P.S. Will you email Uncle Vic?

  • Comment number 75.

#62 This weeks themes are really unchallenging but maybe its Bryan thats needing the slow and gentle start to the new year after failing to count up to two re "antmusic". But hey the music was generally good..
    Will check out the link!

  • Comment number 76.

    Re: #68

I would dispute that interpretation. You would only drop 'The' from the beginning of a song or book title for the purpose of filing it in alphabetical order.

e.g. 'The True One' would be filed under 'True One, The'

It's still a three word title.

Bryan, there must be learned folk at PQ who can adjudicate on this matter.

  • Comment number 77.

    #74 and Tuesday song possibility:

'Is Vic there' by Department S

The night is young, the mood is mellow
And there's music in my ears
    Say, is Vic there ?

I hear ringing in the air
    So Mandy answers the phone
    A voice comes over clear
    Say, is Bryan there ?

    The night is bitter,
    The stars have lost their glitter;
    The winds grow colder
    And suddenly you're older -
And all because you asked for Burlesque.

    Gershwin is cool.

No-one will be covering Morrissey songs in 50 years.

Like many have said I think this week's themes are designed to ease us back in,and that's no bad thing. So here's a selction of three word titles for tonight.

That’s Aright Mama - Elvis Presley
Born to Run / Drive All Night / Reason to Believe / Johnny Bye Bye - Bruce Springsteen
Street Fighting Man - Rolling Stones
Heads Roll Off - Frightened Rabbit
    Get It On - T-Rex
Positively 4th Street / Subterranean Homesick Blues / Lay Lady Lay - Bob Dylan
Tears of a Clown - Smoky Robinson
One Way Out - Allman Brothers
Games People Play - Joe South or King Curtis
    Strawberry Fields Forever - Beatles
Your Cheating Heart - Hank Williams
Nutbush City Limits - Ike and Tina Turner

  • Comment number 85.

The scope for three word titles is vast so to add something extra how about a three in the title as well so....

    Take Three Girls - Pentangle

    Three words the same...

    Turn Turn Turn - Byrds

    Also

The Promised Land - just to prove I'm not anti Bruce Springsteen. I still say his xmas stuff is guff!

#70 - Mac. I would love to see Nine below Zero. Was really excited one year, when on holiday in France, to arrive at a seaside town in Brittany to see posters advertising a Nine Below Zero gig...then really disappointed that it had been just the evening before. They played at the Bein Inn a couple of times but I wasn't able to go. They seem to appear at a lot of Jazz and Blues festivals in England and anbroad but not too much in Scotland.

Incidentally, my late father, was taught morris dancing while at school in Edinburgh in the thirties!!! He'd have been 87 last birthday so I doubt any of his former classmates would be sprightly enough to appear at the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony Spectacular :0)

""#45 RoxyJohn - I'll be in the Hamilton end for that game, how about you?""

I am an Inverness Caledonian Thistle season ticket holder so I will be on the away end dragging us off the bottom with a win over Hamilton. ;-)

Morris dancing / opening ceremony spectacular. They really don't fit together do they? Besides don't get me started on the 'spectacular' waste of money that the olympics will be, and that's without the current economic woes. A lesson in the mendacity of politicians who put together a bid knowing full well that the real bill would be several times greater.

    CONTROVERSY ALERT!!

The national obsession with sport in general and football in particular leaves me mystified.
What does it matter who wins the cup?
    Why should anyone care?

#84 Hoppo - that is a brilliant Springsteen list , Johnny Bye Bye would be a fantastic shout, fitting in with Bryans Elvis theme as it is an elegy to Elvis Presley, co-credited to Chuck Berry as Bruce used his opening lines from the song of the same name. Try and get the b side to Fire version - slightly better than the Tracks one.

@90 Hoppo - I was back yesterday and I'm still grumpy today.

Eh ~ on reflection #91 is a post which really should have gone on some sort of Springsteen forum......ah well back to my Morrissey thoughts.

Oops forgot to say (as if I needed to) my post #97 are all by Bryan Ferry

  • Comment number 99.

Re #94 Dr Feelgood, always worth a blast and they are criminally negelected on radio

Can I suggest for tonight's Three Word band name theme, White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes.

They're music seems to be able to totally enhance your mood after listening to only a couple of bars and I hope they just keep getting better and bigger fin 2009.

Happy New Year by the way.

Alternative suggestion is Juxtaposed With U by Supper Furry Animals as I know there will be people debating (like lsome of last night's tunes) whether it is in fact 3 words or just 2 words and a letter. (yawn) :)
