Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 09:02 UK time, Friday, 23 January 2009

There are not many programmes which have played Jimmy Shand and Jan Hammer in the same week! I look forward to getting an equally diverse list in for this week . Email your suggestions or call or text during the show...

Monday - Due to popular demand on the Get In On blog, tonight's theme is songs and artists connected to the Farmyard! Size Of A Cow perhaps? Get in touch and Get It On...

Tuesday - Joe The Jam Man suggests 'revolutions'. Anything to do with circular shapes and movements. You could pick Round Round or Watching the Wheels.

Wednesday - Double languages. An evening of songs sung in English that have a foreign language interlude.

Thursday - I name that tune in one! Tracks that you recognise from the opening note, as suggested by P McCafferty.

    SUGGESTED THEMES

As Feb 3rd is the 50th anniversary of 'the day the music died' could the programme include songs and covers of Buddy, Ritchie and the Big Bopper.

Also,( I've suggested this one before but I think it would make a great show), "Unfulfilled desires and thwarted ambitions". Even my limited music collection contains a good few. eg:-

    'Only make believe' Conway Twitty
'Smoke gets in your eyes' Bryan Ferry
'No particular place to go' Chuck Berry
    'No money down' Chuck Berry
    'I'm a loser' Beatles
'Never had a dream come true' Stevie Wonder

  • Comment number 3.

    MONDAY

'Bantam Cock' - Jake Thackray (a tad risque, perhaps).

'Farm on the Freeway' - Jethro Tull

'Settin' the Woods on Fire' - The Tractors

  • Comment number 4.

    TUESDAY

'Prelude from Bach's Cello Suite No. 1' - Yo-Yo Ma

'Coming Around Again' - Carly Simon

    'Jackie's Train' - Mary Gauthier

    'Locomotive Breath' - Jethro Tull

'You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd' - Roger Miller

  • Comment number 5.

    #2

You can add these suggestions to your list of thwarted ambitions, Boab, because they would be "good to hear".

  • Comment number 6.

    WEDNESDAY

'If You Go Away' - Dusty (French) Tears guaranteed, or your money back!

'Down at the Twist and Shout' - Mary Chapin Carpenter' (French)

'Smoke and Strong Whiskey' - Christy Moore (Irish)

'We Reserve The Right To Refuse Service To You' - Kinky Friedman (Hebrew)

  • Comment number 7.

    THURSDAY

    'Aqualung' - Jethro Tull

Norrie and I will be at the Mary Gauthier gig.

I leave y'all 'Aqualung' as a wee treat!

  • Comment number 8.

Here! How come I didnt get credited for the farm theme????

Anway, I'm in first with the puns:

Joe Cocker(el) - With A Little Help From My Hens.

  • Comment number 9.

Adam, you're right. It was your idea and, correct me if I'm wrong, but you haven't had a theme chosen yet. This is your big day!

I think the entire 'Animals' album by Pink Floyd should be played

    Pigs on the Wing 1
    Dogs
    Pigs (Three Different Ones)
    Sheep
    Pigs on the Wing 2

OK, perhaps this falls into the wishful thinking category as expressed in #2 above. Howsabout playing 'Sheep' then? It has one of the best playouts ever!

Failing that (& I know it's bound to fail), 'Piggies' from the Beatles White Album HAS to be played

Of course, if it's the farmyard we're on about, it's full of pats - Pat Benatar, Pat Boone....

    Monday Farm Theme:

Nanci Griffith - Trouble In The Fields
    Joe grusheky - Homestead
    Bruce Springsteen - Seeds
Big Country - Field of Fire

  • Comment number 11.

Oh just remembered - I am not a Beach Boys fan at all but I did like Fleetwood Macs version of Farmers Daughter.

  • Comment number 12.

Got to get something from Pink Floyd's Animals on for the Farm theme - Pigs or Sheep.

  • Comment number 13.

Suggestiosn for farming theme, though I hope to be watching Locos give Motherwell a damn good thrashing - well getting ready to watch etc., for most of the show

    Harvest - Neil Young
Seeds / My Oklahoma Home - Bruce Springsteen
    Country Girl - Primal Scream
Milk and Alcohol - Dr Feelgood
Horse with No Name - America
From the Underworld / I Don’t Want our Loving to Die - The Herd
    Funky Chicken - Rufus Thomas
King Harvest (Has Surely Come) - The Band
Cattle and Cane - The Go-Betweens
    New Pony - Bob Dylan
    Piggies - Beatles
Sowing the Seeds - Tears for Fears

    and BTW

  • Comment number 14.

OK, that's DC & CaptainR asking for Sheep by Pink Floyd. Any advance on this?

Perhaps, with sufficient requests, Bryan will feel compelled to play the song asked for by BloggerPower (TM)

  • Comment number 20.

Monday : XTC Love On A Farm Boy's Wages

  • Comment number 21.

    MONDAY

Mr Rock & Roll - Amy (old) MacDonald

    TUESDAY

The Windmills Of Your Mind - Dusty Springfield in preference to Noel Harrison or Sting.

This has to be the song with the most references to round things.

    WEDNESDAY

    Psycho Killer - Talking Heads
    Denis - Blondie

    THURSDAY-

    Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor
Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners
Letter From America - The Proclaimers

The last two possibly take more than one note to recognise, but most people would certainly get them within the first few notes/seconds.

  • Comment number 22.

    Monday

Surely John (Cougar) Mellencamp, considering his involvement in Farm Aid, should get some airplay tonight - "Rain on the Scarecrow" seems extremely apt.

"Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)" - Warren Zevon ("what else can a farmboy from Canada do"?).

"Murder in the Red Barn" - Tom Waits.

Oh, and check out Cousin Emmy's performance of Turkey in the Straw on youtube :0)

    Maggie's Farm - Bob Dylan

  • Comment number 26.

Adam, ah'm a wee bit worried that so few folk are taking your suggestion seriously

Anything by Feeder should be considered, as should 'Sunset Cowboy' by Stone the Crows

Of course, 'Sheep' by Pink Floyd needs to be played.....

    Dixie chicken - Llittle Feat

    Monday (The Farmyard)

Roxy Music's Both Ends Burning has the line "while your counting sheep who can sleep in this heat this night"

Bryan Ferry has a song called 'Wildcat Days' the first song he co-wrote with Eno. I am sure may famers are plauged by wild cats.

On a brighter note, my copy of Let It Be is apparently worth £200.

Since Thursday is the 40th anniversary of the rooftop concert, the last time the world's greatest band played together in public, it should surely be marked by the playing of a few Beatles songs - many of which are instantly recognisable.

  • Comment number 37.

    Aye, right enough!

    Stop calling me Shirley..........................

  • Comment number 38.

Glen, I agree Thursday should acknowledge this, but I'm not sure which track is best.

The 'Two of us' should 'Get back' 'Across the universe' with this suggestion. We can't 'Let it be', though 'I've got a feeling' that 'Maggie Mae'. What do you reckon? Will Bryan 'Dig it'?

Maybe if we plead, he might play it the 'One after 909' 'For you blue'. We'll both pester him caus it's a 'Long and winding road' trying to persuade him. You do your pleading and 'I me mine'.

Meanwhile, I suggest 'I dig a pony' for Monday

Monday - The Farm "Groovy Train" (rather than All Together Now, which i always thought was rotten)

Tuesday - New Order "Round and Round"

Wednesday - Eigth Wonder "Im Not Scared" - written by this year's Outstanding Contribution... Brit Award winners - The Pet Shop Boys.

Thursday - Depeche Mode "Everything Counts" (OK the first note is heard is one of those construction site samples that was in every Mode single around this point, but hey - it's recognisable)

As an idea for a theme, how about songs more famous as covers, for example "Tainted Love" or "Halleluliah"

  • Comment number 63.

All Together Now was pretty good. And so is the Pet Shop Boys' version. And Belle & Sebastian's.

It was pretty good when Pachabel wrote it, too.

  • Comment number 64.

Now that's totally weird... I am listening to the original tune right now!

Brian Eno also covered it very well on one of his early three-channel ambient albums. Did anyone else apart from me bother to set up the speakers according to his diagrams?

    Re Sunday Girl

I listened to Sunday Girl before suggesting Denis (#21), because I thought there was some french in it, but there is none in the version of the track I have (from Greatest Hits: Sight and Sound).

I'm sure I have heard it with "depeche toi" replacing "hurry up" in some of the lines, so if Bryan is going to play it he'll need to make sure he has a version which included the french.

Denis has been played before, but not as frequently as Hanging on the Telephone.

What is the most instantly recognisable record of the rock'n'roll era (say 1956 on)?

Based on its sales I would suggest Rock Around The Clock (though a number of buyers may no longer be with us). I would discount Candle In The Wind as it is nondescript. Maybe it's Hey Jude.

  • Comment number 81.

Badly phrased. I meant recognised by the greatest number of people. Obviously, the most distinctive record may have a very small listenership viz. PM Dawn.

I've got some Lonnie Donegan 78s (inherited, of course). They probably wouldn't be allowed now as a health and safety risk. If they came off the turntable at that speed they would decapitate you.

    Adam,
As it's your theme on Monday, the team are obliged to play your request.
You can be totally outrageous! >8-D

  • Comment number 87.

    Re Thursday:

Could P McCafferty (or Bryan) please elaborate on Thursday's theme. I don't know if I should suggest tracks that are easily recognisable to the majority of listeners by just their first note, or if the first few notes are OK... does it rule out sung intros...can we ask for songs that we instantly recognise but don't think/care if others are likely to know them? Chances are P McC was fairly precise when he suggested it but the wording on the blog has altered his theme a bit.

  • Comment number 88.

Dunno, but I was trying to be pretty strict - 1st note, played or sung.

  • Comment number 89.

    Adam,
Do not allow DC to influence your decision. The man is obsessed with the porcine and the ovine.

Remember, there are many Jethro Tull songs from which you can choose!

    I salute your estimability!

  • Comment number 90.

#87 - I took it that suitable tunes would simply be those that you 'get' straight away. I don't think it has to be quite literally one note. I think they just used the ;name that tune in one' thing because it's a commonly used expression and there used to be a TV programme called 'Name That Tune'.

  • Comment number 91.

    #87

  • Comment number 92.

#90 It's OK...I know about the game show...I just like to be clear about what the themes are supposed to be i.e. what the person who suggested it really meant. Sometimes the content of the theme is changed a wee bit via how it's described on the blog. I wonder sometimes if the GIO team think they'll get a more successful programme by widening a theme and I suspect it's not always necessary. In this case though it may be the other way round. I know I'm being pedantic.
