Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 16:07 UK time, Friday, 30 January 2009

Last week's themes were great fun and we got through some terrific tunes. You can catch up with the playlists online or listen again if you fancy it. Don't be shy about contributing to the blog. Feel free to leave your suggestions and join in the (hopefully!) friendly banter. You can also call or text during the show or email me...

Monday
It's a night of Jive Talkin' on Get It On. Let's have your songs featuring, fab, funky, groovy, cool, and boogie. Whether I will be able to 'get down on it' remains to be seen....

Tuesday
It's the 50th anniversary of the . On tonight's show we'll feature music from the artists who are no longer with us.

Wednesday
Will it be 'Sexy Boy' or 'Fat Bottomed Girls'? Are you 'Glad All Over' or is 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' a more accurate reflection of the way you feel? Tonight's theme is the songs that could have been written about you...

Thursday
Bryan Adamson suggests a night of great covers - not cover versions but the artwork that features on the greatest single and album sleeves ever....

    Monday
    Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb) - Ed Byrnes & Connie Stevens - The front runner in jive talk from 77 Sunset Strip

    Tuesday

    This Is Love - George Harrison
    I'll See You In My Dreams - Joe Brown for George and all of them

    Wednesday
    Model Citizen - Warren Zevon

    Thursday
    You Keep Me Hanging On - Vanilla Fudge - The sleeve is admittedly a nod towards Goldfinger
    Strange Brew - Cream - Disraeli Gears - A good example of psychedelia since the 13th Floor Elevators are unlikely to be played

  • Comment number 2.

    Tuesday - Inevitably

    John Martyn - oh god this is so difficult.....

    "Johnny Too Bad" - adopted as his theme song, and what a bad b**ger he was;
    "One World" - the other side of the coin, John the sad soulful dreamer;
    "Over the Hill" - folky and perky;
    "Over the Rainbow" - he never had a dog called Toto though (and this beats Eva Cassidy hands down);
    "Sweet Little Mystery" - Wet Wet Wet had a nerve even trying to write a song of the same name;
    and so on and so on.

  • Comment number 3.

    Thursday

    Prog / heavy rock had loads of good covers:

    Since Barney Bubbles is widely acknowledged to have been one of the great cover designers, straddling psychedelia and punk, there may be a chance for:

    "Orgone Accumulator" from Hawkwind's pioneering fold-out covered "Space Ritual" (Bubbles later used the same trick on Costello's "Armed Forces", but I am not even going to mention that one, as I know how BB feels about Costello, nearly as well played as Blondie and Queen...).

    Recently clearing out my parental home, I came across the transparent sticker from the front of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" (vinyl version obviously). Gerald Scarfe's design was pretty good, so maybe "Mother", just to depress us all;

    Led Zeppelin's "Presence" with its recurring obelisk was a bit scary, "Achilles' Last Stand" from it?

    Punky - Dead Fingers' Talk eponyomous debut album had a great skeletal and mutated hand on it: "Nobody Loves You When You're Old and Gay";
    PiL's "Metal Box" did what it said on the (literal) tin. "Swan Lake" from that.

    And Neil Young's "On the Beach" with the wallpaper inside and the car buried in sand on the cover is a bit more mainstream but still very warped: "Vampire Blues".

    Monday

    Get Down - Gene Chandler

  • Comment number 5.

    MONDAY

    'Shaft' - Isaac Hayes (can you dig it?)

  • Comment number 6.

    Gene Chandler - I salute his longevitability

  • Comment number 7.

    Tuesday - gotta have something from Eva Cassidy, mebbe Songbird or Fields of Gold. Close call whether she or Stevie N did the better Songbird, but she beats Sting hands down. Thursday - and now for something completely different - The Vertigo of Bliss, Biffy Clyro. Just as well this is a radio show or you couldnae do that before 9pm.

  • Comment number 8.

    Really enjoyed what i heard of last weeks shows, although I did not catch all of the music.

    First thoughts on next week:

  • Comment number 9.

    Only with appropriate shoring.

    I thought Thursday's show was particularly good and I am reportedly not easily pleased.

    The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and Clark has an interesting gay bikers cover.

  • Comment number 10.

    Sorry getting back to my bad old ways but some of the Nnaci Griffith and the Crickets material would be a great tribute to Buddy Holly

    Well......All Right from the Buddy Holly tribute

    Tuesday - not much to add to my earlier blog....

    MONDAY

    As well as songs from the 60s onwards mentioning groovy, cool etc, I'd love to hear some songs from earlier eras.

    I'm no expert but I do love jazz, swing, bebop etc from 1930s-50s and the newer retro artists are good fun too. This type of music is rich in jive (or 'hep') talk.

    TUESDAY

    'Lah-Di-dah' - Jake Thackray

    Quote:- Jake Thackray was a singer-songwriter in the French tradition, a "chansonnier" whose songs are nevertheless convincingly and idiosyncratically English. -:Unquote

    (stolen from website, jakethackray.com)

    Jake went to Heaven on Xmas Eve 2002

  • Comment number 29.

    There's a quiz on the Get It On listeners site at:

    There's a general theme to the music which, quite coincidentally, features groups with artists who have died.

    The entire quiz music could be played on Tuesday (apart from the joker track, but you need to read the challenge to understand this!) There's also a lot of trivia to be learned!

    Julie is doing brilliantly so far and glenmiller, ec in the north sea, captain raimus and jim fae erskine have all put in their tuppenceworth

    Have a look! First prize is a round of applause from the rest of us

    Not on last fm as yet but here are my tenuous guesses at the links

    No one but you is subtitled only the good die young which is a line from abraham martin and john which paid tribute ti civil rigts leader Martin Luther king. The cvil rights anthem was a change is gonna come by Sam cooke who often played with the 5 royales who wrote dedicated to the one i love which was recorded by mamas and the papas. Mama cass died in the same flat as drummer keith moon with the who, who's guitarist pete townsend also played on something in the air by thunderclap newman whose member jimmy mcculloch replaced les harvey of stone the crows who died at a gig in swansea. Richie Edwards went to swansea uni and the manics raindrops featured on the help album based around the concept of john lennon's instant karma.Badfinger were the first act signed to the apple label and recorded a song dear angie. Angie was also the name of a Stones Song and their let it loose was part of The Departed soundtrack which also featured the beach boys sail on sailor. The beach boys sang backing vocals on Chicago's wishing you were here and the Smashing pumpkins were formed in chicago. Their song drown featured on the soundtrack of the film Singles which was also supposed to feature Smells like teen spirit by nirvana but which had to be dropped because of the cost of the rights by the time the film came out.

    Am i close? Is any of it right?

    Off to Tuts for new album launch of Hecules Mandarin and lots of Liquid

  • Comment number 36.

    #33. At last!!! That's probably the connection between The Who and TMATP that DC was after - I've thought of a few but not the right ones. You mention The Manics but not Catatonia...Is Swansea the link the quiz refers to then I wonder (putting all the early death stuff aside)? It's interesting how many other links you can come up with once you start thining about it. Enjoy the launch.

    Bryan Adamson suggesting great covers. You're having a laugh. With the way he cuts hair he's never left anyone with a "great cover".

    Wednesday:

    Well, for me it would either have to be The O'Jays 'I Love Music' (I hope it's nopt p[layed on Monday)...great song and so, so true...Or, just for a laugh 'Cause I'm A Blonde' by Julie Brown (from the soundtrack of the film Earth Girls Are Easy - Scotch, Glen et al I'm not claiming similarity to that phrase here so no comments please). It's a brilliant pastiche.

    Have spent very few quid this weekend on some fantastic CD's, courtesy of a shop where Maria used to work. One of which was a Mott / Hunter anthology

    Mott The Hoople - Honaloochie Boogie

    Also wondered in the passing if the mentioned secret tracks theme ever happened, reason being as I was about to pass out last night Teddy Thopmpson suddenly sprung to life with a secret track a cover of The Everlys The Price Of Love! As an aside that is an album which just gets better with every play.

  • Comment number 77.

    re secret tracks. They scare the runny stuff out of me especially when I have blissfully entered the land of nod only to be re awoken suddenly and unexpectedly. They're also a pain when settin up playlists which include the last listed track on such albums.

    But secret tracks aren't anything new - all kinds of games were played with vinyl albums; anyone remember the album that had two different grooves on one side, and you couldn't predict which you'd get?

    Secret tracks (or rather: a track extended by a long period of silence, followed by another song without a track marker separating them) annoy me to; particularly if you *want* the second track. Otherwise you just tell iTunes to truncate the track at the end of the 1st song :-)

    There's a U2 compilation that does this with October being the second song. As that's one of my favourite U2 tracks, it's annoying to say the least.

    #78 don't remember such an album though clever concept. Did have a vinyl never ending single though. The Look's I am the beat had a nick at the end which constantly repeated I am the beat beat beat beat ad infinitum.

    Capt do not doubt you - but are you sure its not the Kate Bush 12" on your mind?

    See Monday's theme - are we just looking for the *word* groovy (fab, cool, boogie etc), or are we looking for the *quality* of groove (fabness, cool, boogie etc)?

    If the latter:
    * Right Said Fred: Deeply Dippy
    * Dave Brubeck: Unsquare Dance
    * Asian Dub Foundation: Return of Django
    * Mika: Lollipop
    * Beats International: Dub Be Good to Me
    * Rosemary Clooney: Mambo Italiano
    * Scissor Sisters: Laura
    * James: Sit Down
    * Beck: Go It Alone
    * The Pioneers: Longshot Kick De Bucket
    * The Sawdoctors: Will it ever stop Raining?
    all of which it's impossible to listen to without the head-nodding setting in

    #44 - Lynyrd Skynyrd gained an ex-keyboard player on Thursday

    Actually, that link is a Spinal-Tap level catalogue of deaths and serious injuries in the band. If you're invited to audition for them, turn it down!

    What is an ex-keyboard?

    It's probably pining for the fjords.

    Just to add to the bit of trivia about Keith Moon and Mama Cass dying in the same flat. The flat was owned by Harry Nilsson and he often let it out to musicians on tour. After the second death he sold it to Pete Townsend (still alive). Harry, himself an RIP these days had his biggest hit with the Badfinger song Without You witten by the band's Ham and Evans both of whom topped themselves. On that cheery note.....

    MONDAY-

    Blame It On The Boogie - Jackson 5. Always reminds me of Buster Brown's in Edinburgh.

    TUESDAY -

    18 Carat Love Affair - The Associates
    Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley

    I'd also second the shouts for Kirsty MacColl.

    Is the link between catatonia and the manics in the name. Catatonia being a mental or manic disturbance of some sort?
