Next week's themes....

Bryan Burnett | 09:08 UK time, Friday, 20 February 2009

It was wonderful to get so many first timers on on Thursdays show but I am looking forward to welcoming back 'the regulars' for next week. I hope we've got some challenging themes to get you back in the swing of things....
elvisc.jpg
Monday 23 February
Tonight's theme is songs with days of the week in the title, lyrics or artist name - it could be The Undertones 'Wednesday Week', Rolling Stones 'Ruby Tuesday' or The Sundays 'Here's Where The Story Ends'.

Tuesday 24 February
Blogger PaoloPablo suggested tonight's theme - songs from acts that include the backing band in their name. Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers or maybe Adam & The Ants.

Wednesday 25 February
There've been several suggestions around the idea of artists whose songs are better known as being sung by someone else. Cat Stevens ' First cut Is The Deepest', Bruce Springsteen 'Blinded By The Light', Prince 'Nothing Compares 2 U' and Labi Siffre 'It Must Be Love' are just some of those mentioned.

Thursday 26 February
Billy in Edinburgh suggested 'buildings' as tonight's theme - 'House of Fun' by Madness, 'Hotel California' by The Eagles, The Motors 'Airport' or even Shed 7!

    Drive in Saturday / Bowie
    Theme from Ski Sunday
Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon / Queen

    Tue
I could produce a mega list but the one I really want is Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. Old Time Rock n Roll would be good to get folk dancin round their kitchens but Still the Same would be Grrreat cos it reminds me of buying the single in a wee record shop on holiday in Nairn. It must have been the only record shop in the whole of the uk that bothered to stock it.

    Wed
    Without You / Badfinger

    Days of The Week

Some great songs fit this theme:

All days - The Clash and Police On My Back, I cannot remeber just now who did the original.

Sunday - Sunday Morning, The Velvet Underground

Sunday - Every Day Is Like Sunday, 10,000 Maniacs version would be good to mix it up a bit, great version as well.

Tuesday - Sun Comes Up, It's Tuesday Morning, fantatstic Cowboy Junkies song. From the tremendous caution Horses album and a great breakup song.

Thursday - Thursday's Child - David Bowie not sure why Paolo dropped it from his list, brilliant video with this song.

Saturday - Drive In Saturday again Bowie but how about Morrisseys cover version?

Saturday - a good bit of glam Saturday Gigs - Mott The Hoople.

    Happy Friday everyone.

  • Comment number 17.

~13 Aaargh thats what I get Adam! I had it on my mental list and got so caught up in trying to remember if any Bowie tracks were credited as David Bowie and The Spiders that I forgot! It is a great version and can I second that!

as an aside does anyone know if the Easybeats subsequently become Flash and The Pan? I tried to google but cannot find this out? I know George Young is brother of the AC/DC brothers.

  • Comment number 18.

No Bowie and The Spiders of course but a coupole of really early Bowie tracks are worthy of a play:

Davy Jones and the Lower Third - You've Got A Habit of Leaving, which Bowie subsequently re-recorded around the time of Heathen

and a great track, first under the name David Bowie

David Bowie with The Lower Third - I Can't Help Thinking About Me

again a track which has been re-visited recently by Bowie.

    Tuesday

In the interests of stopping droning on about Hawkwind, I'm not going to mention them this week! Sooooo - the following artists have not (as far as I can recall) ever been played on GIO before:

Richard Hell and the Voidoids "Blank Generation"
Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass "Spanish Flea"
Hatfield and the North "Fitter Stoker Takes a Bath"
Slaughter and the Dogs "Cranked Up Really High"
Country Joe and the Fish "Feels Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" (go on, Bryan!)
Shane McGowan and the Popes "That Woman's Got Me Drinking"

    and the following have:

Toots and the Maytals "Pressure Drop"
Derek and the Dominos "Little Wing"
Siouxsie and the Banshees "Playground Twist"
Ian Dury and the Blockheads "My Old Man"

None of them (bar the guitarist from Derek and the Dominos) are ever likely to win a Brit either.

  • Comment number 41.

There have been quite a few Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers shouts and they are a grat band so hope they get played, I love the track Don't Come Around Here No More.

Really brilliant and unusual for them so might not get played, I think it was David A Stewart of Eurythmics etc who worked with him on it - great intro!

  • Comment number 42.

I actually meant not typical of their stuff so one of the more straightforward tracks might get more requests. All that typing whilst trying to think as well......

    Disorder In The House
Tenderness On The Block - Warren Zevon

  • Comment number 46.

Good list Glen El Rayo X would be more than welcome and the Factory is one of my favourite Zevon tracks. Bryan should play El-Rayo X and put some photos up of David Lindleys crazy fashion sense!

And if the Boss is going to copy....well at least he made it a good one! ;o) There must be a few more tracks like that and I am not such a Boss snob that I would not concede you are absolutely right, and with Teddy having the better of the two versions!

So to get Bruce back some credibilty you should credit his duet with Zevon on Disorder!

  • Comment number 47.

  • Comment number 49.

I think he did, well would hope so and certainly his live tribute the day after Zevons death, My Ride's Here, is without doubt one of Springsteens recorded live highlights and a fitting tribute to Zevon. For anyone who has not heard this:

Beavers won't be a problem. Somebody wants to re-introduce the wolf. If they get out of hand there's always the brown bear.

At least it'll keep traffic down on the West Highland Way in the summer.

  • Comment number 63.

    #62

Someone wanted wolves to keep the number of deer down. Someone else pointed out that catching deer requires a great deal of effort. Wolves would probably find sheep a tad easier to stalk.

  • Comment number 64.

Antlers are OK for your wall but they won't keep you warm in winter.

    I'm rather partial to venison.

  • Comment number 74.

Alas I see that someone has already asked for Sunday Girl for tonight.

I'm going to go for all country choices this week:-

    Monday:-

Drinking in my Sunday Dress - Maria McKee

    Tuesday:-

I Married Her Just because She Looks Like You - Lyle Lovett and his Large Band.

Lyle Lovett and his Large Band is actually the album title so I'm probably bending the rules a little.

    Wednesday:-

I Will Always Love You - Dolly Parton

I know you've all ben avoiding this one, but I'm sure Bryan's dying to play it, and it is classic example of the theme.

    Thursday:-

Late Night Grande Hotel or Love at the Five and Dime - Nanci Griffith.

  • Comment number 75.

    Busy man so apart from hoping that you play the Melanie' version of Ruby Tuesday as it is associated (as described in a post last week)with what can only be described as a seminal moment in my life I would note the following which have probably all been requested already;

    Days - Kinks
Lazy Sunday Afternoon - Small faces

I thought you looked poorly in your photograph.

Damn!! Someone's already suggested Billy Bragg and the Blokes, though I would prefer "Take Down The Union Jack" - released at the same time as the Golden Jubilee.

Damn!! Someone's already suggested Gloria Jones original take on "Tainted Love"

"Burning Down the House" by Talking Heads would be great for Thursday.

oops..forgot about "Shine On" by HOUSE of Love for Thursday. Reminds me of some great nights out in Brum as a young, eager 18 year old!!

Their album released in 2005 was also really good and worth a listen.

Question Mark and the Mysterians - '96 Tears'

Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames - 'Getaway'

#84 No harm in backing someone else's suggestion, especially if it's not a Smiffs track that Bryan's already itching to play :-)

Take Down the Union Jack's a fine call; Billy's one of the few people thinking about Englishness without verging towards the knuckle-dragging mouthbreather brigade. And there's a shout out to Scotland in the song too.

Can't think of anything stranger than Boris Pickett and the Cryptkickers for Tuesday.

Apparently their hit "Monster Mash" was a number 1 in the USA upon release in 1962 but was banned from the ´óÏó´«Ã½ playlists because it was "too morbid". Unfortunately the ban was lifted in the early seventies.

I sincerely hope that the Get It On team have re-instated the ban for Tuesday at least

One more for tonight that I'd forgotten about until it came up on the fruit-branded-MP3-player yesterday:
Spike Jones & his City Slickers: Cocktails for Two (containing the only known stop-chorus of hiccups on record)

    Tuesday;

How could I have missed Graham Parker and the Rumour off my list, especially as I've been trying to get GP played recently. They were a great live band and sadly neglected on radio these days though I was pleasantly surprised to hear one of their tracks played on Radio 6 last night.

I do second Hopo's suggestion of their version of 'Hold Back The Night' but I'd really like to hear 'Silly Thing', 'New York Shuffle' or 'Heat Treatment' (other great GP songs I'd like to hear but they're without The Rumour so don't fit into the theme). If you had 7 minutes to spare, 'The Heat In Harlem' is well worth a listen. I recently realised (and was a bit suprised) I have more GP albums (on vinyl) than I have by anyone else. As I've said before...hurrah for pub rock!

    For Tuesday, how about:

What were the chances of a second vote for Gene Gnawedtree?

There's a Carnival picture of Adam in today's Herald painted in gold like Shirley Eaton and wearing a posing pouch. How different from our own dear Kelvin Hall.

    Wednesday:

'And I Love You So' - Perry Como (Don McLean original).

'Police and Thieves - The Clash (Junior Murvin original).

'The Tide Is high' - Blondie (The Paragons original).

Now this bends the theme a bit (so take it as a bit of trivia perhaps :0) ), since I wouldn't say the cover is as well known as the original ... Elvis Costello wrote 'Almost Blue' with Chet Baker in mind. Baker played trumpet on 'Shipbuilding' and Elvis Costello gave him a tape of the song. Costello didn't hear from Baker after that. When Baker died, Costello was interviewed and the reporter said he had a tape of Chet Baker's version of...'Almost Blue'!
