Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 14:48 UK time, Friday, 13 March 2009

One minute you are on holiday wandering idly from coffee shop to coffee shop feeling totally relaxed and in an instant it seems you are back behind your desk trying to juggle three things at once.

coffee.jpg

Apart from worrying that the new A & F shirt that I bought on holiday might just be a bit on the young side, I am prepping for hosting Marie Curie's Daffodil Ball on Saturday then it's Action For Children's Women of Influence lunch on Sunday.

And of course there are next week's themes to get organised.I hope you like them and as always don't be shy about getting in touch. Send me an e-mail with your suggestions or leave them on the blog.

Monday 16th
Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow - songs about any of them will be accepted tonight. Thanks to Maria and Donald who came up with the theme...

Tuesday 17th
It's St Patrick's Day so tonight we'll feature the best Irish artists of all time...

Wednesday 18th
On Broadway, Walking Down Madison or maybe Frank Sinatra's famous anthem. It's New York songs for tonight's theme...

Thursday 19th
It's 30 ( er...sorry 40!) years since John married Yoko so let's celebrate with songs about being hitched - the happy ones as well as the ones that lead to D.I .V.O.R.C.E.

    Erm... Bryan,

    1969 plus 30 = 1999

Shouldn't this be the 40th anniversary of John & Yoko's marriage?

I think we should be telt

Glad to see that the arithmetic has improved over the past couple of hours.

Hope you enjoyed your holiday Bryan. Babs has put up with a lot of stick from the regulars, but she has eventually agreed to allow more Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and Jethro Tull on the show. Best not let her down.

Monday, 'A Day In The Life' because of the intro 'I read the news today (Oh Boy').

Great excuse to play this song.

  • Comment number 16.

    Marriages 'n' a' that:

You could go for the cynical:
    * Kacey Jones w/Delbert McClinton: You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly
    * The Pogues: Fairytale of New York (in case you miss it on Wed)
    * Elton John: But Not For Me

But I definitely have strong preferences for the soppy:
    * Michael Marra: True Love
    * John Lennon: Grow Old With Me
    * Christy Moore: The Voyage (always a special one for me & First Mate Ramius)

  • Comment number 17.

    New York:
    Just 2 tracks:

    * The Pogues: Thousands are Sailing (definitely better than Fairytale of New York, except at Christmas)

    * Springsteen: You're Missing (which is the most profound song I know about the events of 9/11)

'The Beaver's Lesson' (a wee extract)

Then the Butcher contrived an ingenious plan

    For making a separate sally;

And had fixed on a spot unfrequented by man,

    A dismal and desolate valley

But the very same plan to the Beaver occurred:

It had chosen the very same place:

Yet neither betrayed, by a sign or a word,

The disgust that appeared in his face

  • Comment number 51.

    MONDAY:

    'Yesterday' - Ray Charles

'Between Today and Yesterday' - Alan Price (why are his songs not played more often - I find his songwriting style quite similar to that of Ray Davies, who gets lots of airplay)

'Yesterday Has Gone' - Cupid's Inspiration (quite a typical late 60s chart song)

'Is It Like Today'? - World Party

'Today's the Day' - Aimee mann

'Just For Today' - India Arie

    'Maybe Tomorrow' - Stereophonics

'Sky Takes The Soul' - The proclaimers. Song (and chorus) starts "Could be tomorrow, could be today") One of their earliest and I think still one of their best.

Jim Croce sang 'Hey Tomorrow' , 'Maybe Tomorrow', 'More Than Tomorrow' and 'Tomorrow's Gonna Be A Brighter Day'.

Jim I see you've gone for REM doin First we Take Manhattan. Have you heard Joe Cockers Version. There's not many covers of Lenny songs that can do justice to the original but Cockers Voice is Fantastic. This uptempo version would have you doin 90 down the motorway without even realising it. Superb Drivin Rock.

  • Comment number 57.

#56 Yes I like Cocker's version and would happily hear it played, but I only recently came across the Flowers' version and am still enjoying it! But yes either version would be cool.

  • Comment number 58.

    THURSDAY:

You simply must play Sinead O'Connor's song 'The Last day Of Our Acquaintance'. It's such a moving story of divorce...starts off soft and hurt and evolves into something portraying emotions of a failed relationship: sorrow, pain and anger and eventually, it seems, acceptance. Very moving...what a singer she is.

Great suggestions for Monday everyone, thanks for going with the theme!!

Second Julies World Party and Stereophonics suggestion both great tracks :-)

Also must support the Sinead O'Connor track for Thursday, brilliant and one of the most underrated songwriters of our time. I don't care that she shows her psycho side sometimes, we all have one and she is just not afraid to do it in public.

"Perfect Day" by Lou Reed describes the events of today but the word doesn't appear in the title or lyrics. Does it qualify?

Tomorrow Is A Long Time - Elvis (Dylans favourire cover version apparently)

P.S. Don't request Jethro Tull. Bryan won't play it, even if it is your theme.

  • Comment number 79.

#78 There are definitely good Tull suggestions for most of this next week's suggestions but I have given up asking for Tull as it's pretty clear that they won't be played. Not sure why, really, as there is nothing especially non-mainstream about many of their greatest hits...

  • Comment number 80.

    #78,#79,

Scotch, Jim, if yesterday is in the past and "Living in the Past" is mainstream we could have a Tull candidate for Monday.

'Tomorrow belongs to me' - Sensational Alex Harvey Band

I know the song is a pastiche, I know Kander and Ebb are Jews, and I know Alex gave it a positive spin, but that song gives me the heebie-jeebies.

  • Comment number 83.

#81 DC that SAHB track is amazing. It has been discussed on Janet Forsyth's show during an interview with the composer about the ultimate irony of the song in it's various incarnations. I would LOVE for it to be played - it's so good.

  • Comment number 84.

#80 Agreed! It would just boil down to whether the team at GIO like it and don't have too many other tunes that beat it for air time. We shouldn't hold it against them for not playing everything we want.

It would be great to hear some Tull on the show thow, I must say!

  • Comment number 85.

    #83

Does that account for Vic's hairstyle?

  • Comment number 86.

#49 - I'd second one of Madmac's suggestions for Monday...

'Tomorrow Never Knows' - The Beatles
It's not one of the usual day-related Beatles songs and it shows how innovative they were. The Chemical Brothers took a lot of inspiration from this track.

    'Come Together' - Primal Scream
For the sampled speech near the start "Today is a new day...". Song still sounds great and I like the sentiment about "...blues and jazz, all of these are just labels - we know that music is music." It can be my wee olive branch after folk taking the hump with me last week.

  • Comment number 87.

#86 - Were you on some kind of camel ride through the musical desert?

  • Comment number 88.

    Tenuous link to Wednesday's theme:

The wonderful song 'Diner' by Martin Sexton (featured in last night's Roddy Hart show) mentions New York State.

  • Comment number 89.

    Monday:

    * Strawberry Switchblade: Since Yesterday
    * Talk Talk: Today
    * Mika: Love Today

    but also the very lovely
    * Jane: It's a Fine Day (Fine Night Tonight; Fine Day Tomorrow) - preferably the original a capella version, not the dance remix.

  • Comment number 90.

Just looked out of the office window. I'd like to suggest Supertramp's 'It's Raining Again' for the 'Today' theme

#82, any excuse to get SAHB played

  • Comment number 92.

#87 - Well, it involved me complaining about 'Do the Bartman' and Spandau Ballet. If not a desert, not exactly the richest musical landscape either. Feel free to add your own Mirage and Oasis jokes...

I totally forgot to suggest this for Monday:

    'Today' - Smashing Pumpkins
A great uplifting song from when Billy Corgan had hair. No, really! Probably better than the later '1979' which has been played once, I think.

    MONDAY

Bryan Ferry did a version of "All Tomorrow's Parties" but my favourite version is by Japan and also Nico too.

    J.O'B.

P.S. how about this for a theme:

Songs with the words "Get", "It" or "On in the title

    GET Back
    IT Ain't Me Babe
I Put A Spell ON You

    did you know that

Right intro tune went by beat

is an anagram of Get it on with bryan Burnette.

Still think misheard lyrics would be a fun theme......and yes I do have too much time on my hands today.
