Next week's themes....

Bryan Burnett | 11:14 UK time, Friday, 20 March 2009

We had some really enjoyable shows last week and I did smile at some of your suggestions for the songs that sum up married life. The guy who suggested 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' wisely decided to remain anonymous.Ìý

I suspect we'll have a few people writing in under assumed names for Monday's theme of affairs. I'm looking forward to a scandalous evening! leave your confessions on the blog or get in touch during the show.

cheating.jpg

Monday:
After last week's theme of marriage, tonight we are doing affairs...cheating songs and tales of forbidden love are definitely on the menu...

Tuesday:
Roxy John says how about 'Get It On' as a theme. ..songs with get, it or on in the title. How about Get Back, Turn It On Again and On The radio. Suggest one of each and if you can come up with a sequence of three then even better...

Wednesday:
Scotch Git reminds me that we haven't done duets for a while so lets have your suggestions for the best loved and some of the more unusual partnerships...

Thursday:
Graeme Renwick has come up 'songs that are no longer relevant or true' for tonight. Top Of The Pops and Free Nelson Mandella are two that spring to mind. Let's have yours on the email or call in or text during the show...

    How confusing.
    Get back (Beatles)
    Beat It (Michael Jackson
Hold On (Good Charlotte)(- Sad song You Tube Video is a bit of a shocker)

With these titles you won't know whether you're coming or going!

    MONDAY

    'Hunting Girl' - Jethro Tull

  • Comment number 3.

    MONDAY:

Another try for 'You Honour' by Pluto Shervington, where he plays the part of the 'other man', found hiding in the closet holding his clothes. Asked for it before and I'm sure some other bloggers remember it too.

Otherwise, there's always 'Shame and Scandal In The Family',a song about the result of infidelity, with a happy twist at the end. It's an old calypso song, covered by lots of people but I'd like to hear the Ska version by The Blues Busters (please not the Madness version).

  • Comment number 4.

#3. I have Norrie-itis - should have typed 'Your Honour'.

  • Comment number 5.

OK, I'll request the obvious one: 'Your Cheatin Heart'. Personally, I like the Ray Charles version. A graayyyt way to kick off the show

It's the end of the world as we know it, REM.
It's not. At least not yet.

  • Comment number 11.

#8 Julie - you may have hit on a good theme idea there... Running/exercise. You could have loads of suitable tunes like:

Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen (naturally!)
Take The Money And Run - Steve Miller Band
Run To You - Bryan Adams
Run, Baby, Run - Sheryl Crow
The Long Run - The Eagles
Young Hearts Run Free - Candi Staton
Running To Stand Still - U2
    Come Running - Van Morrison
Running With The Night - Lionel Ritchie
Running Up THat Hill - Kate Bush

    Physical - Olivia Newton John
Love Is A Contact Sport - Whitney Houston
    Sports Fans - The Tubes

OK I am starting to run out of ideas now... Anybody else? :-)

  • Comment number 12.

Monday surely can't avoid Matty Groves - not simply an affair, but the lovers caught in flagrante, with murderous results. Fairport Convention's live version (find it on the Archive Series compilation) for preference, but other versions also fine, as the song's the thing.

A lot of potential Thursday songs will be somewhat political; wonder if we'll be treated to The Pogues, or whether it'll still be subject to ´óÏó´«Ã½ censorship after all these years..?

  • Comment number 13.

...and yet another plea for The Imagined Village - this time Cold, Hailey, Rainy Night, with the wonderful Eliza Carthy supplying half the vocals.

  • Comment number 14.

#11. Been done a couple of times already Jim but, if it were to be done again I'd like 'I'm not running anymore' by John Mellencamp.

  • Comment number 15.

further to #14. 'Snickers Kiss' doesn't have quite the same ring to it does it :0)

  • Comment number 16.

    Quiet today Julie?

  • Comment number 17.

#16. JFE had a song played last Friday that seems quite an apt response to that Adam...;0)

Kirsty in Killie got it in one - Be My Downfall by Del Amitri! Great suggestion.

You could also probably play the whole of his wonderful What Is Love For album but I would suggest Where Did I Go.

    Brilliant Disguise - Bruce Springsteen

"Now you play the loving woman
    I'll play the faithfull man
But just don't look too close
into the palm of my hand

Well maybe baby the gypsy lied"

    DC

  • Comment number 23.

#22 Indeed. I couldn't better that list apart from maybe a spot of T-Rex!

  • Comment number 24.

I did not google my list!

  • Comment number 25.

I did use Google a couple of times, especially for the Presidents one last year, but I do prefer to come up with tracks I want to hear and that fit the theme from memory.

Having said that there is nothing really wrong with a spot of Googling as long as it's not taken to excess. I can't see the point of simply listing tracks that fit the theme but that aren't necessarily any good... At the end of the day the show producers won't play them!

  • Comment number 26.

Wednesday;Summer Wine- The Corrs and Bono(fantastic)

Thursday. You would hope that Labe Sifre's 'Something Inside So Strong'is no longer relevant and that apartheid is a thing of the past.

Sixpence None The Wiser 'Kiss Me'.

  • Comment number 32.

#30 Very good point. I looked it up and although Power Station would have argued for Get It On, it seems to be Bang A Gong (Get It On).

But I think the Rexmeisters still qualify! :-)

And if choosing that version would cause the world to implode or something, let's have the Power Station version!

    s/Country/Folk/
(sorry, for the non-geeks: search & replace 'Country' with 'Folk')

Bet you 50p (top of my normal betting range) that I can come up with more Folk songs for the theme than you can Country, and that the Folk ones will average much, much darker.

#41 Julie would have told you - and that is not a kid on!

#42 I will take you on that bet if SG passes.

A few thoughts for Monday's great theme:

    Desire - Ryan Adams
The Dark End of the Street - Linda Ronstadt or Flying Burrito Brothers

    #20 Hey Kene,

Ignore some muppets that don't obviously have the same level of awareness and attempt to conceal their apparent inadequacy by reference to the acknowledged power of the internet... 'it's not as if "all of us" don't have access after all!'

Welcome to the forum its been a while,

GIO ... an obvious inspiration ... well said!

  • Comment number 46.

Whoever suggested Anniversary Song last week by the Cowboy Junkies - it was a great track and one I must admit had slipped me by. I see they refer to it as their one happy song!

  • Comment number 47.

~45 Madamc - you are right it does not matter where you get the suggestion from - lets face we all ahve to start somewhere. I sometimes do a sneaky mini google which is to put for example "get" into my windows media player and see what pops up. I recently got a mp3 player dont know if you can do it with that or not.

I have downloaded 2 songs and to be honest dont get it - whats the point of paying for the downloads, you dont get the artwok, lyrics etc and have nothing tangible! Bring back C90 tapes!!

  • Comment number 48.

Here's a new Dwight Yoakam song I stumbled across which would suit Monday's theme.
I believe it's called Google Map Blues

"My life on this old oil rig
Is hard, the hours are long
The weather's rough, the men are tough
    (They all like country songs)

So when the shift was over
    I replayed Get It On
But the pleasures of the Internet
    Soon turned to horror, son

'Cause I caught my baby cheatin'
As I surfed the web today
Her lover man had parked his van
When Street View passed our way.

So all the world is seein'
    Is a marital disaster
But this toolpushin' fool only sees the drool
Of a dog waiting for his master

    For women can be fickle
    But a dog's a dog for life
So suppress your frustration and buy an Alsatian
    Cause today infidelity's rife

'Cause I caught my baby cheatin'
As I surfed the web today
Her lover man had parked his van
When Street View passed our way."

The benefits of having music digitally don't really kick in until you've got a fair amount digitised, and you suddenly find you've got near instant access to pretty much any track you like.

And the potential for creating mixtapes (hey, isn't that what GiO is?) without spending hours fiddling about with physical product is fantastic. And expanding that to use metadata is just greeeeaaat.

For example: I have approx 72hrs worth of 80s music. To dig up something that tickles my fancy is pretty easy: filter all those I've rated 3/5 or higher, and play the 100 tracks I've listened to least recently in a random order. Instant "Now that's what I call 80s".

Or, use a playlist of lounge music to feed the background music for a party, but explicitly control the order, and every now and then chuck in something very left field.

Or, in 2 seconds flat, find every song with the word "Get" in the title; sort by rating, and that's my first long-list for Tuesday.
