Next week's themes....

Bryan Burnett | 12:51 UK time, Friday, 29 May 2009

Here we go then with another week's themes. Thursday's looks a bit strange when you see it written down but I am sure it's going to work beautifully on air. Sort of...

P1000831.jpgMonday:
We kick off ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Scotland's '30 days in Europe' season with a two hour celebration of the best European records ever made. From Plastic Bertrand to Abba it's Europop like you've never heard it before...

Tuesday:
It's the piano in pop! Who can forget the opening on I Don't Like Mondays or surely this is a good chance to celebrate some of Elton's finest moments? Let's have your suggestions for the best ivory tinkling moments in pop...

Wednesday:

Tonight's theme is sinful behaviour in song. We'll accept any of the deadly sins as well as some of the more modern ones. It's your chance to confess so get on the email with your suggestions...

Thursday:
Tonight is another one of very, very interactive shows where everything will be decided on the night. One rule - the last word of the previous song must be included in the next one. It could run something like this:

Don't Go Breaking My Heart
Heart Like A Wheel
Car Wheels On A Gravel Road
Road to Hell

Could be a tricky show but I suspect it's going to be a lot of fun.

What about Saturday's theme? Or will the hour on Saturday be themeless?

Speaking of Saturday, can you arrange to begin at 17:00 and not 18:00?

Otherwise you clash with Bill Black's Country Show.

I know I can 'Listen Again' but think of the inconvenience!

I'll leave the matter in your capable hands, in the expectation that it will be resolved forthwith.

    Thanking you in advance, S-g

    Gloria - Umberto Tozzi (1979)

See this for some fine usage of the lisp in singing.

Have a good weekend and enjoy coming up with some great ideas for the themes.....

    For example

    Don't Go Breaking My Heart
    Heart of Gold
    Gold Dust Woman
    Woman In Love
    Love to Love You Baby
    Baby Stop Crying
    Crying In The Rain
    Rain and Tears
    Tears In Heaven
    Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now

    MONDAY

    'She' - Charles Aznavour

Many of the show's listeners think that this is an Elvis Costello song.

Remove the veil, let them hear the man sing the song as the song should be sung.

    IMHO

  • Comment number 28.

Glen, I saw your mention of The Rolling Stones for Tuesday and was immediately reminded of the late great Ian Stewart, the original member of that group, who played piano and organ on many of their hits.

I recall as a youngster, the local rumour that a famous band had stayed overnight in Cellardyke (actually next door to where I was brought up and now less than fifty yards from where I am as I type...).

We all thought that it was none other than the Beatles, a new group on the block, and the only 'popstars' who had been heard of in the East Neuk. Little did we know that 'Stu' had founded the greatest band of all time, OK, Pink Floyd might just give them a run for their mega-money.....

Stu's auntie, 'Mrs Wilson', stayed a couple of doors away and made ham and eggs for the Stones that morning. OK, Ian Stewart was born in Pittenweem and is actually what we refer to as a 'Tornerse'. Nevertheless, he was, and I suppose still is, one of my all-time heroes

Bryan, please play 'Lets spend the night together'. Great piano intro.

  • Comment number 29.

And if Babs veto's the Rolling Stones, the next best thing is the Bruce Springsteen 'Live in New York' version of 'Jungleland'

A graaayyyytt way to end the show on Tuesday

  • Comment number 30.

DC are you really in Casablanca? Did you sail there?

Surely the Springsteen piano song should be one of the following:

    Racing In The Street
    The Promise
    Drive All Night

The latter two with the Boss on the piano, but I would be suggesting Racing In The Street.

It's the one with the deep comfy leather sofas, the kind that once you flop into them it's very difficult to get back out. Considering the bar prices that's my excuse anyway......

Why did you have to come to Corinthian?.There are other places....

  • Comment number 32.

re Springsteen piano songs...you light are gonna have me typing in bold capitals soon. There is no contest, not when you're up against the single most perfect recording in musical history. The first song he ever sang on british shores, raw emotional, a song destined to be a classic but never sung as well again.

Not a negative comment to be seen.

    More on Ian Stewart.
Did you know that Ian Rankin modelled Rebus on Ian Stewart?
And that he wrote a song about him a couple of years back that featured on an album called Ballad of the Book?
First and only time `Pittenweem` has been rhymed with `rock and roll dream`

    THE SIXTH STONE
Words by Ian Rankin, music by Aidan Moffat and the Best Ofs

    All the way from Pittenweem
to the rock 'n' roll dream,
all the way from East Neuk, Fife,
    to the R&B life,

Down in dear old London town,
you were the conscience of the band,
and when those Stones they had to roll,
it was you that drove the van,

    All the way from Pittenweem
to the rock 'n' roll dream,
all the way from East Neuk, Fife
    to the R&B life,

But your face just didn't fit,
chiselled like a lump of coal,
and as the groupies came and went,
you'd be on the eighteenth hole,

    Far away from Pittenweem
with the rock 'n' roll dream,
far away from East Neuk, Fife,
    with the R&B life,

So from Beggars through to Exile,
you dug out rhythms like black diamonds,
    but cruising down Route 66,
did you dream of lochs and highlands?

    Did you dream of Pittenweem,
not the rock 'n' roll dream,
did you dream of East Neuk, Fife,
    or the R&B life?

    All the way from Pittenweem
to the rock 'n' roll dream,
all the way from East Neuk, Fife,
Until the end of your life...

In july 77 I was a 15 year old boy scout holidaying at the international scout and guides camp in Kandersteg switzerland. I don't know who's idea it was to send hormonal 15 year old guys from the west of Scotland in amongst teenage girls from all over Europe, but anyway, to our delight we discovered that the local hostelry Simplon Suzie's would serve beer if you were over 14. In the corner was a jukebox and on that jukebox was a song that was played over and over again. We just new it as the sexy song because of the female moaning over the intro. Six months later it was a Uk no.1. It was cheesy to the extreme but it'll always remind me of being legally served my first bottle of beer high up in the alps... and the blonde belgian penpal I acquired along the way.

So for euro night....play the sexysong

Not everybody likes Roxette, of course, but compared to many many other acts in their 'euro niche' they have had a degree of longevity and produced a body of tracks that have real credibility. Not only that, but they are a brilliant live act and have received numerous awards for their output. I caught them live in Belgium once and I have to say I was really surprised at how good they were - amazing band, brilliant set, and lots of really good songs. Trust me - they will be cool again!

These aren't the droids you're looking for...

#72 - The thing is Paulo, and I've said this before, where the Baccara song falls down for me is that I can't imagine a gent in a 70's disco coming out with the line:
"Excuse me young lady, but can you boogie?"
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Julie, Marie or Jan have been asked that in the past, I don't know...
I am also curious to know what that "certain song" was.

#81 Maybe they could play Suicide 23mins Over Brussels cd! Probably not!

My guess on that certain song would be
Get up and boogie / Silver Convention

Perhaps they like to be dominated and just have to be telt

Hello. For the European show on Monday, how about a track from Belgian group dEUS? My two favourites are the singles Little Arithmetics and Theme From Turnpike.

    Good stuff.

    Raymie in Consett.

Europop, a bit of a difficult one as the few I know have already been requested, and I refuse to go for the Irish as that is too easy and I think not quite in the spirit of the theme. Plus the likes of Tatu will just get me started off on a tangent that will end in major self moderation, but probably too late. So, how about Zucherro and Paul Young Senza una Donna', or Trio and 'Da, Da, Da'.

NB I just know that apart from the stuff already requested I will listen tonight and recognise so many things that I had forgotten / didn't realise they were euro.

Monday - Kleenex "You", or the flip-side "U" (with an umlaut). Swiss neo-punk that should have been bigger. The band was also known as Liliput if you're searching the net and likely to play it...

I thought on Giorgio Moroder as well - his solo single Son Of My Father or anything from the Scarface Soundtrack would be good but his work on the Sparks album No.1 Song In Heaven is brilliant, title track would be great.

Which got me thinking through the link with Keith forsey that Boney M will bound to be played and Nighflight to Venus is a bit of an oddity.

You could reduce us Neil Young fans to tears with their cover of Heart of gold.

For Monday Max B Gold is thinking along the lines of Tarzan Boy by Baltimora as it reminds him of the France/Spain/Portugal Road trip of '85 in the Hillman Hunter.

Or going back to 82 and Harry Klorkestein's fantastic "Oh oh Den Haag" or Nina's 99 Luft Balloons which always seemed to be on the juke box in the pub in Hoodekenskerke.

Those were the days when Max worked in the pickled onion factory in Holland. I say pickled onions but we also did gherkins too and it's only fair that they should also get a mention.

After the success of O o Den Haag had died, was nothing more of Harry Klorkestein learned.

Methinks the Tull/Bragg nexus is going to have to expand and rename itself as the Tull/Bragg/Rundgren nexus...

I dont know who blogged the refernce but glas I now know what a Fender Rhodes is and amazingly then I was watching an outstanding clip with Tift Merrit playing her song Good Hearted Man solo on one. Brilliant.

Roy Bittan is on an incredible amount of lps from artists as diverese as Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, Bowie etc etc. From his work I would like to nominate the following track:

Bob Seger - Roll Me Away, brilliant Seger track with a great intro

The other artist I associated with the piano, although he does play guitar as well is Jackson Browne. He has many many great piano based tracks including Fountain of Sorrow, Befor the Deluge, For A Dancer. My favourite song of his though is

Jackson Browne - Sky Blue and Black

I would also like to give honourable mentions to the following:

David Sancious (Springsteen Incident on 57th Street)
Neil Young (Tracy Chapman - All That Have Is Your Soul)
Steve Nieve (Costello - Olivers Army)
Mikey Gallacher (Clash - Wrong Em Boyo)

You could do a mega list and we are going to have Elton, and why not, lets make it a good one:

Elton John - I Want Love

And seconding Werevolves and Alladin sane.
