Saturday night anthems...

Bryan Burnett | 20:02 UK time, Tuesday, 30 June 2009

It's been a very busy afternoon in the GIO office. We've had great fun trying to come up for good themes for our Sixties season which begins next week. Fear not it won't be two weeks of Sixties music but rather an attempt to use some of the key events of the Sixties to inspire our themes.
We have also been putting together songs for a special edition of Get It On...at the weekend which is going to be broadcast later in the month. One of the best bits of the weekend show has been hearing about the songs that get you in the mood for Saturday night so I want to do a whole show of them.
I think we all had certain songs that were always played as you got ready in the house before heading out on a Saturday night. Mine varied from George Benson to Echo and the Bunnymen depending on what the occasion was.
Have a think about what yours might be and leave your suggestions on the blog if you fancy...

Next Week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 18:58 UK time, Saturday, 27 June 2009

Here we go with this week's list of themes. Blog your suggestions or email, add them to our new Facebook page or just call or text during the show. Looking forward to another good week...
humanleague.jpg
Monday
Do you promise to love, honour and cherish. Tonight's theme is wedding vows - conventional or unconventional!

Tuesday
What is your favourite tv theme tune? Tony Hatch, composer of theme tunes for Neighbours and Crossroads, is 70 today so let's celebrate with the best music to come out of the small screen.

Wednesday
What are the songs you love to drum along to? The tunes that make it impossible for you to sit still? A toe tapping, finger clicking, air drumming special tonight.

Thursday
Songs about 'want' or 'don't want' tonight. 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' or 'I Don't Want A Lover'? We want to hear from you!

Army Dreamers...

Bryan Burnett | 17:37 UK time, Saturday, 27 June 2009

veterans1.jpgToday was Armed Forces day which was a chance for people around the country to show their support for the men and women who make up the armed forces. I was asked to be the MC in the entertainment tent at Glasgow's event which was hosted by the Lord Provost and attended by the Scottish Secretary and many other dignitaries. However, the real VIPs were the hundreds of veterans who attended the event and gave us the chance to show our gratitude for the sacrifices they made in conflicts over the years. I was particularly pleased to meet the women of the Auxillary Territorial Service (ATS) which was the women's service in the British Army during the Second World War. It was great to sit and chat and hear about the experiences of these amazing women and what they did in the war. Susan Sinclair (that's her in the picture below) told me about her War which involved spending five weeks on a boat sailing to Egypt where she was stationed at El Alamein, working in a PoW camp. I really did consider it an honour to get to hear their stories. veterans2.jpgÌý

The King of Pop leaves the throne...

Bryan Burnett | 23:42 UK time, Friday, 26 June 2009

michaeljackson1.jpg24 hours ago most of us were settled on the couch watching telly, listening to music or just chilling out when the texts started to arrive. " Put the news on, Michael Jackson's dead" said the first one. "unconfirmed" added the more cautious friends.
His sudden death and the reaction to it is being compared to Presley, Kennedy and Diana, but this is the first global celebrity whose death has been Tweeted and Facebooked in tandem with more conventional news reporting. I'm sure I wasn't the only one simultaneously watching TV, swamping the already overloaded celebrity websites, logging onto Facebook, and texting.
There are acres of coverage talking about his music, his impact on the entertainment world and how his bizarre private life helped redefine celebrity culture. Every detail of his life is out there an pored over in microscopic detail. No point in links, it's everywhere. Go read it and join in the debate. However if you do want a link see what you think of excellent Gary Younge talking about how Jackson died a "transracial experiment" .Whilst we could argue for hours about his private life and effect it had on how we perceived him, there can be no debate about his status as one of the greatest, if not the greatest pop star ever. He came up with the name King of Pop but there is no dispute about his claim to be pop royalty.
His cultural contribution cannot be underestimated - the way he brought black music to the mainstream, his work as a pop video innovator and the huge influence he had on others - not just with his music but more for his remarkable dancing. Tonight he's being compared with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. You can see it every week on shows like Britain's Got Talent - a generation of street dancers still sampling his songs and snaffling his moves.
The world's greatest pop star sold 750 million records in his lifetime. No one will ever do that again. At least two of his albums would be on most top tens of the greatest albums ever made.
Obviously clips of Michael Jackson have become Youtube's most watched. Take your pick from the footage of the ten year old with the heavenly voice moving like he's James Brown's mini me, to the Motown 25th anniversary concert where his dizzying performance of Billie Jean set the standard for great entertainers. When you watch it now it still takes your breath away and of course leaves you a little bit sad.
This programme is all about great pop music and sharing our love of the genre, so on Saturday's show I am keen to get your stories of how his songs made you feel. Leave your comments here, take a look at our Facebook page or why not email them in.

Speedy suggestions...

Bryan Burnett | 18:06 UK time, Wednesday, 24 June 2009

speed.jpgSpeed is a scalar quantity with dimensions length/time; the equivalent vector quantity to speed is velocity. Speed is measured in the same physical units of measurement as velocity, but does not contain the element of direction that velocity has. Speed is thus the magnitude component of velocity. It's also tonight's theme. We've got a couple of minutes before the show starts ( we're currently on the sports news) so I thought I would put up a quick appeal for tonight's show. Will it be Life In The Fast Lane or Speed of Sound? Don't hang about now...

Oddest song of the night has been Jim from Erskine's suggestion of Roy Orbison's Fastest Guitar Alive ( shaped like a lovely woman according to Roy.) It was the title of a movie which featured Roy in the title role as a secret agent whose guitar shot bullets! Here's the to the fansite I mentioned on air and also photographic evidence of the instrument that has rattling strings like a gattling gun - whatever that is...

Birthing tunes...

Bryan Burnett | 17:30 UK time, Tuesday, 23 June 2009

BarbaraBaby.jpgWas it Salt and Pepa's Push It? The Prodigy's Breathe or perhaps Feel the Pain by Dinosaur Jr? I'm looking for your maternity ward mixtapes tonight and as I have never given birth before I've got someone in who has.
Miss Babs will be producing tonight and will have plenty of empathy for your tales of 48 hour labour. That's her in the pic having given birth to her second child. It will be good to have someone who's been there and done it, but I worry if she's able to handle it emotionally.
She claims to burst into tears every time she hears Simply Red's For Your Babies so I don't know if she's going to be the best person to be in charge in the studio. Maybe I'll have an epidural standing by for when Mick starts singing. It might not stop her greetin' but it will certainly deaden the pain for me.

Facing facts...

Bryan Burnett | 17:39 UK time, Monday, 22 June 2009

facebookpage.jpg'Bryan Burnett of Get It On became a fan of Get It On with Bryan Burnett.' I know,Ìýit sounds horribly egotistical doesn't it? It's all because of our new which was launched last week. In order to invite pals to join our page I had to become a fan of myself which is a ridiculous thing to do.
My plan was to become a fan for five minutes, invite everyone I know to join up, then I could secretly drop out and just go back to being 'Bryan Burnett of Get It On', rather thanÌý'a fan of Bryan Burnett of Get It On.'
However, I have just realised that if I do drop out then Facebook sends everyone a message to let them know that 'Bryan Burnett is no longer a fan of Get It On with Bryan Burnett.' Maybe not theÌýsignal I want to send out!

Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 18:05 UK time, Saturday, 20 June 2009

It's time for me to reveal next week's themes and as usual please don't be shy about getting in touch.Tuesday night's theme will be an interesting one I suspect. What were the tunes that helped you through childbirth! Obviously it's not a theme that everyone can take part in but hopefully in the rest of the week you'll find something you can contribute to.
bryanadams.jpg
MONDAY 22 JUNE
We'll play 'anything' and 'everything' tonight. Paul from Ayr has suggested songs with either or both these words in the title. 'You To Me Are Everything' or 'Do Anything You Wanna Do'? Let me know what you want to hear.

TUESDAY 23 JUNE
Tonight's show will be a labour of love as I'm looking for the songs that were playing when your child was born. What was on your maternity ward mixtape?

WEDNESDAY 24 JUNE
Tonight's theme is speed so I could play 'Fast Car', 'Speed of Sound' or 'Slow Hand'. Don't hang about and get your suggestions in for tonight's theme.

THURSDAY 25 JUNE
School's out! Obviously that well known Alice Cooper ditty is a must for tonight's show but why not leave a comment on the blog and let me know the songs that represent freedom and adventure to you.

A sound idea

Bryan Burnett | 18:05 UK time, Thursday, 18 June 2009

getitonsoundtownbw.jpgToday was an interesting day for the GIO team- especially since the production team were total 'newbies'! I'm Rachel and I was part of the production team from Alva Academy that was allowed to work with Bryan and Barbara to produce Thursday night's 'Get It On'.

There was a total of six pupils from Alva; Amy, Jordan, Hannah, Grant, Scott and myself, and I think it's safe to say, we had the time of our lives! It was a once in a lifetime experience and more than we could have ever imagined.

The production meeting was one of my favourite moments; I think we were all expecting a big table and a lot of formalities, but in fact, it was the total opposite, and it was a great way of finding out what to expect from the show.

Personally, I found it scary to think that a group of fifteen and sixteen year-olds would be producing a popular radio show on a Thursday night on national radio, but at the time of writing, I'm confident that the show will be awesome (I expect comments to confirm this ;) )! The production meeting produced an eclectic mix of music to suit the tastes of everyone at the meeting and hopefully, all the listeners too!

It was amazing to feel like part of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ team, even if it was just for one evening, and it was a great experience to be able to do something on the scale of 'Get It On'. All of us felt as though it was one of the best days of our lives, and we all enjoyed the tasks we were set.

Finally, a massive thank you to Bryan, Barbara and the rest of the team at the ´óÏó´«Ã½!

Web of delights...

Bryan Burnett | 17:22 UK time, Wednesday, 17 June 2009

ellisandclarke.jpgA couple of plugs for stuff on the website this week: I loved this week's Ellis and Clarke show. It's a great start to their new series which goes out on Friday nights at ten past six. This week's show had a very funny demonic guest appearance from Shellsuit Bob as Beelzeboab and I did laugh out loud at the old lady's wartime diary. Elaine Ellis is truly a woman of a thousand voices, although Des does make a very convincing female presenter of the lunchtime TV show 'Slack Lassies'. You can listen again here.

alabama.jpgI've also been browsing our comprehensive online coverage of the Rockness festival. The photos really capture what looks like a fab weekend and there's tons of video and audio clips to enjoy. There are also our exclusive campervan sessions, the best of which features Alabama3 doing an acoustic version of John Prine's Speed of the Sound of Loneliness.

Me and Miss Babs down by the schoolyard...

Bryan Burnett | 17:42 UK time, Monday, 15 June 2009

alva1.jpgMeet my new production team. The more observant among you will have noticed that they are a bit more fresh faced and youthful looking than the old lot. "What's going on here then?" I hear you ask. "Is this Radio Scotland's desperate attempt to attract the yoof audience, or is Bryan so worried about being out of touch that he'll not work with anyone over the age of seventeen?"

Fear not, Miss Babs, Mandi and the rest of the team have not been carted off to the home for the bewildered but for one night only the show will be produced by the pupils of this year's Soundtown school which is Alva Academy.

I had an enjoyable morning at the school today where six pupils auditioned for a role on the show and pitched us their ideas for themes. Some of the themes were very good indeed and I'm looking forward to using them over the next few weeks.

The 'new production team' have chosen their theme for Thursday and it's going to be artists with colours in their name. Lots of names to choose from: Deacon Blue, Pink and Deep Purple were just three that were suggested this morning.

The Soundtown pupils are a very confident, enthusiastic and bright bunch of kids so I genuinely am looking forward to working with them on Thursday.

Next week's themes....

Bryan Burnett | 17:42 UK time, Saturday, 13 June 2009

Here's how they line up for next week. As always don't be shy about getting on the email or text, especially if you've never been in touch before. make this the week you get your first song played on Get It On...

cities.jpgMonday:
Whether you're 'Drowning in Berlin' or 'Throwing Your Arms Around Paris' make sure you don't miss tonight's theme of European cities in song. As part of our '30 days in Europe' season we're looking for the pop songs influenced by the continent's greatest places...

Tuesday:
There are diamonds, limousines and lashings of gold on tonight's Get It On. It's the perfect antidote to the recession as we celebrate opulence and excess.

Wednesday:
"All" or "nothing" are the key words for tonight's theme. Will we keep going 'All Night Long' or does nothing really compare to you?

Thursday:
Tonight show will be produced by the pupils of Alva Academy, this year's Soundtown school. They'll be choosing the theme, so all will be revealed later in the week....

Greece is the word...

Bryan Burnett | 20:20 UK time, Thursday, 11 June 2009

babsingreece.jpgWho would have thought that a former Miss Faliraki would end up producing a show on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Scotland, but that's the shocking revelation that emerged during tonight's show.

I had asked for your holiday memories as part of our '30 Days in Europe' season. Little did I know that our very own Miss Babs would fess up on air to having been the former holder of the aforementioned title. She's just rather snipply informed me that it was not a beauty contest, "It was more of a talent contest - kind of!" I'll spare you the details but it's clearly not the kind of talent contest that Susan Boyle will find herself entering anytime soon.

The holiday memories were flooding in on the text tonight and here's a selection of them. If you missed the show, the playlist is online and you can follow the usual links to listen again. The Team's holiday snaps are now also online and you can view them in the Get It On gallery.

Body Talk by Imagination became toilet talk in Benitses, Corfu as 8 guys shared 2 toilets and dubious plumbing and a basket for used poo paper, nightmare! No flushing allowed. Was that 1980? I'm not sure but Charles and Diana got married that summer. Gerry McGuigan in Bishopbriggs

Hello Brian. In 1991 my girlfriend and I, on holiday in crete, were walking around listening - one earphone each attached to a tape walkman - to sting's version of 'little wing'. We arrived at our destination halfway through the song so I pressed the stop button. At that precise moment a couple walking ha nd in hand towards us were singing ... 'little wing' at exactly the same point in the song that the tape had stopped at. My girlfriend and I just looked at each other in amazement. An unforgettable moment. John in Livingston.

Take it to the bridge...

Bryan Burnett | 17:39 UK time, Wednesday, 10 June 2009

petshop.jpg

It's the "Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend" bit in We Can Work It Out. It's the "Father forgive, I tried not do it" bit in It's A Sin and when Martin Fry claimed to go from "One extreme to another" that was a middle eight.
Tonight's theme of 'great middle eights' may sound a bit muso but it's hopefully one that everyone can join in with.

The middle eight or bridge is the bit of the song that breaks up the traditional verse/chorus/verse structure and is often used to pause in the middle of a song before reaching for the climax. You can get more info here.

So what we're looking for are the songs that go off in a different direction somewhere in the middle. Best one I've seen suggested so far is the "Oh let our love survive" line from Suspicious Minds. If you can think of a better one then get one the email right now...

andy.jpg

Oh dear - Norrie has just emailed me this which is the clip of Victoria Principal and Andy Gibb doing All I Have To Is Dream. Worse - Miss Babs has just texted to say she was one of the poor deluded souls who actually bought the thing!!!

Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 16:04 UK time, Friday, 5 June 2009

I have finally emerged from recovery after Thursday night's show. It was an exhilarating two hours of live radio and thanks to everyone who took part and made it such a fun night. If you missed the show you can of course listen again but on this occasion I don't know if it will sound the same. Because of the spontaneous nature of the theme and because presenter, producer and listeners had no idea what was going to be played next you kinda had to be there!Ìý

This week's themes are the usual mixed bunch and I hope you enjoy. Tuesday's theme is a clever suggestion and I am hoping the sun our is out for Thursday night's 'holiday hits'. We will have a holiday photo album up on line before then and I would love to see some of your snaps. If you fancy joining I the fun and letting us put your pics on the album then email them in.Ìý

You can also email your songs for the week or leave them on the blog. Good to see some new bloggers appearing this week. Welcome to the page and don't be shy with your suggestions...

heatwave.jpg

Monday:
From Wicked Games to Solitaire, from Games Without Frontiers to Poker Face, playing games is the theme tonight. Get in touch with your suggestions and let us know the 'games people play'....

Tuesday:
Julie in the Borders has come up with a great theme of 'any Tom, Dick or Harry'. That could mean Tom Jones, Richard Carpenter or even a bit of Debbie Harry! Why not come up with all three?

Wednesday:

Great middle eights is the theme. Join me as we take it to the bridge. If you are unsure what a middle eight is then follow this link. Get on the email with your suggestions...

Thursday:
As part of our Thirty Days In Europe season, we're looking for your holiday hits. What were the songs that came back from the Costa Del Sol and into the charts. Listen out for the tunes that will make the holiday memories come flooding back ...

Saturday Night Fever...

Bryan Burnett | 18:09 UK time, Thursday, 4 June 2009

saturday.jpgHow about you let me spend the weekend with you? It's an offer unlike nay I have made before but you all know how I feel about the listeners of this show.
Get It On...at the weekend starts this Saturday night at five past six.
The new show will run throughout the summer and will be a chance for us to have a bit of fun in a new timeslot. I'm quite excited about it as I rather like the idea of being part of the fun of Saturday night. I always used to have the radio on as I got ready to go out, teasing my ginger locks into a quiff and trying to get out the crease my mother had ironed into my jeans.
In fact my first radio shows were in the same timeslot as this new one. Hopefully I'll be a bit more polished than I was twenty years ago!
The show will be a good chance to catch up with some of the songs I've not had a chance to play, plus we'll have some more spontaneous themes. I would also like you to choose the opening track. Who is going to have the honour of choosing the first ever song of a brand new show? Suggestions on the blog please and all will be revealed on Saturday night!

Knees up Mrs Mills...

Bryan Burnett | 17:44 UK time, Tuesday, 2 June 2009

The piano takes centre stage tonight and a search for the great piano players led me to Mrs Mills. She was an artist who was tailor made for Britain's Got Talent when such a thing was just a twinkle in Simon Cowell's eye. Mrs Mills was working as head of the typing pool at the paymaster general's office when she was spotted by a talent scout at a local golf club dance. She went on to sell millions of LPs, share studio space with The Beatles and be managed by the guy who managed the Stones in their early days! On top of all that she has also provided us with undoubtedly the album sleeve of the night. Clearly there ain't no party like a Mrs Mills party... mrsmillsparty.jpg

What's the frequency Bryan?

Bryan Burnett | 17:47 UK time, Monday, 1 June 2009

As sad as I am to wave my Sportsound colleagues off on their summer break I am delighted to relieve them of their frequencies! Yes, it's that time of year when the footie is off and we get the chance to offer you even more music than before. The first bit of good news is that during the summer Get It On will be on FM, MW, online and importantly on digital as well. ( Although tonight we don't get the keys ofÌýMW till 7pm as there's a programme about the European election airing on medium wave.)

Looking forward to getting my hands on the MW button...fm.jpgThe other news is that from this Saturday we'll be Getting It On at the weekend with an hour long show at five past six every week. It'll be a chance for me to catch up with some of the great suggestions I've missed out on during the week as well as letting you nominate tracks for some more spur of the moment themes. I hope you're able to make GIO part of your Saturdays over the summer...
