Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 16:04 UK time, Friday, 5 June 2009

I have finally emerged from recovery after Thursday night's show. It was an exhilarating two hours of live radio and thanks to everyone who took part and made it such a fun night. If you missed the show you can of course listen again but on this occasion I don't know if it will sound the same. Because of the spontaneous nature of the theme and because presenter, producer and listeners had no idea what was going to be played next you kinda had to be there!Ìý

This week's themes are the usual mixed bunch and I hope you enjoy. Tuesday's theme is a clever suggestion and I am hoping the sun our is out for Thursday night's 'holiday hits'. We will have a holiday photo album up on line before then and I would love to see some of your snaps. If you fancy joining I the fun and letting us put your pics on the album then email them in.Ìý

You can also email your songs for the week or leave them on the blog. Good to see some new bloggers appearing this week. Welcome to the page and don't be shy with your suggestions...

Monday:
From Wicked Games to Solitaire, from Games Without Frontiers to Poker Face, playing games is the theme tonight. Get in touch with your suggestions and let us know the 'games people play'....

Tuesday:
Julie in the Borders has come up with a great theme of 'any Tom, Dick or Harry'. That could mean Tom Jones, Richard Carpenter or even a bit of Debbie Harry! Why not come up with all three?

Wednesday:

Great middle eights is the theme. Join me as we take it to the bridge. If you are unsure what a middle eight is then follow this link. Get on the email with your suggestions...

Thursday:
As part of our Thirty Days In Europe season, we're looking for your holiday hits. What were the songs that came back from the Costa Del Sol and into the charts. Listen out for the tunes that will make the holiday memories come flooding back ...

More often than not it was just pinned onto the carpet. We all had player pools with silly names and a transfer budget for buying names from each other. We had a disciplinary system too. If you committed a foul and the other player fell over it was a booking. It broke my heart when I couldn't afford a seven inch single from my pocket money in the weeks I had to buy Glue. At one point my inside right had a huge big blob of glue for a shinbone.

  • Comment number 18.

Emdy remember a guy called Tony Monopoly. Remember seeing him win opportunity knocks or new faces or something. I take it he was the only one with that particular surname.

  • Comment number 19.

I think he did a eurovision song?

  • Comment number 20.

Paolo I must salute your memory - the book I have lists his single as Leave A Little Love, where on earth you pulled that one from! Amazing!!

Monday - Here's a reminder that somebody (Adam?) mentioned that my request for Stephen BISHOP - 'On and On' for the GIO themed show would be good for a future games theme.

    # 24 brilliant.

Monopoly is the greatest board game of all. What about an entire theme about the Monopoly streets at some time in the future?

For Monday, I think Wizzard's 'Angel Fingers' is the nearest to Islington we can get to paying the £6 landing fee on the light blues...

    MONDAY

'Reynard in Paradise' - Michael Marra

    TUESDAY

'Ballad of Ira Hayes' - Richard (Kinky) Friedman

    WEDNESDAY

'Bridge Over Troubled Water' - Simon & Garfunkel

  • Comment number 33.

Another thought for Monday night: Hollow and Blue by the Sonic Hearts (think hedgehogs).

For Thursday, I wil stick with the two I suggested on 27th May:
    Que sera - Diego Torres
    Gulf of Mexico - Alabama
    plus
Is this love by Bob Marley (played constantly in Antigua 2 years ago)
and I guess you also have to play Summer Holiday by Cliff and the Shadows. We always play it in the car as we head to the airport (and when we went to Antigua I found a fabulous steel band version).

Struggling with middle 8s for now.

    Have a good weekend.

Well if we're including hedgehogs (and I'm not sure why we would be), then can we have The Incredible String Band's Hedgehog Song.

(note to fans: not that Hedgehog Song, which wouldn't be playable in this slot)

    Welcome, Annie McGuire!

    (be still, my foolish heart)

Bryan knows even less about football than I do, but Annie knows much, much more.
Which means I can request these, in the sure and certain knowledge that she realises one is a tribute to a goalie, and the other about the fox who ran onto a floodlit pitch in Glasgow's East-end during a Celtic v Aberdeen match.

    MONDAY

    'Hamish' - Michael Marra

'Reynard in Paradise' - Michael Marra

    MONDAY: GAMES

Roxy Music 'Take A Chance With Me' a great single over-shadowed by the less interesting but better known Avalon & More Than This.

Bryan Ferry 'The Name Of The Game' far from his best. This was co-written by Pat Leonard who co-wrote Live To Tell with Madonna and sounds pretty similar.

Paulo, I was asked that question once in a pub quiz in the Tiberian peninsula. It was a real Trek getting there but I must say that the pub landlord was very Enterprising that night and made sure that all of us Warped types went to Kirk the next day to make up for our Spocking behaviour. Somebody sneaked a few cases of Rome-ulan ale over the border and we all ended up Mind-Melded!

    I'll get my coat...

    # 11 Snakes and Ladders wisnae The Skids, it was TV21.

The two bands did play Ayr Pavilion in Dec. 1980 (TV21 were support)in one of the best concerts I've been to. A Woman In Winter was the current Skids single and they played it at twice cos they were running out of encores - truly brilliant night.

Good to read about the Subbuteo leagues..remember the difficulties of away games ? One venue would be burny knees and a shag pile carpet, the next could be Posh Peter who actually did play Table Soccer on a table - unheard of down here !!

    Hey Annie, tell James - Airdrie 0 Ayr 1, Airdrie 0 Ayr 1, Airdrie 0 Ayr 1

    Monday...Snakes and Ladders...TV21

  • Comment number 68.

  • Comment number 69.

#67 Must be same title different song. The skids track was on the free lp which came with initial copies of the Absolute Game lp. I have not heard of TV21 but will check them out, when I saw the Skids on that tour it was The Books who supported, briliant brilliant gig.

    Thanks for the pointer!

Are ye nae prefairin the Aiberdeen version?

If I told you I had a Cellardyke version thirty years ago, I would be making myself open to breach of copyright.

    So I didn't...

There aren't enough streets in Cellardyke! I'd set it in Anster - I couldn't pass the chippy without going!

  • Comment number 96.

Anster??? (Cough, splutter...) We didn't have 'Go to jail', we had 'Go to Anster'!

There were enough streets, even way back then. Four bus stops, a Community Council and a Chancers section (each with their own wee tale before the punchline fine or reward)

But I didn't do that of course because it was against the rules

Ha ha lads! "all midweek professionalism went out the window" ...I'm impressed you thought it was there midweek! But a promise is a promise so I'll sort out the Floyd track for Saturday....that is unless I forget!

Enjoy Annie tonight..who knows maybe she is a secret Jethro Tull fan!

So, Annie, you went to school with Colin.

This would be, what, four, maybe five years ago?

Annie, Babs has suggested that you are well disposed towards the music of our very own Ian Anderson.
After Chas and Dave, anything is possible!
