Saturday night anthems...
It's been a very busy afternoon in the GIO office. We've had great fun trying to come up for good themes for our Sixties season which begins next week. Fear not it won't be two weeks of Sixties music but rather an attempt to use some of the key events of the Sixties to inspire our themes.
We have also been putting together songs for a special edition of Get It On...at the weekend which is going to be broadcast later in the month. One of the best bits of the weekend show has been hearing about the songs that get you in the mood for Saturday night so I want to do a whole show of them.
I think we all had certain songs that were always played as you got ready in the house before heading out on a Saturday night. Mine varied from George Benson to Echo and the Bunnymen depending on what the occasion was.
Have a think about what yours might be and leave your suggestions on the blog if you fancy...

From Apache by the Shadows to Gimme Shelter by The Stones, two weeks would not be enough to play a fraction of the pearls from this decade.
Most subsequent music since can be traced directly to an orginal idea from the Sixties, when it was usually better executed and had more wit, integrity and soul.

In the 70s and 80s I knew quite a few guys who would stay in on a Saturday night (DC for one. He got married when he was 14 and a 1/2 and hasnt been allowed out since).
So for them it was Saturday night TV shows that fired up their weekends, so how about some songs for them.
Here's a list (all are genuine recordings except for one I made up. Haven't found one for Yarwood yet):
Bruce Forsyth When I See An Elephant Fly
Larry Grayson - Shut That Door
Morecambe and Wise Bring Me Sunshine
Mike Yarwood One of those songs he sang after saying and this is me
Little & Large Rock Steady
Russ Abbot - Atmosphere
Cannon and Ball Rock On Tommy
Two Ronnies Up Cat Pole Cat (as Jehosophet and Jones)
Black and White Minstrels - Lil Liza Jane
Val Doonican Walk Tall
Andy Williams - Moon River
Paul Daniels Me and Debbie McGee
Ken Dodd - Tears
Basil Brush Boom Boom Song
Theme from Jimll Fix It
Telly Savalas (Kojak) - If
Dick Emery If You Love Her
Leslie Crowther Great Xmas Pudding Song
David Soul (Starsky and Hutch) Silver lady
Easily a show's worth there but if not you can always tap into Summertime Special's archives. Get some Roy Walker and Showaddywaddy.

It has been asked for. On more than one occasion. Think we'll need another long song theme though to get it on.
Back in the early to mid 70's I used to go out every saturday night....to play fitba in the street. We had floodlights right along the street even though they had orange bulbs.
In the late 70's and early 80's the student life put paid to my sporting existence when I discovered that universities were a fountain of knowledge where people went to drink.
At that time Shot by both sides / Magazine was my gettin ready to go out and see whatever band was playin in the student union that night song. It lasted just over 3 minutes which meant I could get ready and still hang about and wait for the song finishing.

Damn, arranged to meet my parents (now living in Southron Pairts) @ Kelvingrove today, not realising that it was Care in the Community day for Knuckledraggers (and other unwelcome hangers on to what I'm assured is an entirely innocent event for an organisation that doesn't tolerate anti-social behaviour in any form. Apart from the singing of sectarian songs, loud sweariewords and wee-ing in the topiary, apparently)
Didn't realise until we got to University Avenue, by which time it was a bit late.
