Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:23 UK time, Thursday, 8 October 2009

marie.jpgFrom singing siblings to Careless Memories it promises to be another interesting week on the show. From this week I'll be announcing the themes in an online video which you can watch on the Get It On homepage.
We'll film a new one every Thursday and get them up online in time for the weekend. "You'll need to remember to smarten yourself up on a Thursday then", said one of our online team. Ha! Was she hinting that my usual Mon-Wed attire is not up to scratch? I must admit that when I see my colleagues in TV strolling around the building in their smart shirts and shiny shoes, I am grateful that I can come into the studio in my crumpled jeans and t shirt and not have to worry. Apart from a Thursday that is.

As always I am keen to get as wide a mix as possible for the themes. Whether it's edgy and alternative or straight down the middle of the road, we'll always try and find a space for it on the show. After all we did play Kenneth McKellar and Biffy Clyro on the same show last week.

Monday

Clearly we won't want to miss Marie Osmond's 50th birthday so I thought we would feature singing siblings for tonight's show. It's brothers and sisters who both share a talent like Kylie and Danni, Ray and Dave, Craig and Charlie, Don and Phil....and if you MUST Matt and Luke...

Tuesday

Martin in Dunfermline suggests songs that feature words your kids don't like. So that's anything featuring fab, groovy or waay out! But I thought we might expand the theme and feature bands that make your kids ashamed to know you! And kids - do get in touch and tell us about the items in your mum and dad's CD collection that make you totally embarrassed?

Wednesday

Scotch Git suggests 'memory and recollection' as a theme tonight. So that could Johnny Remember Me, Carless memories, or Too Good to be forgotten. Don't forget to get in touch with your suggestions...

Thursday

Would it have been Elvis in Vegas, The Smiths at the Caird Hall or Spandau Ballet at the Blitz club. What are the best gigs you never got to. The theme has been suggested by Gaie Brown on our Facebook page. Tickets on sale Thursday night at ten past six...

    MONDAY

    Happy Birthday, Marie!

Tuesday, October 20th will be the 32nd anniversary of the plane crash in Mississippi in which the two pilots and four of the passengers, Dean Kilpatrick, Ronnie Van Zant and siblings Steve & Cassie Gaines lost their lives.
For this evening I'd like to request a song written by lead guitarist Steve Gaines. His sister Cassie was one of the female backing singers.

'Ain't No Good Life' - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Great themes again. Initial thoughts are:

Wednesday - Memories: I remember you - Steve Earle/Emmylou Harris

Thursday - the best gigs you never got to:
Long story, short:- Springsteen tour announced. Work/holiday commitments made Hamburg the only viable option. Bought flights/booked hotel first. Failed to get tickets online. Travelled hoping to buy tickets at the stadium only to discover the concert had been postponed until 27 June (2005). Great weekend, great city, but missed Bruce.

    I was havin a bit bother gettin my brain in gear for Monday's theme but my wife Val came to my aid, so for her;
The Jacksons - Can You Feel It
Bee Gees - Too Much Heaven
Sparks - This Town Aint Big Enough
    Carpenters - Only Yesterday
    Others started to come to me then;
Proclaimers - Sunshine on Leith (never got it played last week)
Magic Numbers - Forever Lost (2 brother/sister pairs in this band)
    Cranberries - Dreams (Hogan brothers)
Undertones - You Got My Number (O'Neil brothers)

    Thursday
    I was lookin at The Charlatans for Monday night, they had members Rob and Mark Collins but they weren't brothers. Rob was killed in a car crash in 96 one week before supporting Oasis at Knebworth, that's got to count as an all time great gig so;
Oasis - Live Forever (Their tribute to Rob Collins that night)
    or preferably
Charlatans - Anything you might have in the GIO library by them'd be fab

    wed
Sorrento Moon (I remember) / Tina Arena
Don't Forget to dance / The Kinks

    Thu
Still the same / Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band
from any concert anywhere, the band I regret most never having seen.

It was a long day yesterday. OK, I didn't read the themes too clearly so missed out the "never" in the brief

Yes I was there as you well know Paolo.

Hows about I change that to the Springsteen Concert at Hammersmith Odeon 1975 when the Boss sang for the first time on British soil. "Thunder Road" from that album please

  • Comment number 20.

I am also hoping Roxy John will pitch in on this theme. One of the 2 801 gigs I suspect!

    The Clash - Groovy Times

from the best ever e.p and with packaging to match!

  • Comment number 29.

I thought I would top up my suggestions for

    Monday - sibling singers:-
This old heart of mine - Isley Brothers
Goodbye to love - the Carpenters
Strawberry Letter #23 - Brothers Johnston
Bring me all your lovin' - Allison Moorer and Shelby Lynne (from live "Show" CD)
    I want you back - Jackson 5
    Harsh - Baskery
    Wanted - The Dooleys
Labour of love - Hue and Cry
Use somebody - Kings of Leon

    Happy to endorse Cowboy Junkies.

    Wednesday - 'memory and recollection'
    I remember you - Earle/Harris
Easier to forget - Allison Moorer
The song remembers when - Trisha Yearwood
Hotel California - Eagles (lyric: some dance to remember, some dance to forget)
Crocodile rock - Elton John (I remember when rock was young)
It was a very good year or Life's been good to me - Sinatra
The way it never was - Kim Richey
What a fool believes - Doobie Brothers
Let's make a night to remember - Bryan Adams
    Glory days - Springsteen

#19 & 21 - Cheers Norrie/Adam - I think I had previously confessed to a love of french music, whereas my sons hate it with equal passion. La mer might at a stretch be played. My all time favourite (Lucienne Delyle- Mon amant de saint Jean) is probably a non-starter.

    Have a good weekend

Changed my mind. This week is a golden opperchancity for anything from Live In Gdansk. Really wish I had been there.

Fat Old Sun or Wots Uh The Deal, or even Comfortably Numb

DC (It won't be played, but worth the try...)

  • Comment number 31.

    Monday

Do Angus and Malcolm Young count? They`re not exactly `singing siblings`.

    But if they do then,

    Rock N Roll Train - AC/DC

Playing Sao Paulo next month but not Rio! Can you believe it!

  • Comment number 32.

    Mon. PLASTIC MAN - Kinks

Tues. ??? Not sure. My kids are not kids anymore. I'll ask them and get back to you.

Wed. Another excuse to request ALL I REMEMBER - Christy Moore or Mick Hanly

Thurs. Anything from the album ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD - Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded at the Fox Theatre, Atlanta, Georgia in July 1976

  • Comment number 33.

Tues. Nope, no musical complaints. They claim to get embarrassed when their mother and I dance in public but I put it down to jealousy. ;o)

  • Comment number 34.

#33 I'm like you Cannyman, my kids pinch my music & I learn from them. In fact, late nights tend to be musical comparison time and it all goes down fine!

  • Comment number 35.

What a shame to hear about Stephen Gately, maybe the theme could be stretched slightly on Monday for a Boyzone track.

  • Comment number 36.

Just heard about it...... never a fan in any way but what a tragedy .... far too young...

  • Comment number 37.

    Monday - Siblings In Pop:
The Patriot Game - The Bluebells
Jive Talkin' - Bee Gees (the BEST pop record ever made!)
Colour Of My Car - The Liberties
    Nature's Law - Embrace
April Skies - The Jesus & Mary Chain
    I'll Be There - Jackson 5
This Time Tomorrow - The Kinks
Lost In Music - Sister Sledge
Desperado or Goodbye To Love - The Carpenters (not the usual schtick)
    MMMBop - Hanson
Morning Side Of The Mountain - Donny Osmond/Marie Osmond
Cheeky Flamenco - The Cheeky Girls (WOT!?)

  • Comment number 38.

Quite a claim re Bee Gees Jim. I am a huge fan and that track would not get in my top ten Bee gees tracks. Got them back in vogue though - was that the first ever viral campaign! Discuss!

  • Comment number 39.

The Hee Bee Gee Bees - Meaningless Songs In Very High Voices

  • Comment number 40.

    #38

I'm talking about the 'making' of a pop record - that particular track has everything you could wish to be absolutely perfect in it from the production through to the instrument voicing, song structure and even the video (championed by none other than George Martin). Yes there are other Bee Gees songs that are better, but none that have the complete recording and production package.

  • Comment number 41.

    Monday
Got to be Goodbye To Love by The Carpenters

    Tuesday

    I'll pass on this one

    Wednesday
Surprised nobody's picked up on Reconnez Cherie by Wreckless Eric

    Thursday
1990, Sheffield City Hall, Big Country
Had my ticket - which were hard to come by - but gave it away to a friends' sister who couldn't get one. She had never seen them live and really wanted to go. Like a fool I let her - absolutely gutted when they all came back raving about how great the gig was.
One Great Thing would be apppropriate - it was one great thing I missed but was one great thing letting someone experience the band

  • Comment number 42.

    #40

There's a theme in here - Best Pop Record Ever - it would eliminate most of the usual dross.

  • Comment number 43.

  • Comment number 46.

For Monday how about the Brecker Brothers, Michael and Randy, who have played on an incredible array of albums from James Brown, Dire straits, George Benson to Bonnie Tyler and Frsank Zappa and all stops in between . The obvious one for me would be:

Springsteen - Meeting Across The River

but how about a classic bit of the commercial side of Lou Reed:

Lou Reed featuring the Becker Bros - High In The City from the great New Sensations lp. (Lou was on an incredible run of form around this time).

  • Comment number 47.

As an aside if any one could tell me the show that Lou performed several tracks from that album on UK tv possible OGWT if it was still going that would be appreciated. Band had Robert Quine, Fernando Saunders and I think Fred Maher.

  • Comment number 48.

    For Monday...

Crowded House ----------- Distant Sun or Better Be Home Soon ( Tim & Neil Finn )

    Tuesday...

Going to pass ... Daughter's 16 this year so music is very important for her at the moment, copying stuff from my ichoons to hers and asking a lot about music and bands ... best question yet "Dad do you know anything about a band i heard at a friends house called The Ramones"? ... they are great!! honestly it took 3 days to get the smile off my face... :o) shes very open minded about music so i have no problems here

    Wednesday...

Aaron Neville ------------– Please Remember Me

  • Comment number 49.

#40 - Great shout Bob. Best Carpenters song to my mind.

#41 - Great theme Glen. But how do you define `Pop`?

  • Comment number 50.

    Sorry, meant 41 and 42.

  • Comment number 51.

    #49

It wouldn't work. People would still misguidedly pick records that are really only fit for extracting confessions at Guantanamo Bay.

  • Comment number 52.

    Monday: Siblings

Karine Polwart: Follow The Heron (Karines brother Steve is lead guitarist in the band)

Dire Straits: Six Blade Knife (David Knopfler was the co-founder of the band along with Mark)

The Proclaimers: A Long Long Long Time Ago (How about something we don't hear very often... and this is one of their finest moments)

  • Comment number 53.

    Monday.

I wonder if anyone will request something by The Carpenters? My favourite drummer is Karen Carpenter but I'm not brave enough to request them on GIO. A shocking lack of bottle.

Instead I'm going to plump for Punka by Kenickie. One of several excellent (and cruelly ignored)singles by the band. Lauren Laverne's brother Pete played the drums in the band and went by the name of Johnny X.

Surely one of the best groups never to go big time?

    Sunderland's finest.

    Magic Man - Heart

This came out in the mid seventies and I've seldom heard it since, tho as I remember it was a melodic, rocky number.
The band is from Vancouver, Canada and includes sisters Ann & Nancy Wilson.

When You Look Me In The Eyes - The Jonas Brothers
Sex On Fire - The Kings of Leon

    Wednesday Memories

    Particularly strong recommendation for
    * Billy Bragg -
about trying to remember the start of a long-term love affair, when it was all new and you didn't know it was going to turn into something significant enough to want to remember all the little things.

    * The Kinks - Come Dancing
    * ABBA - The Day Before You Came
    * Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond
    * Kid Rock - All Summer Long
    * Marillion - Kayleigh

and almost the entire works of The Sawdoctors, but in particular:

    * Galway and Mayo
    * Red Cortina
    * You Broke My Heart
    * Tommy K

(Lots of good and pertinent Runrig tracks too, but nae danger of them being played, eh?)

    Tuesday:

    * George Harrison - When We Was Fab (hmm - works for Wed too)

Bob Dylan's Christmas Album - grounds for giving Phil Spector parole.

  • Comment number 85.

    WEDNESDAY

'Reflections' - Diana Ross & The Supremes

I don't know how many times I've listened to this song in the 42 years since its release, but I never tire of hearing it. Hits the spot every single time.

  • Comment number 86.

    Wed - great theme!

Lucinda Williams - 2 Cool to be Forgotten

but really best of all Boo Hewerdines outstanding track I Remember which he couples with a wee bit of Nick Caves The Ship Song. All about his childhood recollections it is his best work.

  • Comment number 87.

I had also being going to suggest a Van Morrison track Memories from his brilliant Enlightenment album, but he was played on Tuesday.

  • Comment number 88.

I enjoyed Tuesday's show. A very good balance, I thought.

    Wednesday - Memories

"I remember April when the sun was in the sky"

    Daydreamer - David Cassidy

  • Comment number 90.

    Best place for it.

    Wednesday.

I don't know if anyone will remember a track by Linton Kwesi Johnson called (I think) Lorraine. On this track Linton is reminiscing about his old girlfriend and how they would go walking in the rain.

Not sure if it was ever released as a single but remember liking it a lot. Maybe on his second album?

    Cheers.

Yup - excellent track LLIM. It's called Loraine from the Straight To Inglan's Head album (in case the producers are trying to find it).

Aww man!! i was just gaunny say that JFE.
Favourite so far this week would've been really good for tonight, Island of Dreams - "Again I would wonder where memories enfold me..." and no coincidence, memories enfolded me when i heard that song again.
    Another one for tonight
    The Unforgettable Fire - U2
    and there's
Remembering partI - Thin Lizzy though seein as it's an album track from their eponymous 1st album there's probably more chance of a Jethro Tull track getting on

THURSDAY. Apart of course from The Bay City Rollers at Penicuik Town Hall...

The Beatles at Edinburgh ABC Cinema in 1964 ('I Feel Fine')...although, considering my experience at the Jonas Brothers concert, perhaps the screaming would be too much to bear.

Slade, supported by Thin Lizzy and Suzy Quatro in 1972 ('Mama Weer All Crazee Now' by Slade).
